This is the original painting of the miraculous image of Nuestra Señora de Regla, carefully kept in a private room within the convent of the Nuestra Señora de Regla National Shrine. Many lovingly call her Birhen sa Regla, while others refer to her as Birhen sa Opon, recalling the former name of Lapu-Lapu City, where the shrine stands and where this sacred image is enthroned under the care of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart.

It is traditionally believed that this original image was painted by Saint Augustine of Hippo, the patron saint of Iba Cathedral. Because of this, devotion to Nuestra Señora de Regla is deeply rooted in the Augustinian spiritual tradition—a devotion shaped by a love that seeks God and rests in Him.

The image of Birhen sa Regla, translated as “Our Lady of the Holy Rule,” has long been associated with countless testimonies of grace: miracles of healing, answered prayers, and quiet conversions of the heart. Through her intercession, many have encountered the tenderness and power of God.

Theologically, Mary is called “full of grace” because “the Lord is with her.” This is precisely what the image reveals to us: Mary does not keep Jesus for herself: she presents Him to us. She leads us to Him, always. In her, we see a closeness to Christ that becomes a path for our own lives… a gentle reminder that where Mary is, Jesus is never far.
