The Tradition of Bayanihan

The Practice: Neighborsโ€”often 15 to 60 peopleโ€”place long bamboo poles and ropes under a traditional wooden stilt house (bahay kubo) to lift and carry the entire building on their shoulders to a new plot of land.

The Spirit: This communal work is done completely voluntary and free of charge, driven by kindness and a shared duty to help a fellow villager.

The Celebration: After successfully placing the house at the new site, the family traditionally hosts a small feast or gathering to thank all the volunteers
