Today is the Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope, Religious, Doctor of the Church

Born around 540, Gregory the Great died in Rome in 604. Before his papacy, he served as prefect of Rome, where he founded monasteries both in the city and in Sicily, eventually embracing the monastic life himself. Called to be a deacon of Rome by Pope Benedict I, Gregory was later sent as papal legate to Constantinople, gaining valuable experience in diplomacy and Church governance.

Elected pope in 590 during a time of crisis, Gregory reorganized Church life and administration, sponsored liturgical reform, and initiated the evangelization of the English, sending missionaries such as Saint Augustine of Canterbury. He is remembered for his extensive writings on pastoral care, spirituality, and morals, which continue to guide the Church today.

Gregoryโ€™s humility is captured in his self-designation as โ€œservant of the servants of God,โ€ a title that remains a hallmark of papal ministry. His vision of leadership combined wisdom, compassion, and fidelity to Christ, making him one of the most influential figures in Christian history.

COLLECT
O God, you guide your people with kindness,
you govern them with love.
Through the intercession of Pope Gregory the Great,
grant to those who lead your flock the spirit of wisdom,
so that the growth of your Church in holiness
may bring eternal joy to its shepherds.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.

LITURGICAT
MEMORIAL OF THE PASSION OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST

HE LOST HIS HEAD, BUT NEVER HIS COURAGE TO SPEAK THE TRUTH.

โ€œIt is not lawful for you to have your brotherโ€™s wife.โ€
โ€” Mark 6:18

John the Baptist knew that speaking the truth could cost him everything.

He confronted Herod not with hatred, but with the truth. He could have remained silent. He could have compromised. He could have protected himself. Instead, John remained faithful to Godโ€”even when faithfulness led him to prison and eventually to death.

The voice that once cried in the wilderness, โ€œPrepare the way of the Lord,โ€ would not be silenced by fear.

His martyrdom reminds us that truth is not something we change simply because it becomes uncomfortable. Christian courage means remaining faithful to Christ even when doing so has a price.

John prepared the way for Jesus with his preaching. In his death, he prepared it with his blood.

THE WORLD MAY ASK US TO BE SILENT.
THE GOSPEL ASKS US TO BE FAITHFUL.

Saint John the Baptist, courageous witness of truth, pray for us.

LITURGICAT
MEMORIAL OF SAINT AUGUSTINE, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH

HE SEARCHED EVERYWHERE FOR HAPPINESS, UNTIL HE DISCOVERED THAT HIS HEART HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR GOD.

โ€œYou have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.โ€
โ€” Saint Augustine, Confessions

Today, the Church celebrates Saint Augustine of Hippo, one of the greatest converts, theologians, bishops, and Doctors of the Church.

But Augustine was not always a saint.

As a young man, he searched for happiness in ambition, relationships, intellectual pursuits, and worldly pleasures. He questioned the Christian faith and wandered far from the life his mother, Saint Monica, had taught him. Yet behind his restless searching was a mother who refused to stop praying.

Grace eventually found the restless Augustine.

Through the prayers of Saint Monica, the preaching of Saint Ambrose, his encounter with Sacred Scripture, and the patient action of God in his heart, Augustine surrendered his life to Christ. The man who had spent years running from God became a bishop who spent the rest of his life leading others toward Him.

Saint Augustine is especially honored as a patron of theologians and is also traditionally associated with printers and brewers. Yet perhaps his greatest witness is to every person who feels far from God, every sinner longing to begin again, and every restless heart still searching for meaning.

His story reminds us that our past does not have to become our final destination. God can enter our confusion, our failures, our questions, and even our sins and begin something new.

NO ONE IS TOO FAR FROM GOD.

FROM RESTLESSNESS TO REST.
FROM WANDERING TO CONVERSION.
FROM SIN TO GRACE.
FROM SEARCHING TO FINDING CHRIST.

Saint Augustine of Hippo, Bishop and Doctor of the Church, pray for us.

LITURGICAT
MEMORIAL OF SAINT MONICA

SHE NEVER STOPPED PRAYING FOR THE SON SHE ALMOST LOST.

โ€œNothing is far from God.โ€
โ€” Saint Monica

Today, the Church honors Saint Monica, the patron saint of mothers, wives, widows, and those praying for the conversion of loved ones.

For years, Monica carried a heartbreak that many parents know too well. Her son, Augustine, had abandoned the faith, pursued worldly ambitions, and wandered far from God. She could not force him to believe. She could not change his heart. But she refused to surrender him to despair.

She prayed.

Day after day. Year after year. Through tears, disappointments, and silence, Monica remained faithful. Her greatest weapon was not argument, but persistent prayer. Her greatest strength was not control, but hope.

God answered those tears.

The rebellious son became Saint Augustine, one of the greatest saints and Doctors of the Church. Behind his conversion stood the quiet holiness of a mother who believed that no soul is ever beyond the reach of God's mercy.

Saint Monica reminds us that prayer is never wasted. Every Rosary whispered for a child, every tear offered for a struggling spouse, every hope entrusted to God becomes a seed that He can bring to life in His perfect time.

WHEN LOVE FEELS HELPLESS, PRAY.
WHEN HOPE GROWS WEAK, PRAY.
WHEN SOMEONE YOU LOVE IS FAR FROM GOD, NEVER STOP PRAYING.

Saint Monica, faithful mother and woman of hope, pray for us.

โ€œPasseremo il mare.โ€ โ€œWe will cross the sea.โ€

On August 26, 1915, five Oblates of St. Josephโ€”Fr. Giuseppe Anfossi, Fr. Ernesto Fornaca, Fr. Eugenio Gherlone, Bro. Giuseppe Maccagno, and Bro. Giovanni Battista Cameraโ€”arrived in San Jose, Batangas. Amid the joyful ringing of church bells, the first OSJ mission in the Philippines was born.
Their arrival was more than a historic event. It was the fulfillment of a prophetic faith. Years earlier, Bro. Giuseppe Maccagno had said, โ€œPasseremo il mareโ€ (One day, we will cross the sea.โ€) They left the familiar, crossed vast oceans, and trusted that God was leading them to the mission where they will perfect their charity.
Today, as the Oblates of St. Joseph Philippine Province celebrate 111 years, we are the living fruit of that courageous โ€œyes.โ€ We carry the same mission, charism, and trust in Divine Providence.

The sea they crossed now challenges us to cross our own seas, our fears, limitations, comforts, and uncertainties. Their courage reminds us that the mission must not only be remembered but it must also be continued.
Their journey began with five. Today, the mission continues through us.
โ€œPasseremo il mare!โ€ We will cross the seaโ€”not because the way is easy, but because Christ goes before us. With the faithful and humble heart of St. Joseph, wherever God sends us, we will go; wherever souls need us, we will serve; and wherever the mission calls, we will answer with courage, fidelity, and love.
The pioneers crossed the sea for us. Now, strengthened by their example, let us cross whatever sea lies before us and carry the OSJ mission farther than we ever imagined.

LITURGICAT
FEAST OF SAINT BARTHOLOMEW, APOSTLE
PATRON SAINT OF TANNERS, LEATHERWORKERS, AND BOOKBINDERS

โ€œRabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.โ€
โ€” John 1:49

Today, the Church celebrates Saint Bartholomew, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. He is traditionally identified with Nathanael in the Gospel of John, the disciple whom Jesus described as โ€œa true Israeliteโ€ in whom there was no deceit.

When Philip told him that they had found Jesus of Nazareth, Nathanael was initially doubtful. Yet everything changed when he personally encountered Christ. His questions gave way to faith, and he proclaimed: โ€œRabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.โ€

Tradition tells us that Saint Bartholomew later carried the Gospel to distant lands and eventually gave his life for Christ. Because tradition associates his martyrdom with being flayed, he became the patron saint of tanners, leatherworkers, and others who work with leather, including bookbinders.

His life reminds us that faith is more than simply hearing about Jesus from others. Like Bartholomew, each of us is invited to encounter Christ personally, know Him deeply, and have the courage to proclaim Him faithfully.

FROM DOUBT TO FAITH.
FROM ENCOUNTER TO DISCIPLESHIP.
FROM DISCIPLESHIP TO MISSION.

Saint Bartholomew, Apostle and Martyr, pray for us.

AVE REGINA CAELORUM! Today is the Memorial of the Queenship of the Virgin Mary.

The feast of the Queenship of Mary was established by Pope Pius XII in 1955, originally celebrated on 31 May. In 1969, it was moved to 22 August to highlight its close relationship with the Assumption of Mary (15 August). Taken up into heavenly glory, Mary is exalted as Queen of Heaven and Earth, sharing fully in the victory of her Son, the Lord of lords and conqueror of sin and death.

This feast proclaims that Maryโ€™s queenship flows from her unique role as Mother of Jesus Christ, the King of Kings. Crowned with glory, she intercedes for the faithful, guiding them with maternal care. Her queenship is not one of worldly power, but of humility, service, and love, reflecting the reign of her Son.

Maryโ€™s exaltation assures us that the destiny of Godโ€™s faithful children is to share in the glory of Christ. She is the sign of sure hope and comfort, reminding us that heaven is our true homeland, and that through her prayers we are strengthened to persevere in faith.

COLLECT
O God, you have given us the Mother of your Son
to be our Mother and Queen;
grant that, aided by her prayers,
we may share in heaven the glory of your children.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God, for ever and ever. Amen.
