Pastoral Appeal | On Responsible Garbage Management

Today, I would like to express my full support for the initiatives of our City Government in addressing the serious problem of garbage management in Cebu.

But I would also like to say something very important, something very simple, and something very true: The real solution to the garbage problem is not in machines. It is in changing habits.

No technology, no equipment, no landfill, no budget will ever be enough if our daily habits remain the same.

Because garbage is not first a city problem. Garbage is a lifestyle problem.

โธป
Garbage begins at home

Most of the waste we see on the streets did not begin there. It began inside homes.

It began when we did not segregate. It began when we used plastic without thinking. It began when we threw something away carelessly, believing it would simply โ€œdisappear.โ€

But nothing truly disappears. It only goes somewhere elseโ€”to rivers, to seas, to dumpsites, and eventually back to us.

โธป
This is a moral and spiritual responsibility

As Christians, we believe that creation is a gift from God entrusted to us. We are not owners of this earth. We are stewards. To throw garbage irresponsibly is not only bad citizenship. It is poor stewardship. It is forgetting that God entrusted this beautiful island of Cebu to our care.

Caring for the environment is not optional for Christians. It is part of our faith.

โธป
Small habits, big impact

The solution is not complicated:
Segregate waste at home
Reduce single-use plastics
Reuse what can still be used
Compost biodegradable waste
Teach children to be disciplined with trash

These are small acts. But when done by thousands of families every day, they become powerful.

โธป
A call to our parishes, schools, and communities

I ask our parishes, schools, religious communities, and organizations to lead by example:
Practice proper waste segregation
Avoid plastic in parish events
Teach environmental responsibility in catechism and classrooms
Show that faith and care for creation go together

Let our churches be models of discipline and responsibility.

โธป
A shared responsibility

I humbly ask every Cebuano Catholic: Do not wait for the government to solve this problem for you. Be part of the solution.

Because the cleaner Cebu we desire will not come from machines. It will come from changed hearts and changed habits.

โธป
Let us remember:

The real solution to the garbage problem is not in machines. It is in changing habits.

May our love for God be seen in the way we care for His creation. May our faith be seen in the discipline of our daily actions.

And may future generations inherit a Cebu that is cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful than the one we have today.

With my prayers and blessings,

+Alberto S. Uy
Archbishop of Cebu

Pray for Priests Who Are Tired and Those Tempted in Their Vocation

Let us remember in our prayers the priests who carry the heavy burdens of their vocationโ€”the exhaustion that cannot simply be relieved by rest or time away. They bear the worries, pains, and sorrows of those who turn to them for guidance, becoming vulnerable as they serve as sources of hope and encouragement.

Pray that they may persevere faithfully in their vocation, offering the sacraments generously to the faithful, and remain steadfast in holiness. May they resist every temptationโ€”whether of money, lust, popularity, disobedience, or worldly pleasuresโ€”and remain true to Christโ€™s call.

As they navigate the demands of ministry and face their own struggles, let us pray that they find strength in prayer, joy in their service, and unwavering courage to continue shepherding their flock with love and dedication.

Pray for them, as they continually pray for us.

"Think before you post."

Sabi ng Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 2240:

โ€œSubmission to authority and co-responsibility for the common good make it morally obligatory to pay taxes.โ€

Ibig sabihin:

โ€œGive to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.โ€
Matthew 22:21

Ang malinaw ay: bayaran ang dapat bayaran.

๐Ÿ‘‰Bakit tax-exempt ang Simbahan bilang institusyon?

Nakasulat mismo sa 1987 Philippine Constitution, Article VI, Section 28(3):

โ€œChurchesโ€ฆ and all lands, buildings and improvements actually, directly, and exclusively used for religious, charitable, or educational purposes shall be exempt from taxation.โ€

Bakit exempt?

Dahil ang Simbahan ay:

โœ…hindi negosyo
โœ…hindi profit-driven
โœ…at ang misyon nito ay public good: education, charity, worship, feeding programs, schools, hospitals, etc.

(YES, pwede silang ma-tax)
โœ” 1. Kung may commercial activity

Halimbawa:
โœ…renta ng building
โœ…commercial parking
โœ…dormitory na pang-negosyo
โœ…properties for profit

Kapag negosyo = may tax.

โœ” 2. Kung pinaghahalo ang religious at business use

Halimbawa:
โœ…kalahati simbahan
โœ…kalahati pinaparentahan
Ang religious side = exempt
Pero ang commercial side = taxable

โœ” 3. Kung hindi maayos ang registration

Hindi registered as non-profit?
Puwedeng mawalan ng exemption.

INC ka man o Muslim,
Agnostic ka man o Born Again

One of the most common assumptions in modern Christianityโ€”especially among Protestantsโ€”is that the Bible came first, and that the Church somehow sprang from it. This idea feels intuitive today because we live in a world where the Bible is printed, bound, indexed, and easily accessible.

But historically, biblically, and logically, this assumption is completely false.

๐Ÿ‘‰ The Catholic Church came first.
๐Ÿ‘‰ The Bible is a document of the Church.

Jesus Christ did not come down from heaven carrying a New Testament.

He did not write a book.

๐Ÿ“Œ He founded a Church.

Christ established a visible, teaching Church with authority. He commissioned the apostles to preach, not to write:

For over 300 years, the Catholic Church existed without a formally defined New Testament. Christians baptized, celebrated the Eucharist, ordained bishops, defended doctrine, and even died as martyrsโ€”without owning a Bible as we know it today.

โŒ No table of contents
โŒ No leather-bound New Testament
โŒ No โ€œBible-onlyโ€ Christianity

Yet the Church flourished.

The Bible did not fall from the sky.
It did not magically assemble itself.

The Bible is a collection of books, written over centuries, preserved, discerned, and canonized by the Catholic Church.

Many New Testament books:
๐Ÿ“Œ Do not name their authors
๐Ÿ“Œ Were written decades after Christ
๐Ÿ“Œ Were debated and disputed (Hebrews, James, Revelation, 2 Peter, Jude)

Some books were accepted in some churches and rejected in others. Others were read publicly in worship but later excluded. Without an authoritative Church, no one could know with certainty which books were inspired.

It was the Catholic Church, through her bishops and councils (Rome 382, Hippo 393, Carthage 397 & 419), that:

โœ”๏ธ Collected the writings
โœ”๏ธ Tested them against apostolic teaching
โœ”๏ธ Selected which were inspired
โœ”๏ธ Canonized the 27 books of the New Testament

The same Church Protestants now accuse of corruption is the very Church that gave them the Bible.

Sacred Scripture itself tells us where authority resides:

Notice carefully:

๐Ÿ“Œ Scripture does not say the Bible is the pillar and foundation of truth
๐Ÿ“Œ It says the Church is

๐Ÿ“– The Bible points to the Church, not away from it.

The idea that โ€œthe Church comes from the Bibleโ€ is a 16th-century invention. For the first 1,500 years of Christianity, no Christian believed in Sola Scriptura.

Ask a simple question:

How do you know which books belong in the Bible?

The Bible does not list its own contents.
There is no inspired table of contents.

If one rejects the authority of the Catholic Church, then one has no rational basis for accepting the New Testament canon at all.

To accept the Bible while rejecting the Church that defined it is like:
โš–๏ธ Trusting a verdict while denying the court
๐Ÿ“œ Accepting a constitution while rejecting the authority that ratified it

Historically:

โœ”๏ธ The Church existed before the Bible
โœ”๏ธ The Church existed without a Bible
โŒ The Bible has never existed without the Church

Every Bible on earth today is a Catholic artifact, whether acknowledged or not.

The Bible is precious. Catholics love Sacred Scripture.
๐Ÿ“– We read it at every Mass
๐Ÿ“– We preserve it
๐Ÿ“– We defend it
๐Ÿ“– We proclaim it

But we do not separate it from the Church that Christ founded.

โŒ The Bible did not create the Church
โœ… The Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, gave birth to the Bible

And Scripture itself confirms this truth:

> โ€œThe Church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.โ€
(1 Timothy 3:15)

The Church came first.
๐Ÿ“– The Bible came from the Church.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Both stand togetherโ€”never in oppositionโ€”just as Christ intended.

โ€œThe deeper I dug into Scripture to refute Catholicism, the more Catholic I became.โ€ โ€“ Tim Staples

Tim Staples didnโ€™t set out to join the Catholic Church. He set out to disprove it.
But Scripture, history, and honest study led him somewhere he never expectedโ€”home to the Church Christ founded.

From anti-Catholic preacher to one of the most respected Catholic apologists today, his journey reminds us:
If you sincerely seek the truth, the truth will lead you.

WISDOM, THE BOOK THE WORLD TRIED TO ERASE
A powerful reflection on the Book of Wisdom โ€” the ancient Scripture every Christian once read, quietly removed in the 1500s, yet still speaking with clarity to the modern world. This piece reveals why Wisdom was lost, why it matters, and how its voice continues to rise at every Catholic altar today.
