HOMILY | Graft and Corruption as Modern Golden Calves
Exodus 32:15–24, 30–34

There are moments in the Bible that feel painfully familiar—when we read them and think, “That’s exactly what’s happening today.” The story we heard in our first reading is one of those moments. Moses comes down from Mount Sinai, carrying the tablets of the covenant—God’s holy law—and what does he find? The people dancing around a golden calf. They had turned away from the God who delivered them and gave their loyalty to something they created with their own hands.

It was not just a sin. It was a betrayal. A breaking of the covenant. A rejection of the very God who had saved them.

This scene echoes loudly in our time—especially when we reflect on the moral sickness of graft and corruption.

1. Corruption is a breaking of the covenant

Every act of corruption—whether big or small—is a betrayal of the common good. It is a rejection of justice. It is a turning away from God’s commandments. Corruption is not just about stealing money. It is about wounding relationships, about betraying the trust that binds society together.

The golden calf may look different today, but the sin is the same: we choose to serve power, privilege, and wealth instead of the living God. We exchange divine justice for personal convenience. We break the covenant.

2. We must take responsibility—no more excuses

When Moses asked Aaron what happened, Aaron tried to deflect blame. He said, “You know the people—they’re bent on evil.” And then he added something almost comical: “I threw the gold into the fire and out came this calf!”

We laugh at Aaron’s excuse, but sometimes, we sound like him. We blame “the system,” “the culture,” “those above me,” or “those before me.” But real change begins when we stop blaming and start owning our part.

Corruption persists not only because of bad leaders, but also because of passive citizens, silent Christians, and people who look the other way.

3. We need modern-day Moseses—intercessors and reformers

What Moses did next is powerful. He went back up the mountain—not to abandon the people, but to intercede for them. He prayed, pleaded, and even offered his life so that they might be spared.

This is what we need today: modern-day Moseses—people who will stand in the breach:
- Honest officials who refuse bribes,
- Teachers who form consciences,
- Priests and bishops who speak the truth,
- Parents who teach their children integrity,
- Youth who choose the narrow path.

Let us be that generation that rebuilds what corruption has broken—first in our hearts, then in our communities, and then in our nation.

The good news is that God’s mercy is greater than our failures. Even after the golden calf, God did not abandon His people. He still journeyed with them. But He also called them to conversion.

Let us not wait for others to tear down the golden calves. Let it begin with us.
Let it begin with prayer.
Let it begin with a return to the covenant.
Let it begin with one honest heart—yours and mine.

For when we choose what is right, we bless not only ourselves, but generations after us.

đź“–Gospel of the Day (Matthew 20:20-28)

The mother of the sons of Zebedee approached Jesus with her sons
and did him homage, wishing to ask him for something.
He said to her,
"What do you wish?"
She answered him,
"Command that these two sons of mine sit,
one at your right and the other at your left, in your Kingdom."
Jesus said in reply,
"You do not know what you are asking.
Can you drink the chalice that I am going to drink?"
They said to him, "We can."
He replied,
"My chalice you will indeed drink,
but to sit at my right and at my left, this is not mine to give
but is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."
When the ten heard this,
they became indignant at the two brothers.
But Jesus summoned them and said,
"You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,
and the great ones make their authority over them felt.
But it shall not be so among you.
Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;
whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave.
Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served
but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."

PRAYER MEETING- July 11, 2025

đź“–Gospel of the Day (Matthew 10: 16-23)

Jesus said to his Apostles: “Behold, I am sending you like sheep in the midst of wolves; so be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves. But beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts and scourge you in their synagogues, and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake as a witness before them and the pagans.

When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be given at that moment what you are to say. For it will not be you who speak but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will hand over brother to death, and the father his child; children will rise up against parents and have them put to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but whoever endures to the end will be saved.

When they persecute you in one town, flee to another. Amen, I say to you, you will not finish the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes."

Gospel Reading: Matthew 9: 9-13

As Jesus passed by, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him. While he was at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners came and sat with Jesus and his disciples.

The Pharisees saw this and said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" He heard this and said, "Those who are well do not need a physician, but the sick do. Go and learn the meaning of the words, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' I did not come to call the righteous but sinners."

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

SMECCPI Music Committee contributed their talents during the Pentecost Sunday Mass celebration at St. Paul Novitiate Chapel. The Pentecost marks the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. It is often referred to as the "birthday of the Church" as it commemorates the beginning of the apostles' public ministry.

“FOLLOW ME”

Prayer Meeting: June 06
Prayer Leader: DULAY COUPLE

Gospel Reading:

Gospel of the Day (John 21: 15-19)

After Jesus had revealed himself to his disciples and eaten breakfast with them, he said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Amen, amen, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to dress yourself and go where you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go."
He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, "Follow me."
