The story of Solomon illustrates a profound truth: a good beginning does not guarantee a good end. 📚
The name Solomon means "peace" and true to the name given to him, there was peace throughout his reign except on his final years. God even called him the name "Jedidiah" meaning His beloved. He was chosen and loved even from the beginning.
Solomon was favored by his father David. He was not the first born yet he was given the kingdom.
At the start of the story of Solomon, we can see that his heart was in the right standing with God. He humbled himself before God asking for nothing except wisdom to govern his people. God was pleased. He gave what he asked for and even added wealth and honor to it. Solomon became famous because of his wisdom and his fame spread throughout the surrounding nation.
What went wrong?
His many wives. 700 wives and 300 concubines to be exact! How he even managed to do this, I cannot imagine!
1 Kings 11:4 says,
[4] "As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been."
Solomon compromised. 😔He worship God, but he also worship the gods of his wives.
1 Kings 11:9, 11 also says,
[9] "The Lord became angry with Solomon because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice. "
[11] "So the Lord said to Solomon, “Since this is your attitude and you have not kept my covenant and my decrees, which I commanded you, I will most certainly tear the kingdom away from you and give it to one of your subordinates. "
The price of his compromise was the tearing down of his kingdom to two. And if only not for the covenant of God to David, the whole kingdom would have been taken away from Solomon's family.
The life of Solomon teaches us that God requires our whole devotion. It teaches us, not to forget who put us in the position we are in. It teaches us to guard our heart always. And it teaches us that there's always a consequence to the choices we make in life.
The Passion Translation of 1 Corinthians 10: 11- 12 says:
"These are all warning markers—danger!—in our history books, written down so that we don’t repeat their mistakes. Our positions in the story are parallel—they at the beginning, we at the end—and we are just as capable of messing it up as they were.
Don’t be so naive and self-confident. You’re not exempt. You could fall flat on your face as easily as anyone else. Forget about self-confidence; it’s useless. Cultivate God-confidence. "
In conclusion, we are not immune to tempation and failure that is why we need the help of God. Let's ask for his hand to protect us daily and for his grace to make us faithful till the end.
