BUILDING OUR CHARACTERS UP
Matthew 7:20
Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.
After we have come to know the Lord, there's a deep desire in our hearts that we want to be used by Him in terms of service. That's why, our "first" response would be ministry involvement. We have this eagerness inside of us that wanted to serve Him in the ways that we can.
But most of the times, we think serving Him solves it all, we "forget" to build our characters up.
Philippians 2:12-13
[12] Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, [13] for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
Working out our salvation doesn't only require external things that we do for the Lord. There's a passage in the Bible that is a hard pill to swallow. In Matthew 7:21-23, we can see here that even though the people who come before the Lord "serve" Him, He says He didn't know them in return. Why is it so?
Serving Him is never a wrong thing to do. In fact, that is what we need to do! We ought to share the Gospel, do our ministries for His glory. Those are GIFTS for the KINGDOM.
Aren't the products in serving Him the fruit?
Galatians 5:22-23
[22] But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, [23] gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
The fruit is our character. My dear friends, we can be more Christ-like if we start building our characters first. Having passion is good, but we need COMPASSION. Compassion is the result of love, and love is a fruit of the Spirit.
If we truly want to lead people towards Christ, this is the reality -- unbelievers identify us not with the success we have in the ministry but with our characters.
Remember, the apostles built their characters, even our Lord Jesus. He grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man (Luke 2:52). Character is not something to neglect, but to work out.
