Today marks the commemoration of the Virgin Mary's five appearances to Juan Diego, an indigenous convert. On December 9, 1531, Juan encountered the Mother of God on Tepeyac Hill, who requested a church at that site. Initially skeptical, the Bishop of Mexico City demanded a sign. Delayed by his ailing uncle, Juan received assurance from Mary that his uncle would heal and was instructed to gather out-of-season flowers as a sign.
Upon presenting these to the Bishop, Juan's cloak revealed an image of Mary, not painted by human hands, confirming her message and healing his uncle. This event transcends culture, emphasizing Mary's desire to be our mother, guiding and comforting us with her merciful love.
Let us pray.
My most merciful mother, I love you and invite you to pour forth upon me your love. I turn to you, this day, in my need, and I trust that you will bring me the abundant grace of your Son, Jesus. Mother Mary, O Virgin of Guadalupe, pray for us who turn to you in our need.
Saint Juan Diego, pray for us.
Our Lady of Guadalupe, pray for us.
