"Memento homo, quia pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris"
(Remember, man, that you are dust. And unto dust, you shall return.)

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence.

For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms of fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Christian liturgies there is a period of preparation for the great fast of Lent, during which the faithful are readied for the coming of this major period in the liturgical year so that they can gradually enter into the ascetic practices that they will observe until Easter.

This preparatory period of Lent lasts for three weeks in the majority of rites. In the Roman Rite, these three Sundays are called Septuagesima, Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima. These names come from an ancient counting system, and refer to the period of ten days in which each of these Sundays falls. They precede the first Sunday of Lent (Quadragesima)

As the sun sets in the horizon, the Church prays her last Alleluias during tonight's First Vespers as she formally enters Septuagesima. This ancient word of praise will not be mentioned in her liturgies until the singing of the Great Alleluia during the Easter Vigil.

β„£. Benedicamus Domino, alleluia, alleluia.
β„Ÿ. Deo gratias, alleluia, alleluia.

The covering of the head with a veil symbolizes the reality of a woman sheltered in the side of her Source and becoming one with Him. She becomes covered and hidden in her Divine Spouse.

REQUIESCAT IN PACE | Given the sudden death of our beloved Pope Benedict XVI, the Societas Missae Latinae Sancti Ioanni Evangelistae will be having a Requiem Mass for the pope. This is anchored to the fact that this society is founded during the early years of Pope Benedict XVI’s Motu Proprio: Summorum Pontificum; which became an avenue for us to help the Church in promoting and preserving what is sacred to the Church throughout Her history. Through this Motu Proprio, things were clarified such as: defining the two (2) forms of the Roman Rite, and that the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (Latin Mass) was never abrogated.

Brethren, during this Requiem Mass, please join us to pray for Pope Benedict XVI’s soul. This is also the time for us to remember why in the first place we are doing this. This is the time for us to remember what Pope Benedict XVI said in his Motu Proprio, β€œWhat earlier generations held as sacred, remains sacred and great for us too, and it cannot be all of a sudden entirely forbidden or even considered harmful. (Pope Benedict XVI, 2007)”.
