For me, NO.
Being an altar server does not mean that we no longer have our own choices, but as ministers at the altar, we should always consider whether our actions reflect the dignity of our service and the example we are called to give.
Some parishes and communities strictly prohibit smoking and va**ng, so as altar servers, we should respect and follow those rules. More importantly, va**ng should not become part of our identity or something we proudly promote while we are expected to be good examples to other young people and to our community.
This does not mean that an altar server who v**es is automatically a bad person. We all have our own weaknesses, struggles, and personal battles. However, if there is something we can avoid for the sake of our health, our witness, and the people around us, then why not make the effort to avoid it?
If we happen to see a priests or religious anyone else who smokes or v**es, we should not immediately judge or disrespect them because of their personal struggle. We do not know everything they are going through. However, understanding someone's struggle does not mean that we should imitate the habit or use it as an excuse for ourselves.
And most importantly, we should never compare one weakness or wrongdoing with a far more serious sin or crime just to make it seem acceptable. Wrongdoing remains wrong, and any form of abuseโespecially sexual abuseโis a grave matter that must never be ignored, tolerated, or hidden.
As Altar Servers, remember:
We are not called to be perfect. We are called to continually strive to become better servants of God.
So for me, if we can choose not to v**e, then it is better not to. Take care of your body, respect your parish rules, and be a good exampleโnot only when serving at the altar, but also in your everyday life.
