Why Are Babies Baptized?
1. Because all are born with Original Sin
The Bible clearly says we are born with a fallen nature inherited from Adam and Eve:
📖Psalm 51:5 (NIV)
“Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.”
This means sin is not something we commit first, it’s something we inherit. Even innocent-looking babies carry this original stain, which baptism washes away.
📖Romans 5:12
“Just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so death spread to all people because all sinned.”
So, from birth, every human being needs redemption and baptism is God’s way of cleansing us from that sin and making us His children.
2. Jesus said baptism is necessary for entering the Kingdom
📖John 3:5
“No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
Even babies are called to be “born again” through the grace of baptism.
3. The Apostles baptized entire households
“She and her household were baptized.”
Acts 16:15
“He and all his family were baptized at once.”
Acts 16:33
“I also baptized the household of Stephanas.”
1 Corinthians 1:16
The word household (Greek: oikos) includes everyone; adults, servants, and children. The early Church clearly practiced baptizing families as a whole.
4. Baptism is a grace and a gift
Grace is freely given, not earned. Just as a baby receives food, care, and love before understanding them, a baby can also receive God’s saving grace through baptism.
5. Parents and godparents profess faith for the child
In infant baptism, the parents and godparents promise to raise the child in the Catholic faith until they can personally affirm it at Confirmation.
They act as the child’s voice before God, just as parents make other life-giving decisions for their children.
✨Babies are baptized because Jesus wants everyone including children to share in His grace, be freed from sin, and become part of His family from the start of life.✨
