A Call to Godly Living

Life is full of options—it's wise to choose God's way.

Related Scripture
James 4:7
1 John 3:16

Romans 12:1

The apostle Paul wrote letters urging Christians to pursue godliness instead of the ways of the world. We do that by ...

Presenting our body to God. Our total being—mind, will, physical body, personality, and emotions—is to be turned over to our heavenly Father (James 4:7). Submitting ourselves to the Lord requires both a definite decision to give Him control and a daily commitment to remain under His authority. By surrendering to Him, we position ourselves for godly living.

Becoming a living sacrifice. Jesus left heaven to dwell among us so He might reconcile us to God. He offered up His life for our sake (1 John 3:16). And as believers, we are to follow His example. Paul used the term “living sacrifice” because it’s something that is ongoing and repeated daily.

Life is full of options, and many decisions come down to a choice between God’s way and ours. Since a righteous life is characterized by a focus on God, maturing Christians increasingly sacrifice their own desires and embrace His will. Though we won’t live perfectly, our goal should be to obey the Lord. When we do, we’ll find that aiming to please Him results in greater blessing than if we followed our own preferences.

When We Face Accusation

Even when people misunderstand your good intentions, God sees your heart and blesses your efforts to serve Him.

Jeremiah 17:10

Matthew 26:7-13

From time to time, undeserved criticism is the lot of every Christian. On occasion, it comes when we offer our best to the Lord and our good intentions are misunderstood. This kind of situation is described in today’s passage.

The verses from Matthew describe a woman who took a bottle of precious perfume and poured it on Jesus’ head as He reclined at table. There is no record of any great results coming from this loving gesture. No lives were saved, no converts were made, and nothing measurable was obtained. Worse still, the woman was scolded for her actions. Her efforts were viewed as extravagant, unreasonable, and irresponsible. Jesus, however, thought otherwise. The Lord’s commendation for this woman’s loving sacrifice was astonishing. He said, “What she has done will also be told, in memory of her” (Matt. 26:13 NIV).

We sometimes wonder how much God is noticing our efforts to serve Him. At times some of our greatest sacrifices seem to bring nothing but misunderstanding or criticism from our family members and friends.

But Jesus knows the depths of our soul, and He sees our heart (Jeremiah 17:10). Even if our sacrifices for the heavenly Father make little sense to others, it is His approval that matters.

God’s Purpose for Intimacy

God doesn't want you to simply know about Him—He wants a genuine relationship with you.

Related Scripture
Jeremiah 17:7

Psalms 103:1-14

In a truly loving relationship, each person wants to know more about the other. As believers, we are sometimes guilty of taking a more self-interested approach and forgetting that God is the rightful center. When that is the case, we may head to church or into quiet time looking for something to inspire, motivate, or help us. But God’s purpose for intimacy is to reveal Himself.

Part of the problem is that we would like to practice our faith in the safest way possible. Bible study, prayer, and church are relatively easy compared to stepping out in faith or enduring hardship. To know God intimately is not a purely intellectual pursuit. A truth about the Lord is not really ours until He works it into our lived experience.

The only way to gain such knowledge is by choosing to trust and follow Him daily (Jeremiah 17:7). As we do, we’ll learn more about who He is. For example, we can read that the Spirit is the Comforter, but we won’t know this truth until we need and experience His comfort firsthand.

The Christian life isn’t about feeling good and deriving the greatest personal benefit. Rather, God builds an intimate relationship with each Christian. In this way, He can reveal more about Himself—truth by truth—as a believer needs that knowledge.

The Enemy of Security

God's grace is inexhaustible—no sin is too great, no failure too frequent.

John 6:40
1 John 1:9
Hebrews 12:6-7

1 John 5:1-9

God promised that anyone who believes Jesus died on the cross for their sin will live forever in heaven (John 6:40). However, unconfessed sin creates a barrier between the Lord and the believer, which can short-circuit faith and assurance.

When we confess wrongdoing, the Father forgives and cleanses us (1 John 1:9). By failing to admit to sin, however, a Christian will feel distant from God. He or she may feel unworthy of the Father’s love and can even struggle with a sense of rejection. Some might even feel as if they are no longer saved. But that is impossible—while we can lose our assurance, we can never lose our salvation.

Too often, people mistake the Lord’s chastening hand for confirmation of their lost condition. Actually, the opposite is true. The heavenly Father disciplines those He loves, so correction is proof that we are His children as He guides us back into fellowship with Him (Hebrews 12:6-7).

Jesus is our advocate before God. Like ancient Israel’s high priests who offered blood sacrifices, He atoned for our sins by His own death on the cross. We can’t sin our way out of His grace. The minute we confess our wrongdoing, blessed assurance from our Father comes flooding back into our heart.

What does it mean to serve God? Many of us have a distorted idea of service—to the point that we overlook opportunities right in front of us. For example, we might think joining the mission field or preaching a sermon is the only way to have a real impact. Those things are important, but the truth is, serving the Lord usually involves what’s happening in our life on a daily basis.

Don’t underestimate what God is doing in your seemingly ordinary day, whether that involves volunteering in your community, loving a new neighbor, caring for someone in need, or offering a listening, compassionate ear. You may not think these are important work, but they most certainly are. What you say to people, how you treat others, and the way you handle adversity are like stored-up treasures—God uses these things to reveal Himself to the world. When you live righteously, love those around you, and demonstrate kindness, compassion, and gentleness, you are bearing witness for Him (Matthew 5:16).

How is God serving His purpose through you? Before starting your day, say this prayer: “Lord, I choose Your way. Accomplish Your will in me, whatever that takes.” When you do, things will happen in your life that you never expected—God will bless you beyond all measure (Galatians 6:9).

Praying on Our Knees

Only God can soften a heart and open a mind—let's pray and watch Him work.

Related Scripture
Psalm 46:1

Hebrews 4:16NLT
So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most

Have you ever been in a situation where people reacted negatively towards you? Maybe at this very moment you’re dealing with a difficult home life, work relationship, or situation at school.

The way to handle troubles is on our knees before the Lord. The heavenly Father waits for us to approach His throne through prayer so we can gain His divine perspective and receive instruction on how to proceed. But in our prayer time, a battle often takes place between what we want (avoiding conflict) and what the Lord has planned for us (to move through it in faith).

When we humbly seek the Lord through prayer, we invite Him to take the lead in our situation and to accomplish His plan. Scripture promises that He is our refuge, strength, and help (Psalm 46:1). He may direct us in ways we find surprising, but we can trust they will be for our good and His glory.

Praying on our knees is a gesture of humility, which reminds us God is the Master and we’re His servants. In fact, He can also see a humble attitude in those who cannot kneel. He knows all things, whereas our perspective is narrow. What’s more, He is all-powerful. He can soften hard hearts and open closed minds. We cannot. Let’s make prayer a regular part of our day and watch what God does, in both our life and the lives of those around us.

Our Appointment

Jesus paid the penalty for sin, making it possible for us to live forever with our Father in heaven.

The Judgment of the Dead
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.
13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.
14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death.
15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

The moment we were born, a countdown began on our life. Every tick of the clock brings us one step closer to meeting the Lord face-to-face. Each of us will stand before Him as we approach our eternal destination.

The only way to gain eternal life is through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ (1 John 5:11-12). Truly, our sin has separated us from the Father. But God’s Son provided the solution to this universal problem: Christ lived a perfect life and then died on the cross at Calvary to atone for the countless sins of mankind (Romans 6:23). After three days, He rose from the grave, defeating death and evil. By trusting in what He did on our behalf, we no longer have to live apart from God.

To receive this amazing gift, we must simply believe in the Lord Jesus and what He did. As a result, we become new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17), are adopted as God’s children (Ephesians 1:5), and enter into a never-ending personal relationship with our heavenly Father.

Do you have confidence about where you will spend eternity? You may assume you have time to figure out this important issue, but don’t wait another minute to settle the matter, because later may never come. Repent of your sin today and follow Jesus.

Seeking Guidance: The Pattern

When we truly believe God's way is best and let go of our own plans, we position ourselves to hear His voice.

Ask, Seek, Knock

8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened

Yesterday, we saw there’s a pattern to seeking God’s guidance, and the first step—cleansing—is important throughout the entire process. Interestingly, all but one of the remaining steps have no particular order and can actually fit together in many ways.

After we’ve asked for cleansing, we must surrender—this is not an admission of weakness but, rather, an expression of humility and trust. The Lord is looking for commitment to follow Him no matter what. Therefore, surrender must precede even our prayers for guidance. 1 John 5:14-15 says that the Lord hears and grants our petitions when we ask according to His will.

God often guides believers to an answer through His Word (Psalm 119:105). Our reading might take us to a passage that deals with our specific situation, or it might reveal a principle that applies. God can also speak a clear message directly to a person’s heart. The key is to believe that the Lord is going to guide you—and then to live out that faith (Mark 11:24).

The process of seeking guidance is often slow. We are wise to be patient, because running ahead or manipulating circumstances can be a costly mistake. Our omniscient, sovereign God “acts in behalf of the one who waits for Him” (Isaiah 64:4). Those who seek direction will receive—that’s a promise (Matthew 7:7-8).

Seeking Guidance: The First Step

Through humble confession, the barriers that keep us from hearing God's guidance are cleared away.

Related Scripture

Psalm 66:18

1 John 1:8-10

By forsaking the worldly way, believers choose a narrow path (Matthew 7:13). However, we’re not meant to wander blindly on it. The Holy Spirit is our guide. But have you ever struggled to discern His divine guidance?

Seeking God’s direction involves a pattern that begins with cleansing—in other words, the first place to look is at ourselves. Ask, “Father, do You see anything in my life that might interfere with my understanding what You are saying?” Sin hinders the process: It clouds our judgment and how we experience the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Bible teaches that God cleanses us from unrighteousness when we confess our sins (1 John 1:9). It also contains a clear warning for those who refuse to relinquish a wrong habit or attitude—the Lord doesn’t heed their cries (Psalm 66:18). But even when mistakes are made, God will never forsake those who call Him Father (Hebrews 13:5).

Cleansing is woven into the process of gaining divine guidance. The Holy Spirit brings sin to our attention and equips us to deal with it. So on the way to receiving His clear direction, we may revisit this first step of cleansing often. The result is, we can continually experience a time of rich spiritual growth and renewal.

Sent to Serve

Pause a moment and ask God to open your eyes to the people around you who need encouragement and hope.

Reading Options
Matthew 20:28

John 17:18-21

Too often, people wrongly believe they have no real purpose in life. But that isn’t what God has planned for His children. So let’s look to Jesus as our example for how to think and live. Scripture clearly shows His coming was no accident and His time was not wasted—He came to accomplish a goal.

Many times in the Gospels, Jesus referred to having been sent by the Father. That word implies focus and intention. Jesus didn’t just appear; He was sent into the world for a clear purpose.

And what was that purpose? Matthew 20:28 reveals Jesus came not to conquer but to serve. His life shows a clear mission, and everything He did in the Gospels—revealing the Father, dying for sin, saving the lost, and providing abundant life—was an integral part of His purpose.

No matter where He was, who He was with, or what He was doing, the Lord was always mindful of the reason for His coming. What’s more, just as Jesus was sent by the Father, so we are sent by Christ—to carry His message of hope throughout the world. Is this purpose evident in your life? Pray for clarity and focus as you serve the Lord today.

The Spiritual Fruit of Patience

As our confidence in God grows, so does our capacity to wait for His answers and accept His will.

Related Scripture
Galatians 5:22-23

Colossians 3:12-13

The “fruit of the Spirit” includes patience (Galatians 5:22-23), but that doesn’t mean the Holy Spirit will force it into the believer’s life. Instead, He acts as our ever-dependable teacher and the one who enables our growth. Spiritual fruit matures over time as we obey the Lord and surrender to His will.

Patience involves waiting for God’s timing, whether in regard to things we desire or challenges caused by other people. Either way, it’s an outgrowth of deepening faith. The Holy Spirit urges believers to take note of the Lord’s handiwork on the journey through life. Our confidence in Him is nurtured by answered prayer, the rich blessings that arise unexpectedly from difficult circumstances, and every trace of good that God brings from a bad situation. As our trust in His goodness and sovereignty grows, we are willing to wait for God’s solutions and outcomes.

In fact, recognizing God’s sovereignty is key to developing patience. A significant part of surrendering to His control is waiting upon Him to do what He will.

Patience doesn’t come naturally. The Holy Spirit strengthens our resolve to endure without complaint. After all, God is slow only from a human standpoint. From a divine, eternal perspective, He’s always working at the perfect speed.
