Noah McKay, a philosophy doctoral student at Princeton University, has announced his conversion to the Catholic Church. He is the second Princeton philosophy scholar this year to enter the faith, following Joe Schmid’s return earlier in the summer.

McKay said he was never an atheist and had long been at least slightly confident in God’s existence. Yet for years he wrestled with questions such as the problem of evil, divine hiddenness, and difficulties with biblical interpretation. What ultimately convinced him of theism were design arguments based on the fine-tuning of physics, empirical evidence for contemporary Christian miracles, and arguments from consciousness, moral knowledge, and natural beauty.

Evidence for specifically Catholic “vindicatory miracles” then drew him toward the Church. These miracles, he argued, presuppose distinctive Catholic teachings and are supported by evidence at least as strong as more generic Christian miracles. Consistency required him either to accept or reject them all—and the evidence was too strong to reject.

McKay encouraged others discerning the faith to research these miracles, pray earnestly (especially the Rosary), and seek the truth. “Those who seek Christ, earnestly and prayerfully, will find him,” he said.

St. Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 in Assisi, Italy. He came from a wealthy family but chose to live a life of poverty, humility, and service to God. He founded the Franciscan Order and devoted himself to helping the poor and caring for creation. Francis was known for his deep love of nature and all living creatures. He received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, and died on October 3, 1226. He was canonized in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and is remembered as the patron saint of animals and the environment.
