ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI): MAKAGUBA BA SA KATILINGBAN?
Pope Leo XIV, in his first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, is not condemning Artificial Intelligence (AI) itself. Rather, he reminds society to use technology responsibly, ethically, and morally. The Pope fears that humanity may someday trust machines more than conscience, truth, compassion, and wisdom.
AI refers to computer systems capable of writing, analyzing information, recognizing faces, predicting behavior, and influencing opinions through social media. While these technologies can improve communication, education, and productivity, they can also become dangerous when abused by powerful individuals, corporations, or governments.
Sa atong kahimtang karon sa Pilipinas, klaro kaayo nga tinuod kining maong pasidaan. Social media already shapes public opinion.
In this situation, the teachings of the Catholic Church become very important. Through Catholic traditions and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the faithful are guided to uphold truth, moral conscience, human dignity, and the common good. These teachings help lay people discern what is right or wrong in the digital age and remind them to avoid spreading falsehood and to act with integrity in public life.
The role of the lay people is crucial. They are called to defend truth, promote responsible use of social media, and practice ethical leadership.
The encyclical reminds everyone that technology is only a tool. Human dignity, conscience, and faith must always remain greater than machines.
