[OPINION] On Christian Music: Is it okay for a Catholic to listen to Christian Worship songs?
As we can see, Catholic music is very rich. From time to time, the Gregorian Chant remains the identity of the Christian Music for me.
One time, a batchmate from senior high asked me if the Catholic Church allowed its faithful to listen to Worship Songs such as Hillsong, Victory etc.
In my perspective, I highly encourage my fellow Catholics to dig and explore the beautiful traditions of the church such as the music of the fathers, take Gregorian chants for example
But there are a lot of music and possibilities that we can do today? We all have instruments to use. And many youths today want to engage and use their talents to Glorify God. Should we hinder them from serving God? No
Ephesians 5: 18-19 says, βbe filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart.β
If that is the way (modern song) that they can share their talent in the Glory of God, I cannot see any problem with that.
But what about other Christian Music? Worship songs?
Again I will say, I am not encouraging you, but BE DISCERNING with what you will listen, especially if that song comes from other denominations.
Look and dig into the lyrics and if there's something hidden that is in contrast with the Catholic Faith and teaching, if there is, well I am not recommending that song to you.
Stick to the core! Since I engaged myself with other denominations before I became an active Catholic, i know many good worship songs that will enrich your soul. There are also Catholic Charismatics who are expressing their talents through Catholic Worship Songs, such as El Shaddai, YFC, MFC Youth, The Lord's Flock, The Feast and many more
But don't forget our identity, open your hearts to the ancient chants of the church. I guarantee that you will be at home listening to it.
There are a lot of Catholic composers today who are using the Traditional sets to put in the masses today. My favorite Catholic Composers are Rev Fr Carlo Magno Marcelo, Sir Ferdz Bautista, Fr Maramba and many more.... Including those local composers and seminarians who engaged themselves to Christian music
