JUNE 24 | SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST ๐Ÿ™

On June 24, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, one of the few saints whose birth is commemorated in the liturgical calendar. This special feast highlights the unique mission entrusted to St. John by Godโ€”to prepare the way for the coming of Jesus Christ.

Even before his birth, John's life was marked by God's grace and purpose. He was the voice crying out in the wilderness, calling people to repentance and pointing them toward the Savior. His humility is beautifully reflected in his words: "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3:30).

St. John the Baptist reminds us that our lives find their true meaning when they lead others closer to Christ. His courage, faithfulness, and unwavering commitment to the truth continue to inspire Christians throughout the world.

As we celebrate his nativity, let us ask for the grace to imitate his humility, his zeal for God's Kingdom, and his readiness to proclaim the Good News through both our words and our lives.

Heavenly Father,

As we welcome this new week, we lift our hearts to You in gratitude and trust. Thank You for the gift of another day, for the blessings of the past week, and for the opportunity to begin again under Your loving care.

Lord, walk with us in every step we take. Guide our minds, our words, and our actions so that all we do may bring glory to Your name. Bless our work, our studies, and our responsibilities with wisdom, perseverance, and purpose.

When challenges arise, grant us courage. When we grow weary, renew our strength. When uncertainty clouds our path, fill us with Your peace and help us trust in Your divine plan.

TOMORROW IS THE TRADITIONAL FEAST
OF THE ASCENSION OF JESUS

Tomorrow, the Church celebrates the traditional Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, also known as Ascension Thursday โ€” one of the great solemnities of the Christian faith. Celebrated forty days after Easter, this feast commemorates the moment when Jesus Christ ascended bodily into Heaven before His disciples, completing His earthly ministry and opening the gates of eternal life for humanity.

Rooted in the earliest centuries of Christianity and firmly established by the 4th century, the Ascension is far more than a farewell scene. It is a proclamation of victory. Christ, having conquered sin and death through His Passion and Resurrection, now returns to the Father in glory. Yet He does not abandon His people. Before ascending, He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit and commissions His disciples to continue His mission: โ€œGo therefore and make disciples of all nationsโ€ (Matthew 28:19).

Traditionally, the feast is observed on a Thursday โ€” exactly forty days after Easter Sunday โ€” reflecting the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles. This year, Ascension Thursday falls on May 14, 2026, although in many dioceses the celebration is transferred to the following Sunday, May 17, so that more of the faithful may participate fully in this sacred mystery.

One of the most meaningful liturgical moments associated with the Ascension is the extinguishing of the Paschal Candle after the Gospel or after Communion. Throughout the Easter season, the candle symbolizes the risen Christ present among His people. Its extinguishing signifies Christโ€™s visible departure from the earth, while also reminding believers that His presence continues sacramentally through the Church, the Eucharist, and the Holy Spirit.

The Ascension invites Christians to lift their eyes toward Heaven while remaining faithful in their mission on earth. It reminds us that our true homeland is not of this world and that Christ reigns eternally at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us.

As we celebrate this holy feast, may our hearts be filled with hope and renewed faith. Christ has ascended, not to leave us behind, but to prepare a place for us. And until that glorious day when we are united with Him in Heaven, may we continue to live as His witnesses in the world.
