Our Bridge to God

Jesus is the bridge spanning a chasm between us and God that we could never cross on our own.

Related Scripture
Romans 3:23

John 14:1-6

In verse 6 of today’s passage, Jesus says, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” What a powerful and awe-inspiring statement!

When Jesus calls Himself “the way,” it’s likely that many people imagine a one-way street. They take it to mean there are lots of roads, but He is the only one that leads to the Father. This is true, but another image better captures the truth of our situation.

Think of Jesus not as a road but as a bridge. The apostle Paul tells us in Romans 3:23 that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Between us and God lies a great chasm we cannot cross on our own. No matter how hard we try in our own strength, we can’t close the distance.

There’s only one way to cross this wide chasm: a bridge. That’s what Jesus is for us. He stands in the gap, providing safe passage across the void and into the arms of our heavenly Father.

Spend some time today meditating on this image. Without God’s help, we are powerless to bridge the gap ourselves. Heaven would forever remain out of reach, beyond a great divide. When we understand this truth, we begin to appreciate the true power of the cross.

A Purpose of Adversity

Adversity is often God's tool for teaching us to hate sin and run toward Him.

Related Scripture
Psalm 97:10

Psalms 37:23-28

When we’re walking through adversity, it’s easy to focus exclusively on the momentary trouble. God, however, has specific purposes for bringing us through times of hardship.

One reason He may allow trials is to teach us to follow Him more closely by rejecting sin. In Psalm 97:10, we are told, “Hate evil, you who love the Lord.” Isn’t it true that we sometimes don’t act as if we hate evil? We may say, “Evil is all around me in this world, so I guess it’s inescapable! The best I can hope to do is to try and manage it.”

But we are not commanded to manage evil; instead, we are instructed to hate its very presence. In today’s passage, verse 27 says, “Depart from evil and do good, so you will abide forever.” When we see evil, we are to turn around and run in the opposite direction.

Adversity has a way of clarifying things. In difficult seasons, God refines our spiritual vision, and we begin to see sin’s destructiveness more clearly. The hardship that once felt purposeless becomes the very means by which He draws us closer to Himself, teaching us to cling to what is good and flee from what destroys.

The Church: What’s It All About?

Finding a church is easy, but choosing the right one requires biblical wisdom and the Holy Spirit's guidance.

Related Scripture
Ephesians 5:22-30

Colossians 1:18-20

Churches are easy to find, but choosing which one to join is more involved. Such an important decision deserves some investigation, and it’s good to start with what God’s Word says.

Ekklēsia—the Greek word for “church”—refers to people called out by God’s grace for the purpose of assembling to worship and serve Christ. Scripture describes the church as a body of believers and Jesus as the head (Ephesians 5:22-30; Col. 1:18).

God’s design involves worship, instruction, encouragement, and evangelism, as well as ministry to those in need—both within the fellowship and in the greater community. A healthy, vibrant congregation is possible when members rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The work of the church is to be done in His power, in humble and prayerful submission to the Lord.

When thinking about membership, consider these important questions: Does the church believe the Word of God? Is it discipling its people? Does the fellowship have missionary or evangelistic programs?

Joining a congregation is a significant matter, as a fellowship of believers is one tool God uses to mature and encourage His children. Listen for His Spirit’s direction as you prayerfully seek out a church home.

We All Have a Beautiful Testimony

When you faithfully share your testimony, God will use it to reach others.

Related Scripture
Isaiah 55:11

Psalms 126:1-6

We love inspiring stories. Biographies of those who make great use of a second chance tend to top bestseller lists. But few people experience something so dramatic. Most of us are wonderfully ordinary. Sadly, some believers think that being a “regular person” makes their testimony unexciting and less valuable. Nothing could be further from the truth.

A personal testimony is a way of expressing what God has done and is doing in our life. No matter how commonplace our words may seem compared to someone else’s, the Lord will see to it that they impact the hearers who need them.

Imagine this: A 6-year-old girl accepts Christ. As she grows, she’ll be able to tell her friends of God’s greatness, explaining that He made the gospel clear to her as a child and continues to reveal something new to her regularly. When she is 80, she’ll be able to share about a lifetime of walking with Jesus. Her testimony may not be “exciting,” but it doesn’t need to be. It will be spiritual gold.

No matter what your story is, God can and will use it. You have no idea how far-reaching your testimony can be. God says that His words will not return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11). And the story of Jesus’ saving grace is always worth telling.

Ending Gossip in Our Life

Turn your criticism into intercession—pray for those you're tempted to speak against.

Related Scripture
Psalm 141:3
1 Thessalonians 5:11,14 &17

Ephesians 4:29-32

Spreading rumors about other people exposes little about the true nature of the person being whispered about, but it reveals quite a lot about the speaker’s character. So, what should we do when we’re tempted to gossip?

First, we should confess and ask the Lord to help us to turn away from opportunities to talk about others. One thing we can do is pray Psalm 141:3 daily: “Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips.” This will help us remain mindful of our words.

Next, we must be on guard against temptation. Believers have a responsibility to set themselves apart from gossip in order to keep their thoughts and words pleasing to God. Being in the presence of one who spreads stories can tempt us to participate. But in a situation where rumors are being shared, the best course of action is to speak out against what’s being done and refuse to participate.

Finally, instead of talking about someone, it’s wise to pray for him or her. Getting into this habit will help train the mind to replace sinful patterns with God-pleasing ones. The Bible teaches us to encourage and comfort each other, and prayer is a good way to obey that instruction (1 Thessalonians 5:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:17).

The Character of Gossip

Speak words that honor God and strengthen the people He's placed in your path.

Related Scripture
Colossians 3:8
Ephesians 4:29

Romans 1:28-31

God wants our speech to be pleasing to Him. That leaves no room for idle talk or mean-spirited words, which are far from pleasant; we are to “put aside” such talk (Colossians 3:8).

In Romans 1, the apostle Paul is reminding believers that God has revealed Himself to all mankind and called us to be saints. In today’s passage, gossip is one of a number of actions we should turn away from. Take a moment to read Paul’s list in its entirety. Nothing there is appealing, of course, and every action named does great harm to us and our witness. Yet we are all guilty of committing them at times, aren’t we? We choose to envy what others have, to lie, to be unloving, or to spread gossip.

In Ephesians 4:29, the apostle Paul describes how we should speak: “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Before you speak, ask yourself, Does this glorify God? Does this uplift and encourage others? And pray, requesting that the Lord guide your tongue so your words will point others to Him.

Gossip achieves no good in anyone’s life, which is why the Lord warns against it. Instead, our words should build up, comfort, and encourage others.

How to Walk Wisely

To make God-honoring decisions, spend time daily in Scripture and attune your heart to the Holy Spirit's voice.

Related Scripture
2 Corinthians 5:7
Ephesians 4:32

Proverbs 28:26

As believers, we are to walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). However, it is sometimes a struggle to hear and apply God’s wisdom. For example, Ephesians 4:32 calls us to forgive each other, but that can be difficult when we’ve been hurt.

Godly wisdom is the capacity to view things as the Lord does and to respond according to biblical principles. This discernment isn’t automatic. Yes, God’s Spirit lives inside believers to guide us, but each individual chooses whether to pursue the wise way.

If we are going to walk in a way that honors the Lord, we must commit to pursuing Christ. Resolving to honor Him transforms the way we make decisions. Instead of following instincts or impulses, we choose to seek God’s viewpoint in a given situation, searching Scripture and listening for the Holy Spirit. As a result, the Spirit’s quiet voice becomes easier to discern, and those worldly distractions fade.

We have a loving heavenly Father who honors the heartfelt commitment to walk according to His will. God assumes responsibility for offering His children wisdom and enabling them to keep walking on the right path. That’s why following Him is always the best decision.

A Call to Godly Living

Life is full of options—it's wise to choose God's way.

Related Scripture
James 4:7
1 John 3:16

Romans 12:1

The apostle Paul wrote letters urging Christians to pursue godliness instead of the ways of the world. We do that by ...

Presenting our body to God. Our total being—mind, will, physical body, personality, and emotions—is to be turned over to our heavenly Father (James 4:7). Submitting ourselves to the Lord requires both a definite decision to give Him control and a daily commitment to remain under His authority. By surrendering to Him, we position ourselves for godly living.

Becoming a living sacrifice. Jesus left heaven to dwell among us so He might reconcile us to God. He offered up His life for our sake (1 John 3:16). And as believers, we are to follow His example. Paul used the term “living sacrifice” because it’s something that is ongoing and repeated daily.

Life is full of options, and many decisions come down to a choice between God’s way and ours. Since a righteous life is characterized by a focus on God, maturing Christians increasingly sacrifice their own desires and embrace His will. Though we won’t live perfectly, our goal should be to obey the Lord. When we do, we’ll find that aiming to please Him results in greater blessing than if we followed our own preferences.

When We Face Accusation

Even when people misunderstand your good intentions, God sees your heart and blesses your efforts to serve Him.

Reading Options
Jeremiah 17:10

Matthew 26:7-13

From time to time, undeserved criticism is the lot of every Christian. On occasion, it comes when we offer our best to the Lord and our good intentions are misunderstood. This kind of situation is described in today’s passage.

The verses from Matthew describe a woman who took a bottle of precious perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head as He reclined at table. There is no record of any great results coming from this loving gesture. No lives were saved, no converts were made, and nothing measurable was obtained. Worse still, the woman was scolded for her actions. Her efforts were viewed as extravagant, unreasonable, and irresponsible. Jesus, however, thought otherwise. The Lord’s commendation for this woman’s loving sacrifice was astonishing. He said, “What she has done will also be told, in memory of her” (Matt. 26:13 NIV).

We sometimes wonder how much God is noticing our efforts to serve Him. At times some of our greatest sacrifices seem to bring nothing but misunderstanding or criticism from our family members and friends.

But Jesus knows the depths of our soul, and He sees our heart (Jeremiah 17:10). Even if our sacrifices for the heavenly Father make little sense to others, it is His approval that matters.

The Enemy of Security

God's grace is inexhaustible—no sin is too great, no failure too frequent.

Reading Options
John 6:40
1 John 1:9
Hebrews 12:6-7

1 John 5:1-9

God promised that anyone who believes Jesus died on the cross for their sin will live forever in heaven (John 6:40). However, unconfessed sin creates a barrier between the Lord and the believer, which can short-circuit faith and assurance.

When we confess wrongdoing, the Father forgives and cleanses us (1 John 1:9). By failing to admit to sin, however, a Christian will feel distant from God. He or she may feel unworthy of the Father’s love and can even struggle with a sense of rejection. Some might even feel as if they are no longer saved. But that is impossible—while we can lose our assurance, we can never lose our salvation.

Too often, people mistake the Lord’s chastening hand for confirmation of their lost condition. Actually, the opposite is true. The heavenly Father disciplines those He loves, so correction is proof that we are His children as He guides us back into fellowship with Him (Hebrews 12:6-7).

Jesus is our advocate before God. Like ancient Israel’s high priests who offered blood sacrifices, He atoned for our sins by His own death on the cross. We can’t sin our way out of His grace. The minute we confess our wrongdoing, blessed assurance from our Father comes flooding back into our heart.
