Easter Sunday

Easter Sunday: Overview and Significance

Date and Timing:- Easter Sunday celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ on the third day after His crucifixion. The date of Easter varies each year, falling between March 22 and April 25. It is determined as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox (around March 20).

Historical Context:
- Early Christians originally celebrated Easter on the 14th of Nissan, aligning with the Jewish Passover. However, this practice led to disagreements among early Christians.
- In 325 A.D., the Council of Nicaea, led by Emperor Constantine I, established that Easter should be observed on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the vernal equinox. This change aimed to focus Easter solely on the celebration of Jesus' resurrection.

Etymology and Tradition:
- The name "Easter" is believed to be derived from Eostre, a pagan Anglo-Saxon spring goddess whose festival was held in spring. The association with the spring season aligns with the timing of Jesus' resurrection. Despite the name's origins, Easter is universally celebrated by Christians to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus

Significance:
- Easter is the cornerstone of Christian faith, symbolizing Jesus' victory over death and His promise of eternal life for believers. The celebration includes various traditions and customs that reflect the joy and significance of the resurrection.

Date and Context:
- Holy Saturday is the final day of Holy Week, observed between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. On this day, Jesus' body lay in a tomb, which had been donated by Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the Jewish Council who did not agree with the council's actions against Jesus but did not defend Him during the trial.

Jewish Law and Trial:
- Jewish law required the Sanhedrin (the Jewish council) to meet only during the day and not during Passover, with decisions made in the Hall of Hewn Stone to be valid. These rules were ignored during Jesus' trial, which was conducted at night at the Chief Priest's residence. The Jewish leaders bypassed their own laws in their haste to condemn Jesus.

Guarding the Tomb:
- On Holy Saturday, the Chief Priest and Pharisees requested Pilate to guard Jesus' tomb, fearing that His disciples might steal the body and claim He had risen. This request was made on the Sabbath, indicating their willingness to disregard their own laws to prevent any claim of resurrection.

Observances and Traditions:
- End of Holy Saturday: The observance of Holy Saturday lasts until dusk or 6:00 p.m. At this time, the Easter Vigil begins.

- Easter Vigil: This church service starts with the blessing of a
new fire and the lighting of the Paschal Candle. The Vigil includes the renewal of baptismal vows and the performance of baptisms for new members and children, symbolizing the transition from death to new life in Christ.

Date and Timing:
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. For Jews at the time, the day began at 6:00 p.m. on the previous evening (Thursday). Thus, Good Friday begins at this time on Thursday and continues through Friday.

Events of the Day:
-Arrest and Trials: After Jesus was arrested in the Garden of
Gethsemane by Temple guards, He was first taken to the house of Annas, the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the Chief Priest. He was then brought to Caiaphas' house, where the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, convened. During His trial, Jesus faced false testimonies, but the charges were inconsistent. When asked under oath if He was the Messiah, Jesus affirmed this, leading to His condemnation for blasphemy.

-Peter's Denial: While Jesus was at the High Priest's residence, Peter, one of His disciples, initially defended Him by cutting off a guard's ear but later denied knowing Jesus three times.

-Roman Trial: The next morning, Jesus was brought before Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor. He was accused of inciting rebellion, opposing taxes to Caesar, and claiming to be the King of the Jews. Pilate, wanting to avoid a riot, succumbed to the crowd's demands and handed Jesus over for crucifixion, symbolically washing his hands of the matter.

-Crucifixion and Burial: Jesus was forced to carry His cross to
Golgotha (Calvary) and was crucified, suffering for about six hours before dying around 3:00 p.m. His body was taken down and buried in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, following Jewish burial customs.

Significance and Observance:
-Fasting and Abstinence: Good Friday is observed as a day of
fasting for Catholics, allowing one full meal and two smaller meals that do not equal a full meal, with abstention from meat.

-Liturgical Practices: The day is somber, with no celebration of the Eucharist, ringing of church bells, or regular baptisms, except for those in danger of death. The day is termed "Good" Friday because, despite the sorrow of Jesus' death, it is believed to have redeemed humanity from sin, bringing profound benefit to all.

Date and Observance:

Timing: Holy Thursday, or Maundy Thursday, is observed on the Thursday before Easter. It is the fifth day of Holy Week, following Spy Wednesday and preceding Good Friday.

Commemoration:
-Institution of the Eucharist: This day commemorates the Last
Supper, during which Jesus instituted the Eucharist. The Last Supper, shared with His disciples, was a Passover feast, celebrating God's deliverance of the Israelites from Egypt.

Passover Connection:
-Feast of Unleavened Bread: The meal was part of the Passover celebration, where only unleavened bread is used (Exodus 12:34). At this meal, Jesus did not offer the lamb traditionally associated with Passover because He presented Himself as the Passover lamb.

Key Events:
-Washing of Feet: Jesus humbled Himself by washing His disciples' feet, showing His service and friendship.

-Eucharistic Institution: He took bread and wine, declaring them to be His body and blood, and instructed His disciples to continue this practice in His memory.

Traditional Observance:
-Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Catholics traditionally honor the Blessed Sacrament on the night of Holy Thursday. Although the Last Supper was on Thursday night, it was considered Friday by the ancient Jewish calendar, which begins a new day after 6:00 p.m.

Conclusion:
- Farewell: The Last Supper also served as a farewell to His disciples, setting the stage for His Passion and Crucifixion.

Wednesday of Holy Week is often called Spy Wednesday. Why? Because this is the day Judas Iscariot spies on Jesus, secretly plotting to have him arrested.

On this day, Judas goes to the chief priests and asks them how much money theyโ€™d be willing to give him if he turned Jesus in. Thirty pieces of silver is enough for him to turn on Jesus, all of the disciples, and the future he had with a life of faith.

Wednesday of Holy Week is a powerful opportunity to reflect on the following: Where in my life have I experienced betrayal or a violation of trust? Am I holding onto that pain or have I invited Jesus into it? Where have I betrayed myself or lost the trust of others? How can I seek forgiveness and make amends?

One common way to observe Spy Wednesday is to eat simple meals, offering the sacrifice as a prayer to Jesus.
