Warmest CONGRATULATIONS to Bro Fred Magallano and Sis Tessie Lim for being among the 2024 Papal Awardees for their dedicated and selfless service to the Catholic Church and the Diocese of Dumaguete. You make us all proud and inspired to serve the Lord in any way we can.

Indeed, God rewards all His faithful servants. The Eternal Reward of all the Faithful Servants is not the praise of men, but praise from God. "Well done, good and faithful servant, enter into the joy of your Master." (Mt. 25:21)

STATEMENT OF SAINT ANDREW PARISH, AMLAN, ON THE WEDDING ISSUE

THE TRUTH. It is with deep concern that we issue this statement about what happened during the wedding in Amlan Parish last June 8, 2024. The wedding ceremony was officially scheduled at 8:00 A.M. that day. That schedule was set a month before. However, on the night before the wedding, one of the lady sponsors went to the bride and groomโ€™s house and told them that the wedding was moved to 9:30 a.m. and that they should not be in a hurry. She relayed this information in an unofficial capacity. This is unfortunate since there was no instruction at all from anyone in the Parish Office that there are changes in the schedule since there was a scheduled Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. of that same morning. Parish Office Staff believe that the lady sponsor may have misread the dates written on the bulletin which she perused the night before.

On June 8, 2024, instead of arriving for the 8:00 AM wedding Mass, the bride and the groom arrived at around 9:00 AM. Despite the fact that they were late by an hour, still our Assisting Priest celebrated the Mass out of charity to the couple. But he had to hurriedly make some adjustments, by starting when he saw the bride at the Church entrance, and after sending word to the bereaved family waiting outside the Church that there is going to be a delay in the Funeral Mass and to please wait until the wedding is over. On that day, there were ten other schedules to be served by the Priests. That is the truth about what happened from our side.

OUR APOLOGY. However, we humbly admit the fact that along the way, there were statements made carried away by emotions. Hence, we express our sincere apology to the bride and the groom, to their respective families who were directly offended by the turn of these events, and to the people who have seen our humanity as Priests in a time when we were weakest of any possible control. We also apologize and express gratitude to the bereaved family who were made to wait for the wedding to be finished. Pope Francis reminds us that "Priests have to bring compassion and forgiveness in the daily grind of life like Jesus the Lord". Yet, we also ask for your kind indulgence for the times we were short in meeting that call. In the midst of this unfortunate event, please pray for us as we struggle with our frailties. We pray for the peace of everyone concerned in this event. We hope that the Lord of love will bless our Community with the grace of unity and peace - always!

May God bless us all!

(From Msgr. Albert Erasmo G. Bohol, PC, Parish Priest, Saint Andrew Parish, Amlan, 10 June 2024)

Reflection: Todayโ€™s glorious solemnity is the ultimate cause of all joy, fulfillment, happiness, and glory. If Jesus only died on the Cross, destroying death, something would be missingโ€”the restoration of life into a transformed and glorified living. Easter is not only about the forgiveness of sins, itโ€™s about the temporal and eternal glorification of every human soul who dies and rises with Christ. When we focus upon the Gospel and consider the many lessons Jesus taught and the example He set, the Cross is often considered the difficult message and Easter the easy message. But is it?

The message of the Cross, as presented to us through both Jesusโ€™ teachings and His lived example, is certainly challenging. Each one of us is called to the same depth of selfless surrender of our lives to the Fatherโ€™s will. We must each die completely to ourselves, be purified from every sin and every attachment to sin, from every bad habit and every worldly thought, and from everything that is not God and God alone. When our calling to die with Christ and to embrace His Cross is clearly understood, as it has been by the saints, it is likely that Christians become overwhelmed at the seemingly daunting and impossible task of dying in and with Christ.

When it comes to the Resurrection, one might be tempted to say that it is easy to accept the message it presents. New life in Christ, the fullness of joy, complete transformation, and eternal beatitude in Heavenโ€”these initially appear easy to embrace. However, the challenge that the profound reality of Easter presents to us is that we can be certain that our current understanding of what it means to share in the Resurrection of Christ is but the faintest shadow of the reality. In truth, very few people in this life have come close to understanding the glory to which we are called on account of the Resurrection. Saints Francis of Assisi, Catherine of Sienna, John of the Cross, Thรฉrรจse of Lisieux, to name a few, are among those who penetrated the mystery of Easter while still here on earth. They achieved this spiritual knowledge only by fully dying with Christ through a life of profound prayer, penance, and charity that completely united their souls to the Most Holy Trinity.

As we celebrate Easter, it is important to know that we do not yet know all that is promised to us by the Resurrection of Christ. If we can at least know that, then our spiritual appetites will make us hungry to know. Too often, Christians go through life satisfied with the most basic understanding of the Gospel. We know that God became man, lived His life, gathered followers, taught and performed miracles, died on the Cross, rose again, ascended into Heaven, and sent the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, we have hope in His promise that if we remain in His grace, then we will share in Heaven after we die. But this is an exceptionally incomplete view of the full reality that has been comprehended in this life by the saints. It is their understanding we must seek with every power of our souls.

What does it mean to share in the new life of Christ? What does it mean to share in the glory of the Resurrection? What will Heaven be like for those who enter into the highest realms of glory in this life compared to those who only do the basics? What will the New Heavens and the New Earth be like when Jesus returns in all His glory for the Final Judgment? If these are questions you have never deeply pondered and probed, then know that the answers that await you are more glorious than you could ever imagine. In other words, if you were to sit quietly and spend all day trying to imagine the best and most glorious life, trying to use your mind to draw a picture of the happiness and full joy of Heaven, you can be certain that you could never even come close to imagining the reality. That humble fact ought not discourage you; it should fill your conscience with a desire to know what you do not know. That is the first step.

A deep and vast spiritual comprehension of the joy of sharing fully in the Resurrection of Christ can only be given to us by a direct infusion of grace by God Himself. When a soul receives this infused knowledge, they become so overwhelmed with wonder and awe that they realize that committing even the smallest sin is absolute foolishness and is the path to the loss of everything. They realize that if they were to gain everything this world has to offerโ€”every comfort, wealth, power, and prestigeโ€”they would be absolutely miserable compared to the person who shares fully in the Resurrection. They realize that the only thing worth anything is the complete abandonment of oneโ€™s life to the will of God, a willingness to suffer anything and everything for Christ, to serve and not be served, to forgive everyone completely, to love with every fiber of their being, and to continuously remain in a state of prayerful recollection with God.

If living such a life seems impossible, itโ€™s not. It only seems that way when we fail to grasp the prize that awaits those who strive for the perfection of divine union. The Easter message and mystery is not just about being good and happy. Itโ€™s not just about trusting in the hope of Heaven after we die. The fullness of the message and mystery of Easter can only be understood if we begin the long and difficult journey toward divine union. Only those who begin it in haste have a chance of completing it. Begin it today by acknowledging that there is so much that you do not know. There is so much that God is calling you to and wants to bestow upon you. There is more joy in the Resurrection of Christ than anything else in life. Donโ€™t aim for the lowly and passing things of lifeโ€”aim for the highest heights of glory. Seek to understand the Resurrection this Easter so that you will be able to share more fully in the higher grades of glory that God wants to bestow upon you.

Prayer: My Resurrected Lord, the glory to which You have called me is beyond my natural capacity to comprehend. I could never imagine what awaits those who fully, and without reserve, surrender their lives to You and obey every aspect of the Fatherโ€™s will. Please fill me with a realization that there is so much more that I do not know. Inflame my soul with a desire to quench that longing to know You more so as to share more fully in the glories of the Resurrection while here on earth and forever in Heaven. Jesus, I trust in You.

Maundy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, commemorates the Last Supper. On Holy Thursday, Jesus institutes the Eucharist and washes the feet of His apostles. This is captured in John 13:5, which depicts the humility, service, and love of Christ that we, His disciples, are called to emulate. In a culture where washing feet was a task relegated to servants, Jesus, the Son of God, takes on the role of a servant and thereby ordains His apostles as the first ministerial priests of the New Covenant (see Matt 20:25โ€“28; 18:1โ€“4).

When He had washed their feet, and taken His garments, and resumed his place, He said to them, โ€œDo you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord; and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one anotherโ€™s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to youโ€ (John 13:12โ€“15).

The Holy Thursday foot-washing ceremony has deep religious significance: according to Tradition, it represents the service and charity of Christ, who came โ€œnot to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for manyโ€ (Matt. 20:28).

The season of Lent ends on the evening of Holy Thursday, which commences the Easter Triduum or โ€œPaschal Triduum,โ€ a three-day period named after Jesusโ€™s offering Himself as the New Covenant Passover Lamb of God, and which concludes with Evening Prayer (Vespers) on Easter Sunday.

This is the joyous response we will cry out to our Lord when we permit Him to enter our souls. โ€œHosanna in the highest!โ€ The word โ€˜hosannaโ€™ is not a cry of praise but a plea for salvation. It is derived from a Hebrew word meaning โ€œsave, please,โ€ or โ€œsave now.โ€ The root words are found in Psalm 118:25: โ€œSave us, we beseech thee, O Lord!โ€ We must sincerely offer this prayer as we enter into Holy Week because it goes to the heart of the weekโ€™s two central messages: We need a Savior, and Jesus is that Savior.

Do you realize you need a Savior? On the surface it might be easy to answer, โ€œYes!โ€ But how deep is that realization within your soul? Sometimes we can fall into the subtle temptation to think, โ€œIโ€™m a good person; I deserve Heaven.โ€ But thinking this way is contrary to the prayer, โ€œHosanna!โ€

By extending the prayer to โ€œHosanna in the highest!โ€ we are saying, โ€œO Lord, the divine one from Heaven, save us from our sins!โ€ In order to pray this prayer deeply, sincerely, and in the way it is intended to be prayed, it is essential that we come to a profound realization of our need for the Messiah. Without His Incarnation, death, and Resurrection, we would not be saved. Instead, we would die in our sins and forever live in misery. That fact can be hard to accept, but if we do comprehend this mysterious truth, we will be able to cry out, โ€œHosanna in the highest!โ€

Recognizing our need for a Savior is humbling. We must admit our weakness and complete inability to save ourselves. But the good news is that we do not need to save ourselves. Though we are called to a life of charity and good works, those acts are not the source of our salvationโ€”Jesus is. Once in a state of grace, it is our unfathomable privilege to share in His act of love by participating in the charity and mercy flowing into our lives from His, and bestowing it upon others.

Jesusโ€™ triumphant entry into the holy city of Jerusalem symbolizes His entry into your soul by grace. When He comes to you, lay the palms of your gratefulness and reverence before Him. Cry out, โ€œSave me, Lord, I beseech You! Hosanna in the highest!โ€ If you can humble yourself today on Palm Sunday and more fully welcome your Savior into your soul, then the mysteries we participate in this Holy Week will be much more fruitful. The days leading up to the Triduum will inspire you to ponder what is about to happen. Holy Thursday will invite you to share more fully in the Eucharistic Banquet of Christโ€™s Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity, and will lead you to a more profound life of humble service in imitation of our Lord. Good Friday is the most powerful and transformative day of the year on which we share in the saving Sacrifice of Christโ€™s Cross. We do not celebrate the Mass that day because the day itself is the instrument of the grace of the Cross. Holy Saturday is a day of hopeful anticipation, and Easter Sunday is the culminating day of joy over Christโ€™s victory.

Ponder the week ahead and resolve to enter into one day at a time. Begin today by humbling yourself and acknowledging you need a Savior, the one and only Savior of the world. Cry out to Him and beg Him to save you.

Hosanna to You, my Lord and Savior, hosanna in the highest! Please come to me and save me. Help me to see my absolute need for Your saving action in my life and to welcome You more fully into the temple of my Soul. Hosanna in the highest! Jesus, I trust in You!
