ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI): MAKAGUBA BA SA KATILINGBAN?

Pope Leo XIV, in his first encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, is not condemning Artificial Intelligence (AI) itself. Rather, he reminds society to use technology responsibly, ethically, and morally. The Pope fears that humanity may someday trust machines more than conscience, truth, compassion, and wisdom.

AI refers to computer systems capable of writing, analyzing information, recognizing faces, predicting behavior, and influencing opinions through social media. While these technologies can improve communication, education, and productivity, they can also become dangerous when abused by powerful individuals, corporations, or governments.

Sa atong kahimtang karon sa Pilipinas, klaro kaayo nga tinuod kining maong pasidaan. Social media already shapes public opinion.

In this situation, the teachings of the Catholic Church become very important. Through Catholic traditions and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, the faithful are guided to uphold truth, moral conscience, human dignity, and the common good. These teachings help lay people discern what is right or wrong in the digital age and remind them to avoid spreading falsehood and to act with integrity in public life.

The role of the lay people is crucial. They are called to defend truth, promote responsible use of social media, and practice ethical leadership.

The encyclical reminds everyone that technology is only a tool. Human dignity, conscience, and faith must always remain greater than machines.

REV. GERARD PREACHES THE POWER OF PENTECOST IN TODAY’S FRACTURED SOCIETY

Rev. Gerard Vincent D. Alania reflected on the meaning of Pentecost Sunday, celebrated today, May 24, 2026, as the culmination of the Easter Season and the birthday of the Church.

In his homily, he connected Pentecost to the Jewish feast of Shavuot, observed fifty days after Passover, commemorating the Israelites’ liberation from slavery and the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. In the same way, Pentecost signifies God’s liberation gift to the Church through the sending of the Holy Spirit.

Rev. Alania emphasized how the apostles, once confined by fear and uncertainty, were transformed by the Holy Spirit into courageous witnesses of Christ. Jesus’ greeting, “Peace be with you,” was presented as a message of healing, restoration, and liberation from fear, hopelessness, and spiritual bo***ge.
He lamented that many people today remain trapped by consumerism, social media, false narratives, and attachment to comfort zones. Amid the divisions and confusion of modern society.

“Napriso kita sa kawalay paglaum..sa kawalay pagtoo..due to the idea of consumerism..and that is the sad reality of today..Dili ta gusto mogawas sa atong comfort zone” said Rev. Alania.

Deacon Alania stressed that Pentecost reminds believers of three essential truths: the gift of freedom, the mission of proclaiming the Gospel, and the need to allow the Holy Spirit to empower and guide the faithful. Through the Spirit, the Church continues its mission of bringing hope, truth, and unity to the world.

BISHOP RAPADAS LEADS CALL AGAINST AGUS-PULANGI PRIVATIZATION; URGES PSALM TO RESPECT PUBLIC SENTIMENT

A public hearing on the future of the Agus-Pulangi Hydroelectric Complex (APHEC) was peacefully held on May 22, 2026, at St. Michael’s College, gathering church leaders, government officials, energy experts, and civil society groups opposing privatization.

The forum was opened by Councilor Atty. Marlene Young, chairperson of the City Council Committee on Energy, followed by an invocation led by Rev. Fr. Chito Claro.

Most Rev. Jose R. Rapadas III, D.D. stressed that APHEC is a vital public resource that must remain under government control.

Representatives of Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) defended their proposal for a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) for APHEC’s rehabilitation and operation.

However, energy advocate Dr. Melchie Ambalong strongly opposed the proposal, exposing what she described as PSALM’s “hidden agenda.” She argued that APHEC remains financially viable and capable of funding its own rehabilitation without privatization.

Retired NPC-Mingen executive Engr. Jeresa Irese A. Lagapa also questioned PSALM’s claims, affirming that the facilities remain operational and sustainable.

Current officials present in the forum from NPC-Mingen also maintained that the facilities remain functional, contradicting claims that APHEC is already in critical condition.

Representing the city mayor, Dr. Darwin Manubag likewise expressed firm opposition, warning that privatization could harm Mindanao consumers.

Meanwhile, Atty. Leo Zaragoza challenged what he described as misleading claims supporting privatization, insisting that public ownership best serves the Filipino people.

The forum, attended by clergy, media practitioners, academicians, stakeholders, and advocates, concluded with a synthesis and call for stronger public action presented by Carino V. Antequiza.
