DOCUMENTED INCIDENTS IN HISTORY WHEN ASIANS WERE ADMITTED INTO THE INDEPENDENT ORDER OF ODD FELLOWS:
Prior to 1853 - several Mongolians and descendants of similar races were admitted as members of the IOOF in the United States on the decision of the Grand Lodge of the United States (Sovereign Grand Lodge).
1870 - A Chinese, brother Maa Mon Chinn, was initiated in an IOOF lodge in Tasmania, Australia.
1885 - Quong Tart (Mei Guangda) was admitted in an IOOF lodge in Sydney, Australia.
1902 - A Japanese named "Brother Shimidzu" was initiated by Dexter Lodge of the IOOF in New York.
1944 - several people of "Malayan race" joined the IOOF and became "members of outstanding quality".
1962 - persons of pure Polynesian and Oriental ancestry were initiated as members in Hawaii.
1964 - the Rebekah Assembly President in Switzerland was half-Indonesian.
1966 - a woman of Malayan ancestry became the President of the Rebekah Assembly in The Netherlands.
2007 - brother Richard Kim became the first member of Asian-Polynesian ancestry to be elected as Sovereign Grand Master of The Sovereign Grand Lodge, I.O.O.F.
Many of these incidents happened way before the Civil Rights' Movement and at a time when many Western countries imposed and passed racial segregation laws in schools, churches, lodges, restaurants, public transportation, toilets and even drinking fountains.
