DON'T "FOLLOW YOUR HEART"
Because we need a new one! The heart (the center of our emotional life) which motivates us to do whatever it is that we do is deceitful above all things, so it often motivates us to do the opposite of what God wants us to do.
But we see something unique in the Bible about the heart:
Two prophets.
Two positions.
Two perspectives.
The prophet Jeremiah writes, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it? 'I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward each person according to their conduct, according to what their deeds deserve.'” (Jeremiah 17:9-10)
The prophet Ezekiel writes, "I [The Lord] will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws." (Ezekiel 36:26-27)
Both Jeremiah and Ezekiel recognize the truth about the heart:
(1) The heart is broken, deceitful, and needs repair
(2) The heart cannot be repaired by humans deceived by their hearts
(3) The heart can only be repaired by the One who knows the heart; God
The New Testament takes this imagery in Ezekiel and reveals to us that it is Christ's life, death, and resurrection which gives us a new heart through His Holy Spirit (Acts 2:17-18; 2 Cor. 3:6-18; Rom. 7:7-8:4; Heb. 8:6-10:39).
Yes, our heart is deceitful above all else. But also yes Christ can come in and change it so that we have a new heart that desires to love Him, love others, and make disciples.
The heart is deceitful, but Christ can change it. 😊
So don't follow it, but rather follow Jesus!
