Saved by Grace or Saved by Works?
For a long time, theologians and so-called theologians have debated over the method of salvation. Is a person saved by grace alone, or by works? One might sound easy, and the other might feel impossible, but the truth is this: you cannot ever mix the two.
Biblically, God offered free salvation to mankind through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 makes this very clear: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast." Salvation is not something we earn, deserve, or achieve; it is a gift given freely by God.
The problem is, people often find this “too easy” and therefore unsatisfying. This was the very issue of the Judaizers in the New Testament. They wanted salvation to come with works of the law so that they could seal it with their own effort, taking credit for their righteousness. But Paul repeatedly warned against this distortion of the gospel. In Galatians 2:16 he writes: “A person is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.”
Paul is very clear in his epistles: Christ is sufficient, and Christ is far greater than every good work we can ever do. Our best efforts will always fall short of God’s perfect standard (Romans 3:23), but Christ fulfilled the law perfectly on our behalf.
Now, this does not mean that we should ignore good works or stop living rightly. Rather, the Bible teaches that good works naturally flow out of true salvation. We are not good in order to be saved; we are good because we are saved. The evidence of salvation is a transformed life.
Galatians 5:22-23 gives us a clear picture of this transformation: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” These are not the causes of salvation but the results of salvation. They are signs that the Holy Spirit dwells within a believer.
So, if you ask me, “How can I know if I am truly a son of God?” The answer is: by your lifestyle. A transformed heart and a renewed mind will bear fruit that cannot be hidden. Romans 12:2 reminds us not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so that we may discern God’s will.
You may not agree with me, and that is fine, but do not ever let pride blind you to go against the Bible. The Word of God is clear: we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. Works have their place, not as the root of salvation, but as the fruit of it.
