October 20 | Saint Magdalene of Nagasaki

Magdalene was born in 1611 near Nagasaki, Japan, the daughter of devout Christian parents. While she was still young her mother, father, and siblings were martyred for the faith. In 1624 she became acquainted with two Augustinians, members of the Recollect Congregation, Francis of Jesus and Vincent of Saint Anthony, and was attracted by their deep spirituality. She became an Augustinian tertiary, teaching catechism to the young, seeking alms for the poor, encouraging her people in times of persecution. When these two friars were martyred, she placed herself under the spiritual guidance of two other Augustinians who eventually also received the crown of martyrdom. In 1629 she sought refuge in the hills of Nagasaki, sharing the sufferings of her fellow Christians, baptizing the young and visiting the sick. Because many Christians were renouncing their faith in the face of torture, she decided to encourage them through her own acceptance of persecution. In September 1634, dressed in the habit of a tertiary, she turned herself in to the anti-Christian civil authorities. In October of that same year she was subjected to the torture of the pit for 13 days. On the last day the pit was filled with water and she was drowned. Her body was burned and her ashes were dispersed to prevent the Christians from having any relics of her. Magdalene was beatified in 1981 and canonized by John Paul II on October 18, 1987.

Mga ka-lingkod, as we celebrate Laetare Sunday, the Fourth Sunday of Lent, today, let us know more about the significance of the rose-colored vestments, the rarest liturgical color of all.

The liturgical color rose is the rarest liturgical color that the Catholic Church use. There are only two feasts/Sundays in which it is permitted or is prescribed to use:

GAUDETE SUNDAY | Gaudete Sunday is the Third Sunday of Advent. This signifies the joy in the nearing birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Advent is the season of preparation for Christmas.

LAETARE SUNDAY | Laetare Sunday is the Fourth Sunday of Lent. This signifies the joy, not on the nearing Passion and Death of Christ, but on His glorious resurrection.

The color Rose means joy and happiness. Salvation is coming to illumine the world; the use of rose helps to tie into this spirit of gladness and joyfulness which the Church wishes to present to us. The word "Laetare" is a Latin word which translates to "Rejoice" in English.

Mga ka-lingkod, eight years ago, on March 13, 2013, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected by the College of Cardinals to become the 266th Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church. He succeeded Pope emeritus Benedict XVI whose pontificate lasted until February 28 of that year.

Pope Francis was the first pope elected from the continent of South America, the first pope from the southern hemisphere, and the first Jesuit pope.

Let us continue to pray for our Holy Father, the Vicar of Christ, His Holiness Pope Francis that he may continue his mission as the shepherd of the Church that Christ established, the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Happy 8th Papal Election Anniversary, Pope Francis!

For years, ISIS desecrated churches and massacred Christians in the ancient city of Mosul, decimating the Christian population in Iraq from 1.5 million in 2003 to less than 300,000 today. In another momentous day in history, Pope Francis, first among popes to visit Iraq, prays at the site of massacre - the Church in Mosul, signaling the return of Christians in the area and a symbolic gesture of interfaith dialogue between the three major Abrahamic Religions - Christians, Muslims and Jews in the ancient city of Ur, Abraham’s birthplace, bringing a message of hope to the world’s oldest and most persecuted Christian communities
