Gospel text (Jn 17:1-11a): Jesus raised his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you, just as you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to all you gave him. Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ. I glorified you on earth by accomplishing the work that you gave me to do. Now glorify me, Father, with you, with the glory that I had with you before the world began.

I revealed your name to those whom you gave me out of the world. They belonged to you, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you gave me is from you, because the words you gave to me I have given to them, and they accepted them and truly understood that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for the ones you have given me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine, and I have been glorified in them. And now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.”

Today, the Gospel of Saint John—which we have been reading for days—begins by speaking to us of the “hour”: “Father, the hour has come” (Jn 17:1). The culminating moment, the glorification of all things, the ultimate gift of Christ who gives himself for all… “The hour” is still a reality hidden from mankind; it will be revealed as the plot of Jesus' life opens the perspective of the cross to us.

Has the hour come? The hour for what? For the hour has come for mankind to know the name of God, that is, his action, his way of addressing humanity, his way of speaking to us in the Son, in Christ whom the Father loves.

The men and women of today, knowing God through Jesus (“the words you gave to me I have given to them”: Jn 17:8), become witnesses of life, of the divine life that unfolds within us through the sacrament of baptism. In Him we live, move, and have our being; In Him we find words that nourish and make us grow; in Him we discover what God wants from us: fullness, human fulfillment, an existence that does not live by personal vainglory but by an existential attitude that rests on God himself and his glory. As Saint Irenaeus reminds us, “The glory of God is man fully alive.” Let us praise God and His glory so that the human person may reach his fullness!

We are marked by the Gospel of Jesus Christ; we work for the glory of God, a task that translates into greater service to the lives of men and women today. This means working for true human communication, true human happiness, fostering joy in the sad, showing compassion for the weak... In short: open to Life (with a capital L).

Through the Spirit, God works within every human being and dwells in the depths of each person, constantly encouraging everyone to live by the values of the Gospel. The Good News is an expression of the liberating happiness He wants to give us.

Gospel text (Lk 24:46-53): Jesus said to his disciples: “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold I am sending the promise of my Father upon you; but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them. As he blessed them he parted from them and was taken up to heaven. They did him homage and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and they were continually in the temple praising God.

Today, on the Ascension of our Lord, we once more remember the “mission” that we have been entrusted with: “You are witnesses of these things” (Lk 24:48). God's Word is still alive today: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8). Also today, there is a current and urgent demand for the Word of God: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19); “He said to them, ‘Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature’” (Mk 16:15).

On this Solemnity, this commission from our Master strongly reverberates. Jesus —wrapped up in our humanity— has completed his mission in the world, left us to sit at the right hand of the Father, and sent us strength from above —the Holy Spirit.

I cannot but wonder: —Is the Lord acting through me? What are the signs attached to my testimony? And I remember the verse of the poet: “You cannot wait for God to tell you: ‘I am’. A God that reveals his power does not make sense. You should know God blows through you from the very beginning, and if your chest burns and shows nothing, then God is working in it.”

And this must be our sign: the fire burning inside, the fire that —as with the prophet Jeremiah— cannot be stopped: The Word of God is alive. And one feels like saying: “All you peoples, clap your hands; shout to God with joyful cries… God has gone up with a shout; the LORD, amid trumpet blasts. Sing praise to God, sing praise; sing praise to our king, sing praise” (Ps 47:2.6-7).

His kingdom is germinating in people's hearts —in your heart— like a seed about to bear fruit: Sing, dance, for your Lord. And, if you do not know how to, place the Word in your lips until it comes down to your heart: God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, give me the spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I can get to know you. Throw your light upon the eyes of my heart so that I understand the hope you are showing me the wealth of the glory you have ready for me, and the greatness of your power that you have displayed with the resurrection of Christ.

Jn 14:23-29

Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me.

“I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”

Today, before celebrating the Ascension and Pentecost, we reread the words known as the Sermon of the Last Supper, in which we must see diverse ways of presenting a single message, since everything springs from the union of Christ with the Father and from God's will to associate us with this mystery of love.

One day, Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus was offered various gifts to choose from, and she—with great determination, despite her young age—said: "I choose all." As an adult, she understood that this choosing all had to be realized in wanting to be love in the Church, for a body without love would be meaningless. God is this mystery of love, a concrete, personal love, made flesh in the Son Jesus, who goes so far as to give all: He himself, his life, and his deeds are the highest and clearest message from God.

It is from this all-encompassing love that "peace" is born. This is a yearned-for word today: we want peace, and all we see are alarms and violence. We will only achieve peace if we turn to Jesus, for it is He who gives it to us as the fruit of his total love. But He does not give it to us as the world does (cf. Jn 14:27), for the peace of Jesus is not stillness and carefreeness, but quite the opposite: solidarity that becomes brotherhood, the ability to look at ourselves and others with new eyes, as the Lord does, and thus forgive one another. From this is born a great serenity that allows us to see things as they are, and not as they appear. Following this path will lead to happiness.

"The Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you" (Jn 14:26). In these final days of Easter, let us pray to open ourselves to the Spirit: we received him when we were baptized and confirmed, but it is necessary that—as a further gift—he may sprout within us again and lead us to places where we would not dare.

Jn 15:18-21

Jesus said to his disciples; “If the world hates you, realize that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love its own; but because you do not belong to the world, and I have chosen you out of the world, the world hates you. Remember the word I spoke to you, ‘No slave is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. And they will do all these things to you on account of my name, because they do not know the one who sent me.”

Today, the Gospel is in opposition to the world of Christ's followers. The world represents whatever sinfulness there may be in our existence. Consequently, one of the main characteristics of Christ's followers is fighting all evil and sin to be found in the world and inside every man. This is why, Jesus is the light of men, the light that illuminates the world's darkness. Karol Wojtyla exhorts us “so that this light makes us strong and capable to accept and love the entire Truth of Christ, and love it even more when opposed by our world.”

Neither Christians nor the Church can follow the passing fads or criteria of this world. Christ's criterion is the unique, definitive and unavoidable one for us to follow. It is not up to Jesus to adapt Himself to the world where we live; it is up to us instead to transform our lives to imitate Jesus. “Christ is the same one whether yesterday, today or always.” This should make us wonder. When our secularized society demands from us and from the Church certain changes or licenses, we are simply being asked to move away from God. We, Christians, however, should be faithful to Christ and to His message. Saint Irenaeus says: “God does not need anything, man needs communion with God, so the glory of man is to preserve and continue the service of God.”

This fidelity may, quite often, mean persecution: “If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you” (Jn 15:20). We should not be afraid of persecution; we should rather be afraid of not attempting strongly enough to always do God's will. Let's be brave and let us proclaim without any fear Christ resurrected, light and joy of all Christians! Let us allow the Holy Spirit to transform us so that we can inform the whole world about Him!

Jn 15:12-17

Jesus said to his disciples, “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. This I command you: love one another.”

Today, we hear again the intimate confidence Jesus had last Holy Thursday: “As the Father loves me, so I also love you” (Jn 15:9). The Father's love for the Son is immense, tender, dear. We can read it in the Book of Proverbs, when He affirms that long before initiating His deeds “then was I beside him as artisan; I was his delight day by day, playing before him all the while” (Pr 8:30). This is how He loves us and, prophetically announcing it in the same book, He adds: “Playing over the whole of his earth, having my delight with human beings.” (Pr 8:31).

The Father loves the Son, and Jesus tells us so: “And He that sent me is with me: the Father has not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him” (Jn 8:29). The Father loudly proclaimed it in the Jordan, when He says: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Mk 1:11) and later, on Mount Tabor: “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.” (Mk 9:7).

Jesus has replied, “Abbà”, Father! Now He reveals to us, “As the Father loves me, so I also love you.” And what shall we do? To indeed stay by His love, to abide by His commandments, to love His Father's Will. Is this not the example He gives us? “I always keep my Father's commandments and remain in his love.”

But we, who are weak, fickle, cowards and —why not just admit it— even wicked at times, shall we then lose His friendship forever? No, He will not allow us to be tempted well beyond our own abilities! And, if we ever fail to abide by His commandments, let us ask Him for the grace of quickly coming back to Him, as the prodigal son to the Father's house. And to be able to receive the Sacrament of Penance and be forgiven for our sins. “I love you” —Jesus tells us—. “I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy may be complete” (Jn 15:11).

“Sinabi ko sa inyo ang mga bagay na ito samantalang kasama pa ninyo ako. Ngunit ang Patnubay, ang Espiritu Santo na susuguin ng Ama sa pangalan ko, ang siyang magtuturo sa inyo ng lahat ng bagay at magpapaalaala ng lahat ng sinabi ko sa inyo.”
