CHAPTER 1, Paragraph 3, Summarium Fidei Christianae Filipinas

This paragraph rightly articulates the foundational Reformed and Protestant position regarding the canon of Holy Scripture (2 Timothy 3:16–17)! The books of the Apocrypha (or Deuterocanon) were never included in the Hebrew canon entrusted to the Jewish people (Romans 3:2), nor were they ever quoted as authoritative, inspired Scripture by our Lord Jesus Christ or His apostles (Luke 24:44)!

While these writings do provide valuable historical and cultural context regarding the intertestamental periodβ€”much like the historical accounts of Josephusβ€”they lack the divine marks of inspiration, contain theological errors at variance with the rest of the canon, and cannot serve as a rule of faith (Isaiah 8:20, Galatians 1:8).

We plead with Roman Catholics to build their faith entirely upon the unshakeable, fully inspired Word of God, which alone possesses supreme, infallible divine authority!

SOLA SCRIPTURA!

β€œThe Holy Scripture is the only adequate, reliable, and infallible guide for all knowledge essential to salvation, as well as for faith and obedience. While the natural world and God's work in creation and in governing the world do reveal enough of His goodness, wisdom, and power to leave humanity without excuse, they are not enough to provide the knowledge of God and His will that is necessary for salvation. Therefore, it pleased the Lord at various times and in different ways to reveal Himself and declare His will to His church. Later, to better preserve and spread the truth, and to further strengthen and comfort the church against the corrupting influence of human nature, the malice of Satan, and the world, He committed His complete revelation to writing. This makes the Holy Scriptures absolutely essential, as God's previous methods of revealing His will to His people have now ceased.”

This is a most magnificent and necessary summary of divine truth, standing squarely in the great tradition of the historic Reformed confessions! It rightly reminds us that while God’s glory shines in the natural world, general revelation can only condemn the sinnerβ€”it can never save him; for salvation requires the special, gracious self-revelation of Almighty God through His written Word.

Notice how the wisdom of God is displayed here: He committed His truth to the Holy Scriptures precisely to safeguard His church against the shifting fads of human philosophy, the corruption of our own deceitful hearts, and the cunning deceptions of the devil. To depart from this absolute, sole sufficiency of Holy Scripture is to invite spiritual ruin, but to stand firmly upon it is to possess an unshakable foundation for faith, obedience, and the eternal salvation of the soul.
