A MARTYR'S EXAMPLE
7 Deacons in the early church
Acts 6:5-6
[5] And the saying pleased the whole multitude. And they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, a proselyte from Antioch,
[6] whom they set before the apostles; and when they had prayed, they laid hands on them.

Acts 6:8-15
[8] And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people.
[9] Then there arose some from what is called the Synagogue of the Freedmen (Cyrenians, Alexandrians, and those from Cilicia and Asia), disputing with Stephen. [10] And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke. [11] Then they secretly induced men to say, “We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and God.”
[12] And they stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes; and they came upon him, seized him, and brought him to the council.
[13] They also set up false witnesses who said, “This man does not cease to speak blasphemous words against this holy place and the law;
[14] for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs which Moses delivered to us.”
[15] And all who sat in the council, looking steadfastly at him, saw his face as the face of an angel.

Acts 7:1-3
[1] Then the high priest said, “Are these things so?”
[2] And he said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,
[3] and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’

Acts 7:17-22 NKJV
[17] “But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt [18] till another king arose who did not know Joseph. [19] This man dealt treacherously with our people, and oppressed our forefathers, making them expose their babies, so that they might not live. [20] At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months. [21] But when he was set out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son. [22] And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.

Acts 7:44-49
[44] “Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as He appointed, instructing Moses to make it according to the pattern that he had seen, [45] which our fathers, having received it in turn, also brought with Joshua into the land possessed by the Gentiles, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers until the days of David, [46] who found favor before God and asked to find a dwelling for the God of Jacob. [47] But Solomon built Him a house. [48] “However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says: [49] ‘Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. What house will you build for Me? says the Lord, Or what is the place of My rest?

Acts 7:51-60
[51] “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the Holy Spirit; as your fathers did, so do you. [52] Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold the coming of the Just One, of whom you now have become the betrayers and murderers, [53] who have received the law by the direction of angels and have not kept it.” [54] When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. [55] But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, [56] and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!” [57] Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; [58] and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. [59] And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” [60] Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Summarize of chapter 7 in three points
1. Patriarchs (Acts 7:2-19) Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph
2. Prophets (Acts 20-43) The greatest of the Prophets is Moses
3. Place (Acts 7:44-50) He talks about the temple
Pointing Jesus Christ is the Savior

Stephen's example challenges us with 3 questions
1. DO I LOVE GOD MORE THAN MY OWN LIFE?
Martyr - is one who loves God more than his own life and is prepared to die if necessary because of a greater Love for God.

Different between a "murderer" and a "martyr"
• Martyr - one who is killed for his faith
• Murderer - one who kills himself in behalf of his faith trying to advanced their own agenda
• Martyrdom - is evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ (They did not believe this that Jesus actually resurrected from the dead)

2. DO I FORGIVE OTHERS WHO HAVE WRONGED ME?
- the final speech of Stephen was a prayer of forgiveness for his persecutors
Acts 7:60
[60] Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not charge them with this sin.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Romans 12:19 e3
[19] Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay,” says the Lord.

Psalms 103:10
[10] He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities.

3. AM I PREPARED TO SEE THE LORD WHEN I DIE?
This is the most important question, we need to answer
Acts 7:55-56
[55] But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
[56] and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”

Matthew 26:64
[64] Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Colossians 3:1
[1] If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.

Luke 19:10
[10] for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

"DEATH"
1. Fact of death
- Death - simply means "separation"
- Death plays mo favorites, cuts no deals, it's spares nobody
2. Faces of death
3 different descriptions of death
A. Physical death - separation of the soul and spirit from the body.
Genesis 35:18
[18] And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

B. Spiritual death
- separation of the soul from God
Romans 6:23
[23] For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

C. Second death
Revelation 20:11-15
[11] Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.
[12] And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.
[13] The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.
[14] Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.
[15] And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

Summary
Physical death - separation of sour from the body
Spiritual death - separation of the soul from God
Second death - separation of the soul from God forever and ever without any hope of it ever being changed

If you have been born once, you will die twice
If you have been born twice you will die once

John 11:25-26
[25] Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. [26] And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?”

3. Dear of death
- if you are a Christian, you should never really have to be tormented by the fear of death

Reasons why you should not be afraid of death
1. The Prince of death has been defeated
Hebrews 2:14-15
[14] Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, [15] and release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bo***ge.

2. The power of death has been destroyed
I Corinthians 15:55-57
[55] “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” [56] The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. [57] But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

3. The process of death has been described
Luke 16:19-31 NKJV
[19] “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day. [20] But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, [21] desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. [22] So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. [23] And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. [24] “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’ [25] But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. [26] And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’ [27] “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, [28] for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ [29] Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ [30] And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ [31] But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”

4. Picture of death has been developed
- What is it like to die? - it is like waking up in your own room
Psalms 23:4
[4] Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

The provision God has made for death, his wonderful promises is applicable only to those who put their trust in Christ. If you want to go to heaven, you have to do something about it here and now.

Psalms 90:10
[10] The days of our lives are seventy years; And if by reason of strength they are eighty years, Yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; For it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

3. They devoted themselves to be the breaking of bread
Acts 2:46
[46] So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart,

I Corinthians 10:16-17
[16] The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? [17] For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.

7 Things the Holy Spirit loves
I Corinthians 6:19-20
[19] Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? [20] For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

1. Worship Jesus
The Holy spirit (HS) has one Supreme mission
John 16:14-15
[14] He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
[15] All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

Today, worship Him like he's watching, because He is

2. Respond to His leading
The HS speaks, He prompts, He nudges, He whispers
Romans 8:14
[14] For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
John 1:12
[12] But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name:

TODAY, the next time you feel the hidges, don't wait, MOVE

3. Repent after He convicts you
This one is uncomfortable. The HS convicts you of sin, not to destroy you, not to shame you, but to save you.
I John 1:9
[9] If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Today's if there's something the HS has been convicting hlk about for days, weeks, months, stop right now, REPENT

4. Trust His witness over your emotions
Your feelings will lie to you
Romans 8:16 NKJV
[16] The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

TODAY, asks the HS to remind your Spirit of what is true, then believe it

5. Ask Him for help
This might be the most overlooked thing on this entire list
John 14:26
[26] But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

TODAY, stop handling everything alone, ask Him specifically loud of you need to. He is listening

6. Be kind to people
Don't skip this one
Ephesians 4:30-32 NKJV
[30] And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. [31] Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. [32] And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

Galatians 5:22 NKJV
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

TODAY, think of one person you have been online to, or cold toward to, or unforgiving of, The HS is asking you to change that Today.

7. Talk to Him
This is the most simple and the most neglected. Talk to the HS, not just about Him, but to Him. He is a person, He has feelings

John 14:17
[17] the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you
