In John 10, we come to teaching from Jesus that is structured around two new “I am” statements; he presents himself as both the “good shepherd” and the “door” for his sheep. The “good shepherd” was highly anticipated in the Old Testament—particularly in Ezekiel 34, in which God condemns the abusive shepherds of his people and promises to be, himself, his people’s eternal good and their kind shepherd. Jesus begins by alluding to the shepherd metaphor, but he is met with confusion from his listeners (10:1–6). He then becomes more explicit, identifying himself as the “door” (10:7–10).

At the Feast of Dedication, Jesus continues to describe himself as the saving shepherd who will offer eternal life to his sheep. And not only is this true, but he further states that he is “one” with the Father. This causes the Jews to pick up stones in yet another failed attempt to kill him. The passage ends with Jesus demanding to know which of his good works have led the Jews to intend to murder him; they explain that they want to stone him because he has claimed to be equal with the Father. Jesus again insists that he is acting and speaking on God’s behalf, and he commands the Jews to believe in him. John concludes this passage by showing us that “many” do indeed believe in Jesus.

In John 10:11-21, Jesus uses the shepherd metaphor to show who He is and what He has come to do. He calls Himself the good shepherd, the One who protects the flock not by using the sheep, but by giving Himself for them. He contrasts this with the hired hand, who runs when danger comes and leaves the sheep exposed. John then shows the result, division. Some hear Jesus and are drawn in, while others reject Him and even call Him evil. The passage presses one clear question on every listener, will you recognize the Shepherd’s voice or refuse Him.

Some questions are bigger than money, plans, career, or even marriage. Psalm 15 asks the ultimate one. It is the question of who may sojourn in the Lord’s tent and who may dwell on His holy mountain. David is not talking about a short visit but about staying with God and belonging in His presence. The rest of the psalm sets before us what a life near God looks like, and it quietly points beyond us to the One who truly fits.
