1. What is Advent?
Advent is the first season of the liturgical year. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin 'adventus', meaning “coming” or “arrival.” It is a time of joyful expectation, hope, and spiritual preparation for the coming of Jesus Christ.
2. What are the “three comings” of Christ in Advent?
Advent prepares us to reflect on three comings:
• His coming in history – His birth in Bethlehem 2,000 years ago.
• His coming in mystery – His coming to us daily through the sacraments, the Word, prayer, and the people around us.
• His coming in majesty – His second coming at the end of time.
Advent reminds us: Christ has come, Christ comes now, and Christ will come again.
3. What is the spiritual focus of Advent?
Advent calls us to:
• Watchfulness – being spiritually awake.
• Repentance – turning away from sin.
• Hope – trusting in God’s promises.
• Preparation – making room in our hearts for Christ.
4. Why is the liturgical color purple (violet)?
Purple symbolizes penitence and preparation, similar to Lent, but with a more joyful tone. On the Third Sunday of Advent (Gaudete Sunday), the color is rose, symbolizing joy, because Christmas is near.
5. What is the Advent wreath?
The Advent wreath is a circular wreath with four candles:
• 3 purple
• 1 rose
Each candle represents a Sunday of Advent. The progressive lighting of candles symbolizes the growing light of Christ in a dark world.
The candles traditionally stand for:
1st Sunday: Hope
2nd Sunday: Peace
3rd Sunday: Joy (rose)
4th Sunday: Love
6. Why does Advent emphasize silence and waiting?
Our world is noisy and rushed. Advent teaches us the grace of waiting, slowing down, and listening to God.
It reminds us that God often speaks in silence, as He did to Mary and Joseph.
7. How do we prepare during Advent?
The Church invites us to:
• Go to Confession
• Deepen our prayer life
• Read Scripture daily
• Perform acts of charity
• Be reconciled with others
• Attend Mass faithfully
• Make small sacrifices to open space for God
8. Who are the main figures of Advent?
• Isaiah – the prophet of hope
• John the Baptist – the forerunner who cries, “Prepare the way of the Lord!”
• Mary – the model of waiting, faith, and surrender
• Joseph – the silent guardian of the Redeemer
9. What is the ultimate purpose of Advent?
Advent is not just preparing for Christmas Day.
It is preparing our hearts for a deeper encounter with Christ—not only at Bethlehem, but every day, and ultimately, for eternity.
