“From Weeping to Witnessing”

Text: Gospel of John 20:11–18

Introduction

There are moments in life when pain blinds us from seeing what God is doing. Mary Magdalene stood outside the tomb crying. She thought everything was over. The Savior she loved had died, and now even His body was gone. But in the middle of her sorrow, Jesus appeared alive.

This passage reminds us that Jesus meets broken people personally and turns mourners into messengers.

I. Mary Stayed Near Jesus Even in Sorrow

John 20:11 – “Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying…”

Mary did not run away from Jesus after the crucifixion. Even in pain, she stayed near the tomb.

Sometimes grief can either pull us away from God or push us closer to Him. Mary chose to stay.

Lesson:

Faithfulness during sorrow prepares us to experience God’s presence.

Supporting Verses

* Psalm 34:18 – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.”
* James 4:8 – “Come near to God and He will come near to you.”

Application

When life becomes painful, do not abandon prayer, worship, or faith. Stay close to Jesus even when you do not understand.

II. Tears Can Blind Us from Seeing God’s Work

John 20:14-15 – Mary saw Jesus but did not recognize Him.

Her grief was so heavy that she could not recognize the risen Lord standing right in front of her.

Sometimes we are the same:

* We focus so much on loss that we miss God’s presence.
* We focus on problems instead of promises.

Lesson:

God may already be working even when we cannot yet see clearly.

Supporting Verses

* Isaiah 43:19 – “See, I am doing a new thing!”
* Romans 8:28 – God works all things for good.

Illustration

Like the sunrise hidden by thick clouds, the sun is still there even when unseen. Jesus was present beside Mary even in her tears.

III. Jesus Knows Us Personally

John 20:16 – Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

Everything changed when Jesus called her by name.

One word from Jesus removed fear, confusion, and sorrow.

Lesson:

Jesus is not distant. He knows your name, your pain, and your story.

Supporting Verses

* Isaiah 43:1 – “I have called you by name; you are mine.”
* Gospel of John 10:3 – “He calls his own sheep by name.”

Application

You may feel forgotten by people, but never by Christ.

IV. The Risen Jesus Turns Followers into Witnesses

John 20:17-18 – Mary went and told the disciples, “I have seen the Lord!”

The woman who came crying left rejoicing and proclaiming the resurrection.

Jesus transformed her from:

* mourning → mission
* sorrow → testimony
* brokenness → boldness

Lesson:

An encounter with the risen Christ changes a person completely.

Supporting Verses

* 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.”
* Matthew 28:19 – “Go and make disciples…”

Application

God did not save us just to sit silently. He calls us to share the good news with others.

Conclusion

Mary Magdalene came to the tomb full of sorrow, but she left with joy because Jesus was alive.

The resurrection changes everything:

* Tears become hope.
* Fear becomes faith.
* Broken hearts become powerful witnesses.

Today, Jesus still calls people by name. He still meets the hurting. He still transforms lives.

Final Challenge

Are you standing in sorrow today?
Listen carefully — the risen Jesus may already be near, calling your name.

Because when you truly meet Jesus, you will never remain the same.

“The Empty Tomb: From Fear to Faith”

Text: Gospel of John 20:1–10

Introduction

The resurrection of Jesus is the foundation of the Christian faith. In John 20:1–10, we see confusion, fear, running, searching, and finally believing. The empty tomb became proof that death could not hold Jesus Christ.

Many people today are also searching for hope, peace, and answers. Just like Mary, Peter, and John, we are invited to come and see the truth of the risen Savior.

Scripture Background

Early on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed. She ran to tell Peter and John. The two disciples hurried to the tomb and discovered that Jesus’ body was gone, but the grave clothes were left behind neatly folded. John saw and believed.

Sermon Points

1. The Empty Tomb Brings Hope

Mary Magdalene came while it was still dark.

Darkness in the Bible often represents fear, sorrow, and confusion. Mary came with a broken heart because Jesus had died. But she discovered something unexpected—the tomb was empty.

Sometimes we also experience dark moments:

* problems in life
* sickness
* disappointments
* unanswered prayers

But the resurrection reminds us that darkness is not the end.

Supporting Verse

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”
— Psalm 30:5

Jesus can turn mourning into joy.

2. Real Faith Seeks Jesus

When Mary saw the stone removed, she immediately ran to Peter and John. Then the two disciples also ran to the tomb.

Their running showed urgency and desire to know the truth.

Faith is not passive. True faith seeks Jesus passionately.

Many people are busy seeking money, success, or comfort, but the greatest pursuit is Christ Himself.

Supporting Verse

“You will seek Me and find Me when you seek Me with all your heart.”
— Jeremiah 29:13

3. The Grave Clothes Proved the Resurrection

When Peter entered the tomb, he saw the linen cloth lying there. The face cloth was folded separately.

If someone had stolen the body, they would not have carefully folded the cloths. This showed order, peace, and victory.

Jesus did not escape death—He conquered it.

Supporting Verse

“He is not here: for He is risen.”
— Gospel of Matthew 28:6

The resurrection proves:

* Jesus is truly the Son of God
* sin was defeated
* death has no final victory

4. Seeing Leads to Believing

John 20:8 says:

“He saw and believed.”

John saw the evidence and believed in the resurrection.

God still gives evidence today:

* changed lives
* answered prayers
* transformed hearts
* the truth of Scripture

Faith is not blind; it is trusting the truth of God.

Supporting Verse

“Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
— Epistle to the Romans 10:17

Application

Ask yourself:

* Have I truly believed in the risen Christ?
* Am I still living in fear and spiritual darkness?
* Do I seek Jesus daily?
* Has the resurrection changed my life?

Because Jesus lives:

* we have hope
* we have forgiveness
* we have eternal life
* we can overcome fear

Illustration

A seed buried in the ground looks dead, but after some time new life comes out of it. In the same way, Jesus was buried, but He rose again in victory and glory.

The tomb was not the end—it was the beginning of new life.

Conclusion

The empty tomb is Heaven’s declaration that Jesus is alive. The resurrection changes everything.

The disciples came to the tomb confused and afraid, but they left with growing faith.

Today, Jesus still calls people from fear to faith, from darkness to light, and from death to life.

Closing Challenge

Do not stay outside the tomb wondering. Come and believe in the risen Savior.

Because the tomb is empty, our hearts can be full of hope.

Title: “Faith That Came Out in the Open”

The Gospel of John 19:38–42 tells us about two men, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who honored Jesus after His death. While many disciples were afraid and hiding, these two men showed courage and love for Christ.

Scripture Text

John 19:38-42

“Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus…”

Introduction

Many people say they believe in Jesus, but true faith is revealed when following Him becomes difficult. Joseph and Nicodemus were once secret followers, but at the death of Jesus, they openly showed their devotion.

Sometimes God uses painful moments to reveal genuine faith.

1. True Faith Requires Courage

Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple because he feared the Jewish leaders. But after Jesus died, he gathered courage and asked Pilate for the body of Jesus.

Even though Jesus appeared defeated on the cross, Joseph still honored Him.

Supporting Verse

“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God goes with you.” — Deuteronomy 31:6

Lesson

Real faith is not only shown during blessings and victories. Faith is proven when it costs something.

Many people follow Jesus when life is easy, but disappear when trials come. Joseph showed courage when others were silent.

Application

* Are we only Christians in public when it is convenient?
* Can we stand for Jesus even when others reject Him?

2. Love for Jesus Leads to Sacrifice

Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes for Jesus’ burial. These spices were expensive and used to honor kings.

Nicodemus once came to Jesus at night secretly (John 3), but now he came openly.

Supporting Verse

“Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

Lesson

Love for Jesus changes our priorities.
When we truly love Christ, we willingly give our time, resources, and lives for Him.

Application

* What are we willing to give for Jesus?
* Is our devotion visible in our actions?

3. Even in Death, God’s Plan Was Being Fulfilled

Jesus was buried in a new tomb in a garden. This fulfilled prophecy and prepared the way for the resurrection.

What looked like the end was actually the beginning of victory.

Supporting Verse

“He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death.” — Isaiah 53:9

Joseph was a rich man, and Jesus being buried in his tomb fulfilled prophecy perfectly.

Lesson

God is always in control, even in dark moments.

The cross was not a defeat; it was part of God’s redemption plan.

Application

* Sometimes our painful seasons are preparing us for resurrection moments.
* Trust God even when you do not understand the situation.

Illustration

A seed must first be buried in the ground before it can grow into new life.
Jesus was buried in the tomb, but His burial was not the end—it prepared the way for resurrection and salvation.

Sometimes God buries things in our lives not to destroy us, but to bring new life.

Conclusion

Joseph and Nicodemus teach us:

* Courage to stand for Jesus
* Love that sacrifices
* Faith that trusts God’s plan

When others walked away, they stepped forward.

The death of Jesus did not end hope—it opened the door for salvation and resurrection.

Final Challenge

Will you remain a secret follower, or will you openly live for Christ?

Now is the time to:

* Stand boldly for Jesus
* Serve Him with love
* Trust His plan even in difficult seasons

“The Finished Sacrifice”

Text: Gospel of John 19:31–37

Introduction

The crucifixion of Jesus was not an accident. Every detail happened according to the will and plan of God. In John 19:31–37, we see that even after Jesus died, God’s prophecy continued to be fulfilled. Jesus is the perfect Lamb of God who gave His life for our salvation.

Scripture Focus

The Jewish leaders asked Pilate to break the legs of those crucified because the Sabbath was near. The soldiers broke the legs of the two criminals, but when they came to Jesus, they saw that He was already dead. Instead, one soldier pierced His side with a spear, and blood and water came out.

John testified to this so that people would believe in Jesus.

Sermon Title:

“Jesus: The Perfect Sacrifice”

1. Jesus Gave His Life Completely

The soldiers did not break Jesus’ legs because He was already dead.

Jesus willingly gave His life. No one forced Him.

“It is finished.” — John 19:30

Jesus completed the work of salvation on the cross.

Supporting Verses

* Isaiah 53:5 – “By His wounds we are healed.”
* John 10:18 – Jesus said no one takes His life from Him.

Application

Jesus surrendered everything for us. We should also surrender our lives fully to Him.

2. Jesus Fulfilled Prophecy Perfectly

The Bible says:

“Not one of His bones will be broken.”

This fulfilled the prophecy about the Passover lamb.

Jesus is the true Lamb of God.

Supporting Verses

* Exodus 12:46 – The Passover lamb’s bones must not be broken.
* Psalms 34:20 – “He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.”
* John 1:29 – “Behold the Lamb of God.”

Illustration

In the Old Testament, lambs were sacrificed temporarily for sin. But Jesus became the final and perfect sacrifice forever.

Application

We can trust God because His Word never fails. Every prophecy about Jesus was fulfilled exactly.

3. The Blood and Water Speak of Salvation

When the soldier pierced Jesus’ side, blood and water flowed out.

Many believe:

* The blood speaks of forgiveness and cleansing from sin.
* The water speaks of spiritual life and cleansing.

Supporting Verses

* 1 John 1:7 – “The blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin.”
* Ephesians 5:26 – Cleansing through the washing with water by the Word.

Application

Only Jesus can truly cleanse the human heart. Religion cannot save us; only the blood of Christ can.

4. John Shared This Testimony So People Would Believe

John said:

“He who saw it has testified…”

John wanted people to know the cross was real and salvation is true.

Christianity is built on the truth of what Jesus actually did.

Supporting Verse

* Romans 10:9 – If you confess and believe, you will be saved.

Application

God calls us not only to know about Jesus, but to believe in Him personally.

Conclusion

At the cross, Jesus became the perfect sacrifice for our sins.
His bones were not broken.
His side was pierced.
His blood was shed.
Every detail fulfilled God’s plan.

The cross is the greatest proof of God’s love.

Final Challenge

* Have you truly trusted Jesus as your Savior?
* Are you living a surrendered life for Him?
* Do you still carry guilt that only Jesus can wash away?

Today, come to the cross and remember:
Jesus gave everything so we could have eternal life.

Closing Verse

* Hebrews 9:28 – “Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many.”

Sermon: “It Is Finished”

Text: Gospel of John

Introduction

The cross was not an accident. Jesus was not defeated by His enemies. Every pain, every wound, and every word spoken on the cross fulfilled the plan of God for our salvation. In John 19:28-30, we hear the final words of Jesus before He gave up His spirit: “It is finished.” These words carry power, hope, and victory for every believer.

1. Jesus Fulfilled the Scriptures

“Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished…” (John 19:28)

Even while suffering on the cross, Jesus remembered the will of the Father and fulfilled the Scriptures completely. Nothing in God’s plan failed.

Jesus said,

“I thirst.”

This fulfilled prophecy from the Old Testament.

Supporting Verse

“They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.” — Book of Psalms

Lesson

Jesus fulfilled every promise of God perfectly. We can trust Him because He never fails.

Application

Sometimes we do not understand God’s timing, but just as God’s plan was fulfilled in Christ, God’s purpose for our lives will also be accomplished if we continue to trust Him.

2. Jesus Experienced Suffering for Us

“They filled a sponge with sour wine…” (John 19:29)

Jesus experienced extreme thirst, pain, rejection, and suffering. The Son of God became fully human and endured suffering for our salvation.

Supporting Verse

“Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.” — Book of Isaiah

Lesson

Jesus understands our pain because He suffered too. When we are weak, hurting, or discouraged, we can come to Him.

Application

Do not think that God is far away from your suffering. Jesus knows your tears, your struggles, and your burdens.

3. “It Is Finished” — The Work of Salvation Was Complete

“When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, ‘It is finished!’” (John 19:30)

The phrase “It is finished” means the debt of sin was fully paid. Jesus completed the work the Father gave Him to do.

Sin no longer has the final victory because Jesus already paid the price on the cross.

Supporting Verses

“For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.” — Epistle to the Hebrews

“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” — Epistle to the Romans

Lesson

Salvation is not earned by good works. Jesus already completed the work of redemption.

Application

Stop trying to save yourself through religion, pride, or human effort. Trust fully in the finished work of Christ.

4. Jesus Voluntarily Gave His Life

“And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” (John 19:30)

Jesus was not forced to die. He willingly gave His life out of love for us.

Supporting Verse

“No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself.” — Gospel of John

Lesson

The cross is the greatest picture of God’s love.

Application

If Jesus gave His life for us, we should also surrender our lives to Him completely.

Conclusion

The cross looked like defeat, but it was actually victory. When Jesus said, “It is finished,” He defeated sin, fulfilled prophecy, and opened the way for salvation.

Today, because of Jesus:

* Our sins can be forgiven.
* Our relationship with God can be restored.
* We can have eternal life.

The question is: Will we trust the finished work of Christ?

Closing Challenge

Do not leave the cross unchanged. Jesus finished His work for you — now surrender your heart to Him.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Gospel of Matthew

Title: “Love at the Cross”

Text:

“And carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull…” — John 19:17

Introduction

The cross is the greatest picture of God’s love for humanity. In John 19:17–27, we see Jesus suffering, rejected, and crucified. Yet even in His pain, Jesus showed love, forgiveness, and care.

This passage reminds us that the cross is not only a place of suffering — it is also a place of salvation, sacrifice, and love.

I. Jesus Carried the Cross for Us (vv. 17–18)

Jesus carried His own cross to Golgotha, the place of crucifixion. He was innocent, yet He willingly suffered for sinners.

Supporting Verses

* Isaiah 53:5 — “He was wounded for our transgressions…”
* 1 Peter 2:24 — “He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross.”

Lesson

Jesus did not carry the cross because He was guilty. He carried it because we were guilty.

The weight of the cross represents the weight of our sin. Christ took our punishment upon Himself.

Application

* Trust in the sacrifice of Jesus.
* Stop carrying the burden of sin alone.
* Surrender your life to Christ.

II. Jesus Was Rejected by Men but Accepted by the Father (vv. 19–22)

Pilate wrote the title:
“Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”

The religious leaders rejected this title, but the truth could not be changed. Jesus truly is King.

Supporting Verses

* Philippians 2:9–11 — Every knee shall bow before Jesus.
* John 1:11 — “He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”

Lesson

People may reject Jesus, but rejection does not change His identity.

Application

* Do not be ashamed to follow Christ.
* Stand for truth even when others reject it.
* Recognize Jesus as Lord and King.

III. Jesus Fulfilled the Scriptures (vv. 23–24)

The soldiers divided His garments and cast lots for His clothing. This fulfilled prophecy.

Supporting Verse

* Psalms 22:18 — “They divide my garments among them…”

Lesson

God’s Word is always true. Even during suffering, God’s plan was being fulfilled.

Application

* Trust God even when life is painful.
* Remember that God is in control.
* His promises never fail.

IV. Jesus Showed Love Even While Suffering (vv. 25–27)

While hanging on the cross, Jesus saw His mother Mary and the disciple John. Even in extreme pain, He cared for them.

Jesus said:

“Woman, behold your son.”
“Behold your mother.”

Supporting Verses

* 1 John 4:19 — “We love because He first loved us.”
* Ephesians 5:2 — “Walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us.”

Lesson

The love of Jesus is compassionate and sacrificial.

At the cross, Jesus was not thinking only about Himself — He was thinking about others.

Application

* Care for your family and others.
* Show love even during hardship.
* Follow the example of Christ’s compassion.

Conclusion

John 19:17–27 teaches us that:

* Jesus carried the cross for our sins.
* Jesus remained King despite rejection.
* Jesus fulfilled God’s promises.
* Jesus demonstrated perfect love at the cross.

The cross is the greatest proof that God loves us.

Final Challenge

Will you only admire the cross, or will you surrender your life to the One who died on it?

Title: “Choosing Barabbas Instead of Jesus”

Scripture

“But you have a custom that I release to you one prisoner at the time of the Passover. Do you want me to release ‘the king of the Jews’?”
They shouted back, “No, not him! Give us Barabbas!” Now Barabbas had taken part in an uprising.
— John 18:39-40 (NIV)

Introduction

Life is full of choices. Every day we choose whom we will follow, trust, and obey. In this passage, the crowd had a choice between Jesus and Barabbas. One was innocent, holy, and full of truth. The other was a rebel and criminal. Yet the people rejected Jesus and chose Barabbas.

Even today, many people still reject Christ and choose the things of the world instead.

I. Jesus Was Innocent, Yet Rejected

Pilate could not find guilt in Jesus, but the crowd still refused Him.

Jesus came:

* to save sinners,
* to bring truth,
* to give eternal life.

Yet the people cried, “Not Him!”

Many people today also reject Jesus because:

* they love sin,
* they follow the crowd,
* they want worldly pleasures more than God.

Supporting Verse

“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
— Gospel of John

Lesson

Rejecting Jesus is rejecting the only Savior who can give eternal life.

II. Barabbas Represents Sinful Humanity

Barabbas was a criminal deserving punishment. Surprisingly, he was released while Jesus took the path to the cross.

This is a picture of the Gospel:

* the guilty set free,
* the innocent punished.

Jesus took our place.

Supporting Verse

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
— Epistle to the Romans

Illustration

Imagine a guilty prisoner standing before the judge expecting punishment. Suddenly, another innocent man steps forward and says, “I will take his place.” That is exactly what Jesus did for us.

III. Every Person Must Choose

The crowd made their decision loudly:

“Give us Barabbas!”

Today people still choose:

* sin over holiness,
* pleasure over obedience,
* self over Christ.

But Joshua declared:

“Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.”
— Book of Joshua

Question

Who are you choosing today?

* Jesus?
* or the world?

There is no neutral ground.

IV. Jesus Still Offers Grace

Even though people rejected Him, Jesus still went to the cross willingly. His love did not stop because of rejection.

Supporting Verse

“Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.”
— Gospel of Luke

This shows:

* His mercy,
* His patience,
* His amazing love.

No matter how far a person has gone, Jesus is still willing to forgive and save.

Application

Ask yourself:

1. Am I truly choosing Jesus daily?
2. Are there worldly things I value more than Christ?
3. Have I accepted the sacrifice Jesus made for me?

True Christianity is not just knowing about Jesus; it is choosing Him above everything else.

Conclusion

The crowd chose Barabbas and rejected Jesus. It was one of the saddest choices in history. Yet Jesus still went to the cross because of His love for sinners.

Today, the same choice is before us:

* Will we choose Christ,
* or reject Him for the temporary things of this world?

Choose Jesus while there is still time

Title: “Behold the King”

Scripture Focus

John 19:1-16 tells the story of Jesus being mocked, beaten, rejected, and condemned to crucifixion. Though innocent, He willingly suffered for the salvation of humanity.

Introduction

Many people want a king who is powerful, rich, and victorious in the eyes of the world. But Jesus revealed a different kind of King:

* humble,
* suffering,
* loving,
* sacrificial.

In this passage, Jesus was crowned with thorns instead of gold, mocked instead of honored, and rejected instead of accepted. Yet through His suffering, God’s plan of salvation was fulfilled.

I. Jesus Suffered for Our Sins

Pilate had Jesus flogged and beaten. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and placed it on His head.

Supporting Verse

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities.”
— Book of Isaiah

Jesus suffered physically and emotionally:

* mocked by soldiers,
* abandoned by many,
* rejected by His own people.

He did not suffer because He was guilty. He suffered because we are guilty.

Lesson

Every wound of Jesus reminds us how serious sin is and how great His love is.

II. “Behold the Man!”

Pilate presented Jesus to the crowd saying:

“Behold the man!” (John 19:5)

Jesus stood there:

* bruised,
* bleeding,
* wearing a crown of thorns.

Yet even in suffering, Jesus showed humility and strength.

Illustration

Sometimes people judge strength by outward appearance. But true strength is seen in endurance, obedience, and love. Jesus remained faithful even while suffering unjustly.

Supporting Verse

“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth.”
— Book of Isaiah

III. The Crowd Rejected Their King

The chief priests shouted:

“Crucify him! Crucify him!”

Later they even declared:

“We have no king but Caesar.” (John 19:15)

The religious leaders rejected the true King because Jesus threatened their pride and authority.

Lesson

People still reject Jesus today because:

* they love sin,
* they want control of their own lives,
* they fear surrendering to God.

Supporting Verse

“He came unto his own, and his own received him not.”
— Gospel of John

IV. Jesus Is the True King

Though mocked as “King of the Jews,” Jesus truly is King:

* King of truth,
* King of peace,
* King of kings.

His kingdom is not built by force but by love and sacrifice.

Supporting Verse

“On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”
— Book of Revelation

Application

The question is not whether Jesus is King. The question is:

* Is He King over your life?

Practical Applications

1. Be thankful for Christ’s sacrifice.
2. Do not reject Jesus like the crowd did.
3. Remain faithful even during suffering.
4. Surrender your life fully to Christ the King.

Conclusion

In John 19:1-16, we see the suffering Savior and the rejected King. Jesus endured pain, humiliation, and rejection so that sinners could be saved.

The crowd shouted, “Crucify Him!”
But heaven declared, “This is the Lamb of God.”

Today we must decide:

* Will we reject Him,
* or will we bow before Him as King?
