Typhoon Opong Devastates Aklan, Global Methodist Church Extends Aid to Affected Communities
AKLAN, PHILIPPINES - The onslaught of Typhoon Opong brought catastrophic flooding across the province of Aklan, leaving communities reeling from its devastating impact. Among the hardest-hit areas are Ibajay and surrounding towns where homes,livelihoods, and places of worship, including churches were severely affected.
The destruction has been described by residents as miserable and heartbreaking. Entire houses were submerged, families lost personal belongings, and farmers sawtheir llivestock and crops swept away. Churches across Aklan, including those of the Global Methodist Church, were not spared from the force of the typhoon, with floodwaters inundating sanctuaries.
In the wake of this disaster, the Global Methodist Church Philippines, together with the broader The Global Methodist Church, has committed to extend relief and aid to its members and communities in Aklan. The church has announced that support will be mobilized not only locally but also frommembers abroad, particularly from the United States, who have expressed compassion and a strong desire to help those affected.
The relief efforts are now being organized by Dr. Luther Oconer, President of the Mega Manila Annual Conference, who has mobilized teams to provide immediate assistance for affected families. As the people of Aklan begin the difficult road to recovery, the outpouring of compassion from the Global Methodist Church locally and internationally shows that solidarity can bring hope and healing.
