Today, August 15, we joyfully celebrate the Feast of Saint Tarcisius, the young martyr of the Eucharist and patron saint of altar servers. His life is a powerful example of courage, faith, humility, and, above all, deep love and reverence for the Holy Eucharist.
Saint Tarcisius lived during the third century in Rome, at a time when Christians faced persecution because of their faith. Although he was still young, he already possessed a strong devotion to Jesus Christ and a willingness to serve Him. According to Christian tradition, Tarcisius was an acolyte who was entrusted with bringing the Holy Eucharist to Christians who were unable to participate in the celebration of the Mass.
While carrying the Blessed Sacrament, Tarcisius was confronted by people who wanted to know what he was carrying. He refused to surrender the Eucharist entrusted to him and courageously protected the Blessed Sacrament. He remained faithful to the sacred responsibility given to him, even at the cost of his own life. Tradition places his martyrdom in the year 257. (vatican.va)
The story of Saint Tarcisius gives every altar server a profound lesson: to serve at the altar is to serve Christ Himself.
His young age reminds us that holiness is not reserved for adults. A young person can have a deep faith, live with courage, and become an instrument of Godโs love. Tarcisius teaches us that even the simplest acts of service can become a beautiful offering when they are done with genuine love for God.
For every Lingkod-Dambana, Saint Tarcisius is more than a patron saint. He is a model of what an altar server is called to become: faithful in service, reverent in the presence of the Eucharist, humble in carrying out responsibilities, courageous in living the faith, and willing to give oneself for Christ.
Whenever we enter the sanctuary, may we remember the sacredness of the ministry entrusted to us. When we carry the cross, candles, thurible, or other sacred objects; when we assist the priest and deacon; when we prepare the altar; and when we participate attentively in the Holy Mass, may we never forget that our service ultimately points to Jesus Christ, present in the Holy Eucharist.
As we celebrate Altar Servers Month, may the example of Saint Tarcisius renew our commitment to serve with greater love and dedication.
May we serve not because we want recognition, but because we love the Lord.
May we serve not only when it is convenient, but also when sacrifice is required.
May we learn to be disciplined, prayerful, humble, obedient, and faithful.
May we understand that being an altar server is not simply about wearing a vestment or knowing the movements of the liturgy. It is about allowing our service at the altar to shape us into better disciples of Christ.
To all altar servers of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, may Saint Tarcisius inspire us to treasure every opportunity to serve. May we continue to grow not only in our knowledge of the liturgy, but also in our friendship with Jesus.
Let this Altar Servers Month be a time of renewalโa time to remember why we began serving, to appreciate the privilege of standing near the altar, to strengthen our brotherhood and fellowship, and to place Christ at the center of everything we do.
We are young, but we are called.
We are servants, but we are entrusted with something sacred.
We serve at the altar, but ultimately, we serve Christ.
PRAYER TO SAINT TARCISIUS
O glorious Saint Tarcisius,
young servant and martyr of the Eucharist,
you who loved Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament,
pray for all altar servers who faithfully serve at His altar.
Teach us to serve with humility,
to pray with sincerity,
to act with discipline,
and to approach the Holy Eucharist with profound love and reverence.
Help us to remain faithful in our ministry,
especially when serving becomes difficult or challenging.
Give us the courage to stand firm in our faith,
the humility to accept correction,
and the perseverance to continue serving with joy.
May our service never be for recognition or praise,
but always for the greater glory of God.
May our hands that serve at the altar,
our voices that proclaim His Word,
and our hearts that seek Him,
always lead us closer to Christ.
Saint Tarcisius, model of young people and patron of altar servers,
help us to love the Eucharist as you did.
Teach us to become faithful servants of Christ,
responsible members of His Church,
and courageous witnesses of our faith.
May we always remember that every time we serve at the altar,
we are given the beautiful privilege of serving Jesus Himself.
