COFFEECAT OF THE DAY:
God Is More Interested in Who You Are Than How You Look.

“You appear righteous, but inside you are filled with hypocrisy.”
— Matthew 23:28

We spend a lot of time taking care of what people can see. We choose what to wear, fix our appearance, protect our reputation, post the best moments of our lives, and sometimes work hard to make others believe that everything is fine. There is nothing wrong with presenting ourselves well, but Jesus reminds us today that a beautiful outside can never substitute for a truthful heart.

The strong words of Jesus against the scribes and Pharisees are also an invitation to examine ourselves. We can appear prayerful while carrying resentment, speak about kindness while treating people badly, go to church while refusing to forgive, or talk about God while quietly living in ways that contradict what we profess. Faith is not about looking holy. It is about allowing God to transform what other people cannot see.

Today, instead of asking, “What do people think of me?” ask, “Lord, what do You see in me?” Bring Him the anger, pride, jealousy, wounds, hidden sins, and struggles that need healing. God does not ask us to pretend that we are perfect. He asks us to be honest enough to let Him change us from within.

A good image may impress people, but only a sincere heart pleases God. Let your faith be more than appearance. Let it become the truth of the person you are becoming.

Beautiful outside... but what does God see inside?

Reflections on the Gospel
Matthew 23:27–32

“You are like whitewashed tombs, which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and every kind of filth.”

Jesus gives us one of the strongest images in the Gospel: a whitewashed tomb. From the outside, it looks clean, beautiful, and respectable. But behind the beautiful exterior is death. Jesus uses this image because He is confronting a dangerous kind of religion, one that becomes more concerned with appearing holy than actually allowing God to transform the heart.

It is easy to build a beautiful exterior. We can appear prayerful, speak about God, attend Mass, serve in ministries, carry religious images, quote Scripture, and make sure people see us doing good things. All of these can be beautiful expressions of faith. But Jesus asks a much deeper question: What is happening inside? What happens when nobody is watching? What kind of person are we behind the image we present to others?

The frightening thing about hypocrisy is that eventually we can become so accustomed to the mask that we forget we are wearing one. We condemn the sins of others while excusing our own. We speak about forgiveness while carrying resentment. We preach kindness while treating people harshly. We defend truth while spreading gossip. We appear humble while secretly craving recognition. We can even become busy doing things for God while slowly losing our relationship with God.

Jesus is not asking us to become perfect overnight. He is asking us to become honest. Christianity is not about pretending that there is no darkness within us. It is about having enough humility to open that darkness to Christ and allow Him to heal it. The Lord is not impressed by the white paint covering the tomb. He wants to enter what is hidden inside and bring it back to life.

Perhaps today we need to stop asking, “What do people think of me?” and begin asking, “Lord, what do You see in me?” If there is pride, heal it. If there is resentment, remove it. If there is hypocrisy, expose it. If there is sin, forgive it. If there is something dead within us, Lord, bring it back to life.

Because holiness is not looking beautiful on the outside.

Holiness is becoming true on the inside.

And God would rather have an honest sinner asking for mercy than a beautiful tomb pretending there is nothing inside that needs resurrection.

YOUCAT OF THE DAY
YOUNG FAITH. REAL QUESTIONS. CATHOLIC ANSWERS.

DOES GOD REALLY CARE ABOUT ME?

There are moments when we know that God exists, but still wonder whether He really notices us. Does He see what I am going through? Does He hear the prayers I keep repeating? Does He care when I feel alone, confused, or afraid?

YOUCAT reminds us of something beautiful: God created us out of free and unselfish love. We are not accidents. We are not simply one among billions of people whom God barely notices. We exist because God willed us, loves us, and desires us to live in communion with Him.

YOUCAT 2 | cf. CCC 1, 27, 356

This means that before you accomplished anything, God already loved you. Before people appreciated you, God already knew your worth. Even when you fail, struggle, or feel that you are not enough, your value before God does not disappear.

Jesus gives us a beautiful image of how personally God knows us: “Even the hairs of your head have all been counted. Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows” (Luke 12:7).

Imagine that. The God who created the universe is not too busy for you.

God knows your name. He sees the struggles you do not talk about. He knows the prayers you cannot put into words. He sees your efforts, your wounds, your hopes, and even the parts of your life that you are still trying to understand.

So when you begin to wonder whether you matter, remember:

GOD KNOWS YOU.
GOD SEES YOU.
GOD DESIRES YOU.
GOD LOVES YOU.

Your worth is not measured by likes, achievements, popularity, possessions, or other people's approval. Your deepest worth comes from the One who created you and calls you His own.

Today, ask yourself: Do I really believe that God loves me personally? Can I trust His love even when I cannot understand what is happening in my life?

Perhaps your prayer today can simply be:

“Lord, help me to see myself through Your eyes and to live knowing that I am loved by You.”

YOU ARE WANTED BY GOD.
YOU ARE KNOWN BY GOD.
YOU ARE LOVED BY GOD.

And that changes everything.

You can look clean outside... and still be broken inside.

Reflections on the Gospel
Matthew 23:23–26

“Cleanse first the inside of the cup, so that the outside also may be clean.”

Jesus speaks strongly to the scribes and Pharisees because they had become very careful about appearing righteous while neglecting what mattered most: “judgment and mercy and fidelity.” They knew the rules, observed religious practices, and made sure that others could see their devotion. Yet Jesus looked beyond what people could see and went directly to the heart.

This Gospel can make us uncomfortable because it is possible to look religious without allowing God to transform us. We can attend Mass, pray the Rosary, serve in ministries, quote Scripture, post about our faith, and know many teachings of the Church, yet still carry pride, resentment, dishonesty, jealousy, selfishness, or an unwillingness to forgive. None of these religious practices are wrong. They are beautiful and necessary when they lead us toward God. But Jesus warns us never to use outward devotion to hide an interior life that we refuse to surrender to Him.

“Cleanse first the inside of the cup.” Jesus is asking us to stop worrying only about what people see and begin paying attention to what God sees. He sees the anger hidden behind our smile, the envy behind our congratulations, the pride behind our service, the judgment behind our religious words, and the wounds we keep pretending are not there. Yet He does not expose these things simply to condemn us. He reveals them because He wants to heal and purify us from within.

Perhaps the most dangerous hypocrisy is not pretending before others. It is becoming so accustomed to our outward appearance that we stop recognizing what is happening inside ourselves. We can become experts at correcting other people while remaining blind to our own hearts.

Today Jesus invites us to an honest examination: What is inside my cup? Is there mercy? Is there fidelity? Is there compassion? Is there humility? Is the person people see on the outside becoming the same person God sees on the inside?

God is not looking for perfect appearances. He is looking for a heart willing to be changed.

Because holiness is not about looking clean.

It is about allowing Jesus to cleanse us from within.

Catechetical Word for the Day

METANOIA

Pronounced: meh-tah-NOY-ah

From the Greek metánoia, meaning “change of mind,” “conversion,” or “change of heart.” It refers to a deep turning of our whole life toward God.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Metanoia means more than simply being sorry for our sins. It is a real change of heart, mind, and direction because we have encountered Jesus Christ.

Conversion begins here.

When Jesus enters our lives, He does not simply ask us to know more about Him. He invites us to become new persons, to leave behind sin, and to follow Him.

Jesus tells us:

“Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
Mark 1:15

METANOIA means being able to say:

“I have encountered Jesus.
I cannot remain the same.
I want my life to belong to Him.”

True conversion is not only turning away from something. It is turning toward Someone: JESUS CHRIST.

And this conversion does not happen only once. Every day, Christ calls us to return, to begin again, and to allow His grace to transform the way we think, choose, love, and live.

This is METANOIA: a heart changed by Christ and a life continually turning toward Him.

One word. One truth. One step deeper in faith.
