esus came to a town of Samaria called Sychar,
โ near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.
โJacobโs well was there.
โJesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well.
โIt was about noon.
โ
โA woman of Samaria came to draw water.
โJesus said to her,
โ โGive me a drink.โ
โHis disciples had gone into the town to buy food.
โThe Samaritan woman said to him,
โ โHow can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?โ
โโFor Jews use nothing in common with Samaritans.โ
โJesus answered and said to her,
โ โIf you knew the gift of God
โ and who is saying to you, โGive me a drink,โ
โ you would have asked him
โ and he would have given you living water.โ
โThe woman said to him,
โ โSir, you do not even have a bucket and the cistern is deep;
โ where then can you get this living water?
โAre you greater than our father Jacob,
โ who gave us this cistern and drank from it himself
โ with his children and his flocks?โ
โJesus answered and said to her,
โ โEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again;
โ but whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst;
โ the water I shall give will become in him
โ a spring of water welling up to eternal life.โ
โThe woman said to him,
โ โSir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty
โ or have to keep coming here to draw water.
โ
โโI can see that you are a prophet.
โOur ancestors worshiped on this mountain;
โ but you people say that the place to worship is in Jerusalem.โ
โJesus said to her,
โ โBelieve me, woman, the hour is coming
โ when you will worship the Father
โ neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
โYou people worship what you do not understand;
โ we worship what we understand,
โ because salvation is from the Jews.
โBut the hour is coming, and is now here,
โ when true worshipers will worship the Father in Spirit and truth;
โ and indeed the Father seeks such people to worship him.
โGod is Spirit, and those who worship him
โ must worship in Spirit and truth.โ
โThe woman said to him,
โ โI know that the Messiah is coming, the one called the Christ;
โ when he comes, he will tell us everything.โ
โJesus said to her,
โ โI am he, the one who is speaking with you.โ
โ
โMany of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him.
โWhen the Samaritans came to him,
โ they invited him to stay with them;
โ and he stayed there two days.
โMany more began to believe in him because of his word,
โ and they said to the woman,
โ โWe no longer believe because of your word;
โ for we have heard for ourselves,
โ and we know that this is truly the savior of the world.โ
