Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension. Jesus has taken His seat in glory, opening the gates of heaven for all of us and sending us out to be His hands and feet on earth.

When Jesus ascended into heaven, He didnโ€™t abandon us. Instead, He stepped out of the limits of time and space so that, through the Holy Spirit, He could be present to everyone, everywhere, always.

Now, letโ€™s look up in reverence, knowing our Savior pleads for us at the right hand of the Father, and look outward in purpose, ready to bring His love to the world.

MAY 14 | ๐’๐š๐ข๐ง๐ญ ๐Œ๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ก๐ข๐š๐ฌ

Very little is known about Saint Matthias, whom we honor today. He was most likely living in Galilee at the time that Jesus began His public ministry because he fits the description as โ€œโ€ฆone of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day on which he was taken up from usโ€ฆโ€ (Acts 1:21โ€“22). He certainly was among Jesusโ€™ first followers.

After Judas betrayed our Lord, the Gospel of Matthew says that Judas โ€œwent off and hanged himselfโ€ (Matthew 27:5). In the Acts of the Apostles, the Apostle Peter describes Judasโ€™ death this way: โ€œโ€ฆfalling headlong, he burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled outโ€ (Acts 1:18). Regardless of how Judas died, he was one of the Twelve. Twelve is an important number in the Bible because there were twelve sons of Jacob (later given the name Israel) and those twelve sons established the twelve tribes that made up the people of Israel. Therefore, when Judas died, Peter recommended that someone be appointed to replace him so that the Apostles would once again number twelve. Peter quoted Psalm 109 that prophesied, โ€œMay another take his officeโ€ (Acts 1:20).

In order to pick a suitable successor, the approximately 120 disciples who were gathered together at that time in Jerusalem, perhaps in the upper room where the Last Supper had been celebrated, elected two who had been with Jesus from the beginning. Most likely these men were among the seventy-two disciples that Jesus had sent out on a mission of evangelization during His public ministry. The Acts of the Apostles describes it this way: โ€œSo they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias. Then they prayed, โ€˜You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.โ€™ Then they gave lots to them, and the lot fell upon Matthias, and he was counted with the eleven apostlesโ€ (Acts 1:23โ€“26).

Even though there were about 120 disciples gathered together, the Twelve were singled out as Apostles. This election of Matthias took place prior to Pentecost, so when the Holy Spirit came, it came upon Matthias as an Apostle, and the Twelve as a united body, along with the rest of the disciples.

One significant theological point to consider is that because it was Peter who organized the elevation of a disciple to the responsibility of Apostle, it is clear that the Apostles did not not believe that Jesus intended the role of Apostle to end with the deaths of the Twelve. Jesus intended their ministry to continue and even to expand beyond twelve as the Church expanded beyond Jerusalem. The appointment of Matthias as an Apostle clearly teaches us that the pope, the successor of Saint Peter, has the authority and responsibility to appoint new Apostlesโ€”bishopsโ€”as needed.

After this mention of Matthias in the Acts of the Apostles, nothing more is said about him. We know nothing for certain about his life and ministry after his becoming one of the first bishops of the Church. According to various traditions, Matthias traveled north to Cappadocia, modern-day central Turkey, and then east to the Caspian Sea, modern-day Georgia. He is believed to have died a martyr by crucifixion or may have even been stoned and then beheaded. Other traditions state that he traveled south to modern-day Sudan and Ethiopia.

The Church Father from a century later, Saint Clement of Alexandria, quotes Saint Matthias as follows: โ€œIt behooves us to combat the flesh, and make use of it, without pampering it by unlawful gratifications. As to the soul, we must develop her power by faith and knowledge.โ€ This quote reveals the deep spiritual knowledge Saint Matthias had regarding the importance of the mortification of the flesh and the spiritual necessity of faith. There is little doubt that the three years he spent as a disciple of Jesus prepared him for his ministry as a bishop. And there is little doubt that his ministry as a bishop brought about the conversion and sanctification of many.

On May 1 at 4:00 PM, we gathered for a procession that is not just about a walk, but rather bringing Jesus, present in the Eucharist, into the streets of the world He loves so much. As we walk, weโ€™re reminded that we are pilgrims on a journey to heaven, but also missionaries right here on earth, called to share His hope with those who need it most.

It is our "Thank You" for the end of our long fast from the Bread of Life. Let this mark a fresh start for all of us, renewing our devotion and our shared call to live holier, more purposeful lives.

This April 30, our church belfry was solemnly blessed, with each bell anointed and dedicated to Godโ€™s glory. With Rev. Fr. Reynaldo Sotelo Jr., OCDโ€™s blessing, these bells were washed with holy water and anointed with sacred oils, setting them apart for Godโ€™s service.

When you hear the toll of the Great Bell, let that sound be a call to the presence of God. Let it stir your heart to remember Jesus, protecting your peace and keeping your faith alive at any time of the day.

What a beautiful night it was! Last April 30, our parish was filled with music as our community came together for our Choral Concert. It was so heartening to see everyone gathered at 6:30 PM to hear the talent we have right here in our parish.

The night featured a little bit of everything! The Couples For Christ Choir started us off with the sweet message of โ€Fill the World with Love,โ€ and "With What Great Love" followed by the St. Joseph Community Choir giving us hope with โ€œI Can" and "Ponts of View.โ€ We also got a lovely taste of tradition from the Magagmay nga Kristiyanong Katilingban Choir, who performed classics like "Lumalabay Nga Daw A*o" and โ€œDalawidaw.โ€ Things got romantic when the St. Joseph Singing Ambassadors took the stage with โ€œCanโ€™t Help Falling in Loveโ€ and "When I Fall in Love" and the Charismatic Prayer Group Choir really moved us with โ€œPower of Your Love" You Made Me Live Again.โ€

The energy stayed high with the Bellisima Voce de San Giusseppe Choir singing favorites like โ€œHuling El Bimbo,โ€ and "The Climb" and a prayerful performance by the Tunog Sang Pamatan-on Choir of "Let Me Be The Bearer of Your Love." Of course, everyoneโ€™s hearts melted when the St. Joseph Childrenโ€™s Choir closed things out with โ€œGreatest Love of Allโ€ and โ€œSeasons of Love.โ€ Thank you to all the singers and everyone who came out to support them.

We are overjoyed to celebrate the holy matrimony of Rey Delos Reyes and Ma. Criselda Pajadan. As you walk hand-in-hand and commit to one another in the presence of God, may your lives be a testimony of His kindness.

This past April 26th, we stepped away from the noise and gathered right here at the church for a much-needed Relaxation Day. The halls were turned into a sanctuary of self-care, where our community could enjoy haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages, and spa treatments.

โ€‹Just as God "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had done," human life has an ebb and flow of both work and rest. These pamperings were a reminder that we don't always have to be "on" to be in His presence; sometimes, the most spiritual thing we can do is just be still, recharge our bodies, and enjoy the gift of each otherโ€™s company.

This event would not have been possible without the support of the Iloilo City Mayorโ€™s Office for facilitating a group of hairstylists, nail specialists, and masseurs who rendered free services. Thank you very much!
