A BLESSED HOLY TUESDAY!

"I will sing for your salvation."—Ps 71

Gospel: John 13: 21-33, 36-38

21 When Jesus had said these things, he was troubled in spirit; and he testified, and said: Amen, amen I say to you, one of you shall betray me.
22 The disciples therefore looked one upon another, doubting of whom he spoke.
23 Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, and said to him: Who is it of whom he speaketh?
25 He therefore, leaning on the breast of Jesus, saith to him: Lord, who is it?
26 Jesus answered: He it is to whom I shall reach bread dipped. And when he had dipped the bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.
27 And after the morsel, Satan entered into him. And Jesus said to him: That which thou dost, do quickly.
28 Now no man at the table knew to what purpose he said this unto him.
29 For some thought, because Judas had the purse, that Jesus had said to him: Buy those things which we have need of for the festival day: or that he should give something to the poor.
30 He therefore having received the morsel, went out immediately. And it was night.
31 When he therefore was gone out, Jesus said: Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.
32 If God be glorified in him, God also will glorify him in himself; and immediately will he glorify him.
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me; and as I said to the Jews: Whither I go you cannot come; so I say to you now.
36 Simon Peter saith to him: Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered: Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow hereafter.
37 Peter saith to him: Why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thee.
38 Jesus answered him: Wilt thou lay down thy life for me? Amen, amen I say to thee, the c**k shall not crow, till thou deny me thrice.

HOLY MONDAY ✝️

Gospel: John 12:1-11
Six days before Passover Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. They gave a dinner for him there, and Martha served, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at table with him.
Mary took a liter of costly perfumed oil
made from genuine aromatic nard
and anointed the feet of Jesus and dried them with her hair; the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil. Then Judas the Iscariot, one of his disciples, and the one who would betray him, said, “Why was this oil not sold for three hundred days' wages
and given to the poor?"
He said this not because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief and held the money bag and used to steal the contributions.
So Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial.
You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me."

The large crowd of the Jews found out that he was there and came, not only because of him, but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. And the chief priests plotted to kill Lazarus too,
because many of the Jews were turning away
and believing in Jesus because of him.

SAINT OF THE DAY | APRIL 05
ST. VINCENT FERRER

Born in Valencia to parents of noble lineage, Vincent completed his philosophy at age 14 and joined the Dominicans at 17. In 1384 he became professor at the cathedral school, and in 1391 adviser to King John I of Aragon and confessor to the queen. On the election of Cardinal Piedro de Luna as Pope Benedict XIII at avignon, Vincent became his Grand Penitentiary and confessor, and in 1399 legate a latere Christi with full powers to preach penance and prepare the faithful for God’s judgement.

Poorly clad and travelling mostly on foot throughout France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Germany, England, Scotland and Ireland, he drew huge throngs of people with his well-prepared sermons that no church was found adequate enough to accommodate! Stupendous miracles of healing marked his progress. He evidently had the gift of tongues, for in each of these countries, with all their different languages, he steadily succeeded in touching the hearts of his hearers and awakening their consciences, frequently pausing to enable his hearers to recover from weeping. In Spain alone he brought 25,000 Jews and 8,000 Moors into the Church, in northern Italy and southeastern France thousands of Waldensians and Cathari, too; unlettered peasants came closer to the Church.

Blessed with the gift of prophecy, Vincent once singled out in a crowd in Alessandria (northwestern Italy) the youthful Saint Bernardine of Siena who was to later evangelize his native Italy. An indication of the esteem in which Vincent was held throughout Spain can be gauged from the fact that in 1409 he was appointed one of the judges to decide upon the successor to the throne, Ferdinand of Castile owing his election to his influence.

To Vincent goes the credit for the dramatic end to the 36-year long schismatic disharmony in the Church. Having failed to urge the antipope Benedict XIII, first in 1408 and then in 1415, to resign in favour of Clement VII (living at Avignon, France), Vincent mounted the pulpit before a huge assembly presided over by Benedict himself and him. Abandoned by his supporters Benedict instantly fled!

Vincent’s entire life was one of great austerity. He slept little and prayed much, fasting rigorously. He died in 1419 while evangelizing Brittany and was canonized in 1455.

Reflection: “Many religious glory in the name of poverty but shun the sufferings and humiliations which are attached to it. They glory in the name but fly from the reality” (Saint Vincent Ferrer).
