: Replacement Prayer for 'Glory Be' during Holy Week

A tradition among Filipino Catholics is to use a different more somber prayer in the Holy Rosary instead of 'Glory Be', which is usually prayed after each decade of the Rosary. In some places, beginning on the 5th Sunday of Lent, others during Holy Week, and others from Maundy Thursday to Black Saturday, the following prayer is said:

V. Christ became obedient for us unto death.
R. Even to death on a cross.

*For Maundy Thursday
V. Christ became obedient for us.
R. Even to unto death.

*For Black Saturday
V. Christ became obedient for us unto death, even to the death of the cross.
R. For which cause, God also exalted him and has given him a name which is above all names.

Derived from Philippians 2:8, “he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross”, the alternative prayer focuses on the Passion and death of Jesus Christ, and orients the faithful to a deeper meditation on the suffering of Jesus. While not mandatory, the custom is reflective of Holy Week's somber and penitential character, and is also in accordance with similar (but required) practices, like omitting Alleluia and Gloria during Lent.
