Don't Call Yourself a Christian if You Deny Baptism in Jesus Christ's Name

A Christian is someone who believes and obeys the gospel of Jesus Christ. When the people on the Day of Pentecost asked what they must do, the apostle Peter did not offer multiple options. He gave a clear command:

"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..." (Acts 2:38)

The apostles consistently preached and practiced baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. Therefore, Apostolic believers contend that to reject baptism in Jesus' name is to reject the apostolic pattern established by Christ and His apostles.

Acts 2:38
"Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..."

Peter connected baptism in Jesus' name with the remission (forgiveness) of sins.

Acts 4:12
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
The saving name is Jesus.

Acts 8:16
"They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."

The Samaritan believers were baptized in Jesus' name.

Acts 10:48
"And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord."

Peter commanded Cornelius and his household to be baptized after receiving the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:5
"When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."

Believers who had only received John's baptism were rebaptized in Jesus' name.

Colossians 3:17
"And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus..."

Apostolic believers understand baptism to be one of the most important deeds done in Jesus' name.

Galatians 3:27
"For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ."

Baptism is presented as the means by which believers identify with and put on Christ.

Baptism in Jesus Christ's name is not a denominational preference but the biblical response to the gospel. Since every recorded Christian baptism after Pentecost was performed in Jesus' name, Apostolic believers maintain that Christians should follow the same apostolic example today. The rejection of Jesus-name baptism is a rejection of the apostolic teaching concerning the application of Christ's saving work to the believer.

If baptism is not necessary for salvation, why does the Bible connect baptism with the forgiveness of sins?

The Bible consistently presents baptism in Jesus' name as more than a public symbol. It is the God-ordained response of obedient faith where believers identify with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection and receive the promised forgiveness of sins. Baptism does not earn salvation by human works; rather, it is an act of faith in obedience to the gospel.

Acts 2:38 – "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins..."

Acts 22:16 – "Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord."
Mark 16:16 – "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved..."

1 Peter 3:21 – "Baptism doth also now save us..."

Romans 6:3–4 – Baptism unites believers with Christ's death, burial, and resurrection.

Forgiveness comes only through the blood of Jesus. That blood is applied to the repentant believer through obedient faith expressed in baptism in the name of Jesus Christ, as taught and practiced by the apostles. Baptism is not a work that earns salvation but an act of faith in God's saving promise.

Typology:
• Exodus 12 – Blood applied to doorposts
• Leviticus 14 – Blood applied for cleansing
• Hebrews 9:22 – “Without shedding of blood is no remission”

The blood of Jesus is applied to the believer’s life through water baptism in His name.
