The Church grants the Portiuncula Indulgence, or the Pardon of Assisi — a Plenary Indulgence obtained by St. Francis in 1216 for the remission of temporal punishment due to sins.

It may be gained from noon of August 1st to midnight of August 2nd in any parish church or Franciscan church, and may be applied for oneself or for a departed loved one.

To gain the indulgence, one must:

1) receive Sacramental Confession within eight days (before or after);
2) participate in Holy Mass and receive Holy Communion;
3) visit a parish church or a Franciscan church and recite the Creed and the Our Father; and
4) pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.

With complete detachment from all sin it is plenary; otherwise, it is partial. May we all avail ourselves of this grace of mercy.

Saints Louis and Zélie Martin:
Saints of everyday marriage
July 12

Louis and Zélie Martin were a 19th-century French couple who showed that holiness is possible in ordinary family life. Both first wanted to enter religious life, but God led them to marriage instead. They wed in Alençon in 1858. Louis was a watchmaker, Zélie ran a lace business from home, and together they raised nine children. Four died young, and the five surviving daughters all became nuns, including St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Their home was built on daily Mass, prayer, and charity, even through deep suffering: Zélie died of cancer at 45, and Louis later endured dementia. Pope Francis canonized them together on October 18, 2015, the first married couple to be declared saints in the same ceremony. Their feast day is July 12. They remind us that marriage, work, and raising kids can be a true path to heaven.

Louis and Zélie show us that marriage itself is a path to heaven. Your sacrament isn’t just for you two — it’s a visible sign of God’s love for the world. Holiness isn’t reserved for monasteries; it’s made in kitchens, workshops, and bedtime prayers.

you who in your life as a couple and as parents,
gave witness to an exemplary Christian life,

SAINT MARIA GORETTI
Feast Day: July 6

Maria Goretti was the daughter of a poor Italian tenant farmer. She had no opportunity to attend school and never learned to read or write. When Maria made her First Communion not long before her death, she was one of the older and less educated members of her class.

On a hot afternoon in July, Maria was sitting at the top of the stairs of her house, mending a shirt. She was not quite 12 years old, but physically mature. A cart stopped outside, and a neighbor, 18-year-old Alessandro, ran up the stairs. He seized her and pulled her into a bedroom. She struggled and tried to call for help.

“No, God does not wish it,” she cried out. “It is a sin. You would go to hell for it.”

Alessandro began striking her blindly with a long dagger.

Maria was taken to a hospital. Her last hours were marked by the simple compassion of the good: concern about where her mother would sleep, forgiveness of her murderer (she had been afraid of him but said nothing, lest she cause trouble for his family), and her devout reception of Viaticum, her last Holy Communion. She died about 24 hours after the attack.

Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison. For a long time, he was unrepentant and surly. One night, he had a dream or vision of Maria gathering flowers and offering them to him. His life changed. When he was released after 27 years, his first act was to beg the forgiveness of Maria’s mother.

Devotion to the young martyr grew, miracles were reported, and in less than half a century she was canonized. At her beatification in 1947, her 82-year-old mother, two sisters, and her brother appeared with Pope Pius XII on the balcony of St. Peter’s. Three years later, at Maria's canonization, a 66-year-old Alessandro Serenelli knelt among the quarter-million people and cried tears of joy.

O Saint Maria Goretti, who, strengthened by God’s grace,
did not hesitate even at the age of twelve
to shed your blood and sacrifice life itself
to defend your virginal purity,

look graciously on the unhappy human race,
which has strayed far from the path of eternal salvation.

Teach us all, and especially youth,
with what courage and promptitude
we should flee, for the love of Jesus, anything that could offend Him

Plenary Indulgence on June 29
Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul

On June 29, the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, the Church grants a Plenary Indulgence to the faithful who:

1. Prayerfully use an article of devotion
Requirement: The article must be blessed by the Supreme Pontiff or by any Bishop.

2. Recite a Profession of Faith
Use any legitimate formula, such as the Apostles’ Creed or Nicene Creed.

With the usual conditions:
Sacramental Confession, Eucharistic Communion, prayer for the Pope’s intentions, and complete detachment from sin.

Note:
If your article was blessed by a priest or deacon, you can still gain a Partial Indulgence whenever you use it devoutly.

§1 A plenary indulgence is granted to the faithful who, on the Solemnity of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, make prayerful use of an article of devotion, as defined by Norm 15, that has been blessed by the Supreme Pontiff or by any bishop, provided the faithful also make a Profession of Faith using any legitimate formula.

§2 A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who devoutly use such articles of devotion properly blessed by either a priest or a deacon.
