Saint Narcissus of Jerusalem

Saint Narcissus of Jerusalemโ€™s Story
Life in second- and third-century Jerusalem couldnโ€™t have been easy, but Saint Narcissus managed to live well beyond 100. Some even speculate he lived to 160.
Details of his life are sketchy, but there are many reports of his miracles. The miracle for which Narcissus is most remembered was turning water into oil for use in the church lamps on Holy Saturday when the deacons had forgotten to provide any.

We do know that Narcissus became bishop of Jerusalem in the late second century. He was known for his holiness, but there are hints that many people found him harsh and rigid in his efforts to impose Church discipline. One of his many detractors accused Narcissus of a serious crime at one point. Though the charges against him did not hold up, he used the occasion to retire from his role as bishop and live in solitude. His disappearance was so sudden and convincing that many people assumed he had actually died.

Several successors were appointed during his years in isolation. Finally, Narcissus reappeared in Jerusalem and was persuaded to resume his duties. By then he had reached an advanced age, so a younger bishop was brought in to assist him until his death.

St Narcissus, pray for us.

29 October โ€“ Saint Achahildis (Died c 970) Married Laywoman, Apostle of the poor, Miracle-worker, she built the Church in Wendelstein, Germany. Born in Luxembourg and died in c 970 of natural causes in Wendelstein. Also known as โ€“ Achatia, Lady Atzin, Atzia, Atza, Reinilda of Luxembourg.
Born into a noble family, she was the sister of Saint Cunรฉgundes. She married Thietmar and the couple were blessed with 5 children.
Achahildis was known for her charity towards the poor. She founded the Wendelstein Church south of Nuremberg in Germany where she is still venerated.
The legend says that having discovered that a servant had stolen and killed geese, she forgave her and brought the geese back to life, including the one that had been cooked. During one of pregnancies, Achahildis developed an appetite for cherries in winter and a cherry tree in her garden bore ripe fruit to her great delight. The cherry tree was considered a tree of paradise . Based on these miracles that have been passed down, Achahildis is depicted with either three geese or a goose leg and a cherry tree with ripe red fruit.
Achahildis died in c 970 and was interred at the Church in Wendelstein, Germany that she had founded. Her tomb re-discovered in 1447 and many miracles, especially of children, were reported at her tomb. Today there is a Chapel dedicated to her in Wendelstein.

October 29 || SAINT ABRAHAM KIDUNAIA

St. Abraham Kidunaia was born to a wealthy family during the third century. After receiving an excellent education, Abraham was encouraged to get married. He followed the wishes of his parents, but after the wedding ceremony, he told his bride his desire to remain a virgin and dedicate his life to God. His bride accepted this resolution and Abraham retired to a hermitage near Edessa, a city near Mesopotamia.

Ten years after he retreated from the world, his parents died and left a great amount of wealth to Abraham. As soon as he was aware of this, he asked a friend to distribute the sum to charitable causes. Through actions like this and his deep prayer life, Abraham became known throughout the region as a holy man and many came to him for guidance.

His reputation even came to the ears of the bishop, and when Edessa became poisoned with sin and idolatry, Abraham was ordained and asked to go to the city preaching reform. Abraham was greatly distressed by this, but obeyed the wishes of the bishop.
***
When Abraham arrived in Edessa, none of the residents would listen to his words. Eventually, through constant prayer, Abraham converted them. Once the conversions took place, Abraham returned to his hermitage to continue his life of solitary prayer.
Around the year 360 Abraham died after a life of faithful service to God.
Happy feast Okoh Kenneth Abraham

October 28 | Feast of Saint Jude Thaddeus

St. Jude is the Patron Saint of Hope and impossible causes and one of Jesusโ€™ original twelve Apostles. He preached the Gospel with great passion, often in the most difficult circumstances. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, he made profound differences in people's lives as he offered them the Word of God. The Gospel tells us that St. Jude was a brother of St. James the Less, also one of the Apostles. They are described in the Gospel of Matthew as the "brethren" of Jesus, probably cousins.
St. Jude is traditionally depicted carrying the image of Jesus in his hand. This recalls one of his miracles during his work spreading the Word of God. King Abagar of Edessa asked Jesus to cure him of leprosy and sent an artist to bring him a drawing of Jesus. Impressed with Abagar's great faith, Jesus pressed His face on a cloth, leaving the image of His face on it. He gave the cloth to St. Jude, who took the image to Abagar and cured him.
After the death and resurrection of Jesus, St. Jude traveled throughout Mesopotamia, Libya, and Persia with St. Simon preaching and building up the foundations of the early Church. He died a martyr's death for his unwavering faith. His body was later brought to Rome and placed in a crypt under St. Peter's Basilica.
St. Jude Thaddeus, pray for us.

Saint Simโ€™on the Apostle
Apostle and Martyr
Died: 1st century

St. Simon was one of the original twelve apostles of Jesus. To distinguish him from Simon Peter, he is often referred to as the โ€œKananaiosโ€ or the โ€œZealot.โ€ It is believed that he belonged to a group which rallied to expel the Romans from Palestine. Nothing else about him is mentioned in the Bible. Tradition says that he suffered martyrdom with St. Jude. He was killed by being sawn in half. He is the patron saint of lumberjacks.

October 28 : SAINT JUAN ALCOBER FIGUERA

Saint Juan Alcober Figuera
Dominican priest and missionary to China. Due to transport trouble, he was marooned in Lorca
for a while, where he became a popular preacher.
Sailed to Manila in the Philippines in
1726, and reached China in 1728.
Worked sixteen years in the Fo-kien province.
Posing as a water seller so he could move around the city, he still had to do his ministry in secret;
he once had to be smuggled into a house in a dying man's coffin in order to administer
Last Rites.
To escape detection, he once climbed into a tree; realizing he would need to spend the night there, he began saying his evening prayers;
he was joined in prayer by his friend Blessed Francis Serrano who was hiding in the same tree.
In 1746, one of his flock received a vision of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The visionary appeared so beatific in death that a crowd gathered to see her body;
the press of visitors prevented John from making his usual quick escape, and he was arrested. He, Francis Serrano and Father Francis Diaz were tortured for the location of Bishop Pere Sans-Jorda and Father Joachim Royo, who were known to be in the province;
these two surrendered to end the torture of their brothers.
Martyred with
Saint Peter Sanz, Blessed Francis Serrano, and other Dominicans.
Died
โ€ข strangled to death on 25 October 1748 in Fu-tsheu prison, Fo-kien province, China
โ€ข even the executioners noted that the faces of the victims looked peaceful and radiant
Beatified
14 May 1893 by Pope Leo XIII
Canonized
1 October 2000 by Pope John Paul II
