James, in this context, addresses a message to the wealthy merchants who are confidently planning their business futures without considering God, calling their deeds evil and that it is a sin if you know it is wrong, yet you still do it (James 4:13-17). We are reminded to trust God and not rely on our own. James is not saying that life is worthless- he is arguing that human control is an illusion because life is short and unpredictable. Humans must live in active, daily submission to Godโs will rather than their own independent plans.
Our culture today teaches us to rage against insignificance because of fear of being nobodies- this was the fear of John the Baptistโs disciples when they thought he was going to be an insignificant man. But John states that to become greater, he must become less (John 3:30).
Let us look at the example of the CORRUPT TAX COLLECTORS (Luke 18:9-14). In the Phariseeโs prayer. It was not about God, but to declare his pride to Him and to compare that he is โgreaterโ than the tax collector. Not all prayers are acceptable to God just like of the Pharisee (James 4:3). When we pray, we come to God in humble prayer and not for the punishment of others. There will never be repentance if there is no humility because a sinner doesnโt acknowledge his sin (1 John 1:8-10), therefore they do not grow or will be given mercy (Proverbs 28:13).
THE MAD KING or King Nebuchadnezzar had to learn the hard way so he could be humbled (Daniel 4:28-37). When he was asked by God to repent, Nebuchadnezzar boasted his majesty and power instead. So, he was cursed by a voice from Heaven and for 7 years, he went insane and lived like a wild animal until he acknowledged that God alone rules the universe. Morality requires acknowledging the true source of your blessings. Taking credit for what God has allowed you to borrow will enable God to actively dismantle human arrogance to preserve His own glory. We are reminded to be humble always because our Master embodies humility, too.
Learn from THE MASTER Himself, who serves His disciples even though He is the highest of them all (John 13:1-7). Jesus came to Earth not to be served but to be of service. Do not be fully consumed with the culture that the lowest servant must be the only one to wash the feet because the heart of the kingdom is to serve one another. Humility is strength under control, used for the good of others. Jesus, with all His power, is humble- He is a perfect example.
You and I are the insignificant man. John the Baptist stepped back so He could give glory to God. He was famed (great), but he chose to be lowly to serve God. When you accept your own insignificance, you stop carrying the crushing weight of trying to be your own God. Live like the humble tax collector and John, unlike King Nebuchadnezzar who had to learn the hard way.
Stop looking at yourself and recognize the Significant Christ (Matthew 5:16).
