THE UNACCEPTABLE SACRIFICES
Reflection on Leviticus 22:17–31
The passage is often read as “God rejects defective animals,” but beneath that is a broader principle: what we offer reflects what we value.
The people could have been tempted to keep their strongest animals for themselves and give God the weak, injured, or unwanted ones. The issue was not merely the physical defect itself; it was the heart behind the offering. Giving God leftovers communicates, “This is enough for Him.” Giving the best communicates honor, gratitude, and trust.
Today, most people are not bringing animals to an altar. But the principle can still apply:
* Giving time only when nothing else needs attention
* Offering effort only when convenient
* Serving with half-interest while giving our best energy elsewhere
So the reflection may become:
What am I giving God — my best, my leftovers, or something in between?
Now a question:
Why specifically male animals? Is God gender-biased?
Not necessarily. The instruction about male animals does not automatically mean God valued males more than females.
In the ancient Israelite context, male animals often represented greater economic value and strength:
* A healthy male from the herd could be used for breeding and increase the flock.
* Giving a prime male could be costly for the owner.
* Sacrifice involved surrendering something valuable, not simply disposing of something less useful.
So God was asking for an offering that truly cost something.
