TOMORROW IS THE TRADITIONAL FEAST
OF THE ASCENSION OF JESUS

Tomorrow, the Church celebrates the traditional Feast of the Ascension of the Lord, also known as Ascension Thursday โ€” one of the great solemnities of the Christian faith. Celebrated forty days after Easter, this feast commemorates the moment when Jesus Christ ascended bodily into Heaven before His disciples, completing His earthly ministry and opening the gates of eternal life for humanity.

Rooted in the earliest centuries of Christianity and firmly established by the 4th century, the Ascension is far more than a farewell scene. It is a proclamation of victory. Christ, having conquered sin and death through His Passion and Resurrection, now returns to the Father in glory. Yet He does not abandon His people. Before ascending, He promises the coming of the Holy Spirit and commissions His disciples to continue His mission: โ€œGo therefore and make disciples of all nationsโ€ (Matthew 28:19).

Traditionally, the feast is observed on a Thursday โ€” exactly forty days after Easter Sunday โ€” reflecting the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles. This year, Ascension Thursday falls on May 14, 2026, although in many dioceses the celebration is transferred to the following Sunday, May 17, so that more of the faithful may participate fully in this sacred mystery.

One of the most meaningful liturgical moments associated with the Ascension is the extinguishing of the Paschal Candle after the Gospel or after Communion. Throughout the Easter season, the candle symbolizes the risen Christ present among His people. Its extinguishing signifies Christโ€™s visible departure from the earth, while also reminding believers that His presence continues sacramentally through the Church, the Eucharist, and the Holy Spirit.

The Ascension invites Christians to lift their eyes toward Heaven while remaining faithful in their mission on earth. It reminds us that our true homeland is not of this world and that Christ reigns eternally at the right hand of the Father, interceding for us.
