Our Lady of Lourdes Appearing to Saint Bernadette

This painting presents the 1858 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in the grotto of Massabielle at Lourdes, France. Mary stands radiant in white with a blue sash, rosary on her arm and roses at her feet, visual signs of her Immaculate Conception and her role as a mother who intercedes for sinners. Bernadette kneels in poverty and wonder, embodying the “little one” through whom God chooses to speak, reminding viewers that grace often enters history through the humble and unnoticed.

The rocky grotto frames the scene like a natural sanctuary, suggesting that creation itself becomes a church when visited by God’s mercy, as at Lourdes where a spring of water became a sign of healing. In a Catholic reading, the image is not only historical memory but an invitation: to take up the rosary with Bernadette, to listen again to Mary who calls for penance and prayer, and to entrust our wounds to Christ through the hands of his Immaculate Mother.
