St. Godric of Finchale. Ora pro nobis!
Saint Godric of Finchale (c. 1065–1170) was an English hermit, pilgrim, and holy man known for his deep life of prayer and simplicity.
Born in Norfolk, England, he began life as a merchant and sailor before experiencing a profound spiritual conversion. After making pilgrimages to Jerusalem, Rome, and Santiago de Compostela, he withdrew into solitude at Finchale near Durham, where he lived as a hermit for many decades.
Renowned for humility, asceticism, compassion, and mystical experiences, Godric became a spiritual guide to many visitors. He is also remembered for composing some of the earliest known English religious songs.
His feast day is celebrated on May 21.
