The Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ, Inc. (PAJC) traces its roots back to the powerful revival that took place on the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, around A.D. 33. This was the day the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the early church, marking the beginning of a movement that has continued through the centuries. At the heart of PAJCโs foundation is the belief that it stands upon the teachings of the Apostles and Prophets, with Jesus Christ Himself as the cornerstone (Acts 2:1-42; Ephesians 2:19-20).
But the journey of PAJC, as we know it today, was not without twists and turns. As the gospel of Jesus Christ spread across the world, different groups emerged in various places, each with its own name, mission, and vision. In 1931, two such groupsโthe Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (PAW) and the Apostolic Churches of Jesus Christโcame together to form the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ (PAJC). It seemed like a powerful merger, combining resources, vision, and zeal to further the cause of Christ.
However, the union was short-lived. The haste with which the merger was formed, along with concerns over the name change and the direction of the new organization, led to some tensions. Many African American leaders, particularly those from the PAW, felt uneasy about the swift transition. They were concerned about the motivations behind the merger and whether their voices would be heard in the new PAJC. These concerns led them to ultimately part ways, and the PAW was re-established.
The early years of PAJC were marked by painful splits. Racial tensions played a significant role, with many Black members returning to the PAW due to unresolved issues. Yet, even in the face of division, the work of spreading the gospel continued. Despite these challenges, PAJC was not ready to be sidelined. In 1945, it merged with another groupโthe Pentecostal Churches, Inc. (PCI)โto form the United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI).
For a time, the new organization appeared to bring a sense of unity. From 1945 to August 1946, the two groups worked together as one. But dissatisfaction began to grow among a group of brethren who felt that the new UPCI did not align with their vision or ideals. This group, fueled by a desire to stay true to the original charter and mission of PAJC, revived the old name and re-established the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ, Inc. They continued the work they had started, knowing that their calling was not just to build an organization, but to remain faithful to the original purpose of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ.
