WEEK OF FIRE: FASTING
In the Bible, fasting is a spiritual discipline of abstaining from food (and sometimes drink) for a set period to focus intensely on God, express humility, seek guidance, repent, or prepare spiritually, not as self-punishment but to deepen one's relationship with Him, often accompanied by prayer and Bible study.
And if you're wondering how YOU can fast,
Here are 4 things we need to know about fasting
1. Pick A Purpose
Matthew 4:2 NIV
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
-Jesus fasted before His ministry—forty days and nights—before choosing His first disciples. He fasted to seek God's work through Him and stood firm through testing.
Note:
- Pick a reason why you are fasting
- Pray for our church, Prayer Items
- Prepare yourself in solemnity
- Take Fasting seriously
2. Stop Eating
Matthew 4:2-3 NIV
2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
-Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights, and after that, He was hungry. This emphasizes the absence of food, not due to scarcity, but of one's own will. The abstinence of eating doesn't mean God doesn't want us to eat, but to realign us and remind us that God's sustenance isn't based on food alone, but through the word of God. In fasting, we will get hungry. We will be tempted to eat. But know remember, we are fasting not just to not eat, but to seek God's presence for us to be closer to Him.
Note:
- Pick a time to fast
- Choose how you will Fast (Whole Day, Half Day, or Choose a Meal)
- Check yourself if you are capable of fasting (Health concerns)
3. Keep It Between You and God
Matthew 6:6-18 NIV
¹⁶ “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly, I tell you, they have received their reward in full. ¹⁷ But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, ¹⁸ so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
-Fasting is not to be flaunted around. It is not to boast for or be recognized for. Fasting is a form of surrender to God, but it doesn't need to be public. It is an intimate covenant between you and God. Be of a good aura even during fasting. You don't need to iterate that you are fasting. But when asked to eat while fasting, just say it calmly to avoid misconceptions or flaunting.
4. Pair Fasting With Prayer
Matthew 17:21 ISV
But this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.”
-The best way to fast is by accompanying it with prayer, especially when being tempted by the enemy. Prayer and fasting are powerful practices we can do. God moves in miraculous ways through fasting. Prayer and fasting must be intact, and when accompanied by studying God's word, it helps us understand God's voice more clearly and draw near to Him, so that we can achieve our purpose
Note:
- Pray while you fast
- Fasting plus prayer gives us focus
- Accompany with bible reading and devotion
