Buy. Use. Throw. Repeat. In a nutshell, thatβs the life cycle of single-use plastics (SUPs) for us consumers. Or is it?
Convenient and affordable, SUPs like sachets, bottles, and plastic bags are staples in the Filipino household. Theyβre so pervasive that we rarely consider the hidden costs of SUPs.
From its production to disposal, the real-life cycle of SUPs impacts our lives in insidious ways. One of the greatest consequences of SUPs is their contribution to climate change. Fossil fuel-based chemicals used in SUP production release greenhouse gasses, driving global warming.
This year, Climate Reality Philippinesβ digital campaign will reiterate that plastic management and recovery regulations, without a concrete mechanism and timeline for eliminating SUPs, will not address the urgency and gravity of the plastic pollution problem.
To showcase effective solutions, we're building a community of practice focused on zero-waste solutions. This will culminate in the launch of our interactive map, showcasing local policies, private sector initiatives, and the power of community action in regulating and banning single-use plastics across the country.
