"He answered, 'Because the secrets of the kingdom of heaven have been given for you to know, but it has not been given to them.'" - Matthew 13:11 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
Jesus' disciples, including at least the Twelve (Matthew 10:1–4) and perhaps others, have come to Him about the parables He is teaching the crowds. It is likely this conversation takes place after Jesus has finished teaching the crowds while sitting in the boat on the Sea of Galilee (Matthew 13:1–2). The disciples have asked Jesus why He is speaking to the people in parables.

When Jesus uses them, parables often take the form of small stories. These are meant to symbolize larger truths about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus' answer shows how differently He sees the motives of the large crowds that come to hear Him, as compared to His own disciples.

Jesus tells the disciples that it has been given to them to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. It has not been given to those in the crowds, the general population of Israel, at large. Jesus wants His disciples to know that a) He expects them to understand the parables and the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, b) their understanding of those things is a gift to them, not a result of their own effort or wisdom; and c) that others in Israel have not been given the same gift.

What are the secrets of the kingdom of heaven? Jesus' parables were intended to reveal how the kingdom of heaven worked and what it was like. The following verses will describe more specifically what these secrets are that are given to some and kept from others.

"6 Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." - Philippians 4:6-7 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
Because the Lord is at hand, or is about to return (Philippians 4:5), believers should set their lives and thoughts in certain ways. Paul begins with a contrast between anxiety and prayer. He notes believers shouldn't be "anxious about anything." This does not imply a complete lack of concern. Nor does it mean Christians are to be careless. Instead, it means that believers should not be fearful, paranoid, or uneasy. Why not? Believers can speak directly with God, the maker of heaven and earth, who has all power and authority, who is in total control of the situation.

Those who choose prayer and trust during times of anxiety will experience the "peace of God." This peace offers three important positives. First, God's peace is supernatural and unexplainable. It is truly amazing how God can and will respond during times of difficulty.

Second, God's peace "will guard your hearts." The heart was seen as something to protect at all costs, since it influenced all of life (Proverbs 4:23). Paul held the Philippians believers "in my heart" (Philippians 1:7).

Third, God's peace will guard "your minds in Christ Jesus." This concept is connected with love for God and others (Matthew 22:37–40), as well as unity. Throughout Philippians, Paul expresses concern about the unity of the Philippian church, especially in the mind (Philippians 1:27; 2:2, 5). He mentions the mind again, this time as a statement that unity in the midst of disagreements requires a mind controlled by God's peace.

"For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call." - Acts 2:39 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
Peter has just called a crowd of Jews to repent and be baptized. Some of them must have recognized the words of John the Baptist who had his ministry on the Jordan River just east of Jerusalem three years prior. If so, they may remember John's harsh words to the Pharisees and Sadducees who believed they were saved by virtue of being descendants of Abraham. John told them don't rely on pedigree. "God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire" (Matthew 3:9–10).

Peter knows the apostles are to be Jesus' witnesses "in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8), but he doesn't yet know that this is more than a geographic description. His audience is of devout Jews and proselytes (Acts 2:5, 11), all dedicated to Judaism. It won't be for a while that the apostles recognize that when Jesus said He had "other sheep that are not of this fold" (John 10:16), He meant the wretched Samaritans (Acts 8:14–17) and the blasphemous Gentiles (Acts 10:44–48), as the Jews would have seen them.

Jesus' offer of salvation was always meant to be offered to the Jews first, but, equally, it was always meant to be offered to the Gentiles as well (Romans 1:16).

READ the BIBLE
" 13He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. 14 In Him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins." - Colossians 1:13-14 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
This brief verse concludes Paul's prayer for the Colossian Christians. Verse 13 explained that God has rescued believers in Christ from sin. This phrase used a Greek word meaning "delivered," or even "translated." God radically changes our status, completely removing the eternal penalty of sin from those who have faith in Christ. This verse concludes that thought, with a reminder of what Jesus has done: He has provided redemption. Redemption is a theme of both the Old and New Testaments, from the redemption of the Passover Lamb to the redemption of Christ on the cross. Through His sacrifice, Jesus provided a means for us to be forgiven for our sins.

This forgiveness of sin is at the heart of the gospel message (Matthew 26:28; Mark 1:4; Luke 3:3; 24:47). The earliest gospel preaching emphasized Jesus offering forgiveness of sins (Acts 5:31; 10:43; 13:38; 26:18). Hebrews 9:22 reminds us that "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." Christ's shed blood offers forgiveness to all who believe in Him (John 3:16).

READ the BIBLE
"8 Listen, my son, to your father's instruction, and don't reject your mother's teaching, 9 for they will be a garland of favor on your head and pendants around your neck." - Proverbs 1:8-9 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
Exodus 20:12 commands us to honor our mother and father. This goes beyond simple obedience and includes the ideas of respect and consideration. In the New Testament, Paul points out to us that this command is the first that comes with a promise (Ephesians 6:1–4). Paul also commands fathers to raise their children in the "discipline and instruction of the Lord." Here in the first chapter of Proverbs, we see Solomon giving the same exhortation to follow the wise instruction of your parents.

This suggestion is especially poignant, coming from Solomon. Although he was blessed by God with incredible wisdom (2 Chronicles 1:11–12), Solomon didn't always choose to use it. The book of Ecclesiastes records how he pursued many things, other than God, and found them to be empty and pointless (Ecclesiastes 2:9–11). In the end, Solomon came to the conclusion that following God's will is by far the most important goal of our lives (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14).

Verse 9 likens our parents to a garland or a pendant. This custom of adorning oneself with jewelry has not changed much in thousands of years. Jewelry is a status symbol and serves as an item of beautification. Solomon gives a clear picture that parents (more specifically, the instructions of parents) are not to be despised. Instead, they should be seen as treasures.

The wise instructions of a parent, like fine jewelry, are often obtained at great cost. They have history, value, and can even be passed along to future generations. Further, those who actively use the wisdom of their parents will see it reflected in their lives. Other people will notice the wise choices, wise behavior, and wise words, just as someone will notice the fine jewelry a person puts on. In terms of wisdom, this is far better than jewelry, since wisdom can be spread to others who see it and learn from it.

READ the BIBLE
"...Do you despise the riches of His kindness, restraint, and patience, not recognizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?" - Romans 2:4 CSB

RECEIVE the BREAD
This verse contains a crucial teaching about God's kindness. Paul is addressing anyone who doesn't think themselves guilty of the kinds of sin described in Romans 1, leading them to a judgmental attitude. Paul has stated emphatically in the previous verse that these people, actually all people, deserve the judgment of God for our sins.

Who could possibly think they would be excluded from God's judgment for sin? Some Gentiles—non-Jewish people—of Paul's day followed a philosophy of morality. Paul likely had in mind, however, the religious Jews who assumed their special national relationship with God exempted them from His judgment for personal sinfulness. This allowed them to be both judgmental about "sinful Gentiles" and complacent about their own sins.

Paul now calls this attitude presumptuous. These self-righteous sinners are presuming on or showing contempt for the riches of God's kindness, forbearance, and patience. Aware of God's vast goodness, they have miscalculated that He won't ever judge their sin, even though He may judge the sins of others. In the following verse, Paul will describe just how wrong and dangerous it is to ignore God's merciful warnings. For now, though, he says something fascinating: God's kindness is meant to bring sinners, all of us, to repentance.

In modern English, we sometimes hear the phrase "do not mistake my kindness for weakness." The same is true with God. His mercy in dealing with mankind is not a sign of indifference or frailty. It's meant to inspire us to thankfulness, to faith, and to repentance. God's temporary display of patience isn't a signal that our sin doesn't matter to Him, or that He is unwilling to express His wrath. Instead, He means to call us, through His display of kindness in this moment, to turn from our sin and follow after Him forever. That's true repentance.
