𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐁𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐖, 𝐀𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐓𝐋𝐄

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW was one of the twelve who were called to the apostolate by our blessed Lord himself. Several learned interpreters of the Holy Scripture take this apostle to have been the same as Nathaniel, a native of Cana, in Galilee, a doctor in the Jewish law, and one of the seventy-two disciples of Christ, to whom he was conducted by Saint Philip, and whose innocence and simplicity of heart deserved to be celebrated by the mouth of our Redeemer himself. He is mentioned among the disciples who were met together in prayer after Christ’s ascension, and he received the Holy Spirit with the rest. Being eminently qualified by the divine grace to discharge the functions of an apostle, he was reported, by various ancient traditions, to have carried the gospel through the most barbarous countries of the East, penetrating into the remoter Indies. He returned again into the northwest part of Asia, and met Saint Philip at Hierapolis, in Phrygia. Hence he traveled into Lycaonia, where he instructed the people in the Christian Faith; but we know not even the names of many of the countries in which he preached. Saint Bartholomew’s last removal was traditionally into Great Armenia, where, preaching in a place obstinately addicted to the worship of idols, he was crowned with a glorious martyrdom. The modern Greek historians say that he was condemned by the governor of Albanopolis to be crucified. Others affirm that he was flayed alive, which might well enough consist with his crucifixion, this double punishment being in use not only in Egypt, but also among the Persians.

The angel spoke to me, saying,
“Come here.
I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
He took me in spirit to a great, high mountain
and showed me the holy city Jerusalem
coming down out of heaven from God.
It gleamed with the splendor of God.
Its radiance was like that of a precious stone,
like jasper, clear as crystal.
It had a massive, high wall,
with twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed
and on which names were inscribed,
the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel.
There were three gates facing east,
three north, three south, and three west.
The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation,
on which were inscribed the twelve names
of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.

Philip found Nathanael and told him,
“We have found the one about whom Moses wrote in the law,
and also the prophets, Jesus son of Joseph, from Nazareth.”
But Nathanael said to him,
“Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
Philip said to him, “Come and see.”
Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him,
“Here is a true child of Israel.
There is no duplicity in him.”
Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Before Philip called you, I saw you under the fig tree.”
Nathanael answered him,
“Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel.”
Jesus answered and said to him,
“Do you believe
because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree?
You will see greater things than this.”
And he said to him, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
you will see heaven opened and the angels of God
ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

𝐍𝐆𝐀𝐍𝐎𝐍𝐆 𝐌𝐎𝐓𝐈𝐍𝐃𝐎𝐆, 𝐌𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐇𝐎𝐃, 𝐔𝐆 𝐌𝐎𝐆𝐀𝐌𝐈𝐓 𝐎𝐆 𝐌𝐆𝐀 𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐀𝐀𝐍 𝐒𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐔𝐑𝐇𝐈𝐘𝐀?

Wala ba ka nakapangutana nganong 𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙜 𝙠𝙞𝙩𝙖, 𝙢𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙝𝙤𝙙 𝙠𝙞𝙩𝙖, 𝙢𝙤𝙜𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙩 𝙤𝙜 𝙩𝙪𝙗𝙞𝙜, 𝙥𝙖𝙣 𝙪𝙜 𝙗𝙞𝙣𝙤, 𝙪𝙜 𝙪𝙗𝙖𝙣 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙢𝙜𝙖 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙖𝙣 panahon sa atong mga liturhiyanhong kasaulogan?

Dili kini mga lihok nga walay kahulugan. Ang matag timaan ug simbolo sa Liturhiya adunay kahulugan ug nagtabang kanato sa pag-ampo.

1. 𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐚 𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐠𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐨𝐠 𝐦𝐠𝐚 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐭𝐚 𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐚𝐧.

Diha sa Liturhiya, gipadayag ang grasya sa Dios pinaagi sa mga timaan ug simbolo nga atong makita ug masinati (𝘤𝘧. 𝘚𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘮 7; 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤 𝘊𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘤𝘩 1145–1152).

Tungod kay kita adunay lawas, ang atong pagtuo gipahayag usab pinaagi sa mga butang nga makita (𝘤𝘧. 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1146).

𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧:

✠ Ang 𝐭𝐮𝐛𝐢𝐠 gigamit sa Bunyag isip timaan sa bag-ong kinabuhi diha kang Kristo (𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1213–1216).

✠ Ang 𝐩𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐠 𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐨 gigamit sa Eukaristiya isip mga timaan sa sakripisyo ni Kristo nga gitukod sa Kataposang Panihapon, diin kini nahimong iyang Lawas ug Dugo, atong espirituhanong pagkaon, tinubdan sa grasya, ug saad sa umaabot nga kahimayaan. (𝘤𝘧. 𝘚𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘮 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘶𝘮 47; 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1333–1340).

✠ Ang 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐥𝐞 nagpahinumdom kanato kang Kristo nga mao ang Kahayag (𝘤𝘧. 𝘗𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘚𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘴 82; 𝘤𝘧. 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1243).

✠ Ang 𝐩𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐨𝐧 sa bunyag nagsimbolo nga ang bag-ong nabunyagan nagsul-ob na kang Kristo (𝘤𝘧. 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1243).

✠ Ang 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐨 nagpadayag sa atong pagtahod ug pag-ampo nga misaka ngadto sa Dios (𝘤𝘧. 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘭 276; 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘮 141:2 & 𝘙𝘦𝘷. 8:3𝘧𝘧).

2. 𝐍𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐨 𝐧𝐠𝐚 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐠𝐚 𝐥𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐤?

Kita dili lamang mag-ampo sulod sa atong hunahuna. Naga-ampo usab kita pinaagi sa atong mga lihok ug mga postura (𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘊𝘊 1146–1148).

𝐏𝐢𝐩𝐢𝐥𝐚 𝐤𝐚 𝐦𝐠𝐚 𝐤𝐚𝐡𝐮𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐦𝐠𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐡𝐨𝐤 𝐝𝐢𝐡𝐚 𝐬𝐚 𝐋𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐡𝐢𝐲𝐚:

✠ Ang 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐠 nagpadayag sa kagawasan nga atong nadawat isip mga anak sa Dios pinaagi kang Kristo nga Nabanhaw, nga nagpalingkawas kanato gikan sa pagkaulipon sa sala (𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘸𝘢 𝘢𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘳𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘪𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘌𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵, 2004, 𝘯𝘰. 29).

✠ Ang 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐤𝐨𝐝 nagpadayag sa pagkaabli sa atong kasingkasing ug pagkaandam sa pagpaminaw sa pulong ni Jesus, sama kang Maria nga milingkod sa tiilan ni Jesus aron maminaw Kaniya (𝘐𝘣𝘪𝘥.).

✠ Ang 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐥𝐮𝐡𝐨𝐝 𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐛𝐨 nagpadayag sa atong pagpaubos atubangan sa Gamhanang Ginoo. Kini nagpakita sa atong dakong pagtahod ug pagsimba kaniya (𝘐𝘣𝘪𝘥.). Dugang pa niana, ang GIRM naghisgot nga ang 𝐩𝐚𝐠𝐲𝐮𝐤𝐛𝐨 nagpakita sa pagtahod ug pagpasidungog sa Dios o tawo o sa mga timaan nga nagrepresentar kanila (𝘤𝘧. 𝘎𝘐𝘙𝘔 275).

✠ Ang 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐮𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 nagpadayag sa pagsimba ug pagdayeg sa Dios (𝘤𝘧. 𝘎𝘐𝘙𝘔 274).

3. 𝐀𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐚 𝐮𝐬𝐚 𝐤𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐚 𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐡𝐢𝐮𝐬𝐚

Sa Liturhiya, dili kita naglihok sumala lamang sa atong gusto. Ang atong komon nga postura usa ka timaan sa panaghiusa sa komunidad nga nagtigom alang sa Santos nga Liturhiya (𝘤𝘧. 𝘎𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘐𝘯𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘭 42).

𝐏𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐧:

𝑲𝒖𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒏 𝒎𝒐𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒐𝒈 𝒔𝒂 𝒅𝒊𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝒎𝒂𝒈𝒔𝒖𝒈𝒐𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑬𝒃𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒚𝒐, 𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒑𝒂𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝒏𝒈𝒂 𝒖𝒔𝒂 𝒌𝒊𝒕𝒂 𝒌𝒂 𝒌𝒂𝒕𝒂𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒏𝒈𝒂 𝒏𝒂𝒈𝒕𝒂𝒉𝒐𝒅 𝒖𝒈 𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒘 𝒔𝒂 𝑷𝒖𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒔𝒂 𝑫𝒊𝒐𝒔 (𝘤𝘧. 𝘎𝘐𝘙𝘔 43).

𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐏𝐈𝐔𝐒 𝐗, 𝐏𝐎𝐏𝐄

On June 2, 1835, Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto saw the light of earth at Riesi, Province of Treviso, in Venice; on August 20, 1914, he saw the light of heaven; and on May 29, 1954, he who had become the two hundred fifty-ninth pope was canonized SAINT PIUS X.

Two of the most outstanding accomplishments of this saintly Pope were the inauguration of the liturgical renewal and the restoration of frequent communion from childhood. He also waged an unwavering war against the heresy and evils of Modernism, gave great impetus to biblical studies, and brought about the codification of Canon Law. His overriding concern was “to renew all things in Christ.”

Above all, his holiness shone forth conspicuously. From Saint Pius X we learn again that “the folly of the Cross”, simplicity of life, and humility of heart are still the highest wisdom and the indispensable conditions of a perfect Christian life, for they are the very source of all apostolic fruitfulness.

His last will and testament bears the striking sentence: “I was born poor, I have lived in poverty, and I wish to die poor.”

The hand of the LORD came upon me,
and led me out in the Spirit of the LORD
and set me in the center of the plain,
which was now filled with bones.
He made me walk among the bones in every direction
so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain.
How dry they were!
He asked me:
Son of man, can these bones come to life?
I answered, “Lord GOD, you alone know that.”
Then he said to me:
Prophesy over these bones, and say to them:
Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones:
See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life.
I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you,
cover you with skin, and put spirit in you
so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD.
I prophesied as I had been told,
and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise;
it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone.
I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them,
and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them.
Then the LORD said to me:
Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man,
and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD:
From the four winds come, O spirit,
and breathe into these slain that they may come to life.
I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them;
they came alive and stood upright, a vast army.
Then he said to me:
Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel.
They have been saying,
“Our bones are dried up,
our hope is lost, and we are cut off.”
Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD:
O my people, I will open your graves
and have you rise from them,
and bring you back to the land of Israel.
Then you shall know that I am the LORD,
when I open your graves and have you rise from them,
O my people!
I will put my spirit in you that you may live,
and I will settle you upon your land;
thus you shall know that I am the LORD.
I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees,
they gathered together, and one of them,
a scholar of the law, tested him by asking,
“Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?”
He said to him,
“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart,
with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.”

𝐒𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐓 𝐁𝐄𝐑𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐃 𝐎𝐅 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐈𝐑𝐕𝐀𝐔𝐗

SAINT BERNARD was born at the castle of Fontaines, in Burgundy. The grace of his person and the vigor of his intellect filled his parents with the highest hopes, and the world lay bright and smiling before him when he renounced it forever and joined the monks at Cîteaux. All his brothers followed Bernard to Cîteaux except Nivard, the youngest, who was left to stay with his father in his old age. “You will now be heir of everything,” they said to him, as they departed. “Yes,” said the boy; “you leave me earth, and keep heaven for yourselves; do you call that fair?” And he too left the world. At length their aged father came to exchange wealth and honor for the poverty of a monk of Clairvaux. One only sister remained behind; she was married, and loved the world and its pleasures. Magnificently dressed, she visited Bernard; he refused to see her, and only at last consented to do so, not as her brother, but as the minister of Christ. The words he then spoke moved her so much that, two years later, she retired to a convent with her husband’s consent, and died in the reputation of sanctity. Bernard’s holy example attracted so many novices that other monasteries were erected, and our Saint was appointed abbot of that of Clairvaux. Unsparing with himself, he at first expected too much of his brethren, who were disheartened at his severity; but soon perceiving his error, he led them forward, by the sweetness of his correction and the mildness of his rule, to wonderful perfection. In spite of his desire to lie hid, the fame of his sanctity spread far and wide, and many churches asked for him as their Bishop. Through the help of Pope Eugenius III, his former subject, he escaped this dignity; yet his retirement was continually invaded: the poor and the weak sought his protection; bishops, kings, and popes applied to him for advice; and at length Eugenius himself charged him to preach the second crusade. By his fervor, eloquence, and miracles Bernard kindled the enthusiasm of Christendom, and two splendid armies were dispatched. Their defeat was only due, said the Saint, to their own sins. Bernard died in 1153. His most precious writings have earned for him the titles of the last of the Fathers and a Doctor of Holy Church.

Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and the elders of the people in parables, saying,
“The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king
who gave a wedding feast for his son.
He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast,
but they refused to come.
A second time he sent other servants, saying,
‘Tell those invited: “Behold, I have prepared my banquet,
my calves and fattened cattle are killed,
and everything is ready; come to the feast.”’
Some ignored the invitation and went away,
one to his farm, another to his business.
The rest laid hold of his servants,
mistreated them, and killed them.
The king was enraged and sent his troops,
destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.
Then he said to his servants, ‘The feast is ready,
but those who were invited were not worthy to come.
Go out, therefore, into the main roads
and invite to the feast whomever you find.’
The servants went out into the streets
and gathered all they found, bad and good alike,
and the hall was filled with guests.
But when the king came in to meet the guests
he saw a man there not dressed in a wedding garment.
He said to him, ‘My friend, how is it
that you came in here without a wedding garment?’
But he was reduced to silence.
Then the king said to his attendants, ‘Bind his hands and feet,
and cast him into the darkness outside,
where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.’
Many are invited, but few are chosen.”
