A New Shepherd, A Jubilee of Hope

In the midst of the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, the Church rejoiced in a profound gift of grace—the Episcopal Ordination of Most Rev. Nick A. Vaquilar, D.D., as the new Bishop of the Diocese of Urdaneta.

His ordination stands as a fitting highlight of this Diamond Jubilee celebration. As the Archdiocese gives thanks for seventy-five years of God’s abiding faithfulness, it also witnesses the continuing vitality of the apostolic mission through the ordination of a new successor of the Apostles. It is a powerful reminder that the Church not only celebrates her rich history but also looks forward with renewed hope, entrusting a new shepherd with the care of God’s people.

Surrounded by bishops, priests, religious, and the lay faithful, Bishop Nick received the fullness of the Sacrament of Holy Orders and embraced the ministry entrusted to him, answering the Lord’s call to teach, sanctify, and shepherd the People of God in communion with the universal Church.

May the Lord, who has begun this good work in Bishop Nick, sustain him with wisdom, courage, and pastoral charity as he faithfully leads the Diocese of Urdaneta. As we celebrate this Jubilee of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, may his episcopal ministry become a lasting sign of hope, communion, and missionary zeal for generations to come.

Ad multos annos, Most Rev. Nick A. Vaquilar, D.D.!

DAY 1: A Journey of Listening and Communion

The opening day of the Threefold Celebration began with the Metropolitan Clergy Synodal Exchange. It was marked by fraternity, prayer, and a shared commitment to the synodal journey of the Church.

Delegates from the different Local Churches within the Ecclesiastical Province of Nueva Segovia gathered at the Immaculate Conception School of Theology for registration and fellowship before formally commencing the day’s formation activities. The afternoon featured an enriching reflection by Most Rev. Valentin Dimoc, D.D., Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc-Lagawe, on “The Role of Priests in the Synodal Church,” inviting participants to deepen their understanding of priestly ministry through listening, communion, participation, and mission.

The formation continued with a meaningful Conversation in the Spirit, during which participants prayerfully discerned together and shared the fruits of their reflections.

As evening approached, the community assembled in the Main Chapel for Solemn Vespers, presided over by Most Rev. David William V. Antonio, D.D., Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. During the celebration, Most Rev. Jacinto A. Jose, D.D., offered a heartfelt reflection, encouraging priests to remain faithful servants of communion and to love their bishop with filial devotion. The liturgy was further highlighted by the Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity of Bishop-Elect Nick A. Vaquilar, a profound expression of his fidelity to the Church as he prepared to assume the pastoral care of the Diocese of Urdaneta.

The day concluded with a fellowship dinner, strengthening the bonds of fraternity among the clergy and delegates. As we continue this Synodal Exchange, may we remain united in our journey of faith, ever attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and committed to walking together as one Church.

A Legacy of Communion

The mission of the Church is carried forward through communion.

As the Diocese of Urdaneta prepares to welcome its new shepherd, the words of Most Rev. Jacinto A. Jose, D.D., predecessor of Bishop-Elect Nick A. Vaquilar, remind us that authentic priesthood flourishes in love for one’s bishop, closeness to God’s people, and unwavering commitment to ecclesial communion.

May these reflections continue to inspire priests and faithful alike to walk together in faith and mission.

Walking Together as One Church

What does it mean to be a truly synodal Church? It begins by recognizing that no one is excluded, that authority is exercised through humble service rather than privilege, and that God Himself takes the first step in gathering His people together.

In these profound reflections, Most Rev. Valentin C. Dimoc, D.D., Bishop of the Apostolic Vicariate of Bontoc-Lagawe, reminds us that synodality is not merely a pastoral program but a way of being Church—where Christ walks among His people, the Holy Spirit harmonizes our diverse gifts, and every baptized person has a place and a mission. As priests and faithful alike, we are called to reject clericalism, accompany one another with charity, and build communities rooted in communion, participation, and mission.

May these insights continue to inspire our clergy and faithful as we journey together in faith, hope, and love.

Reflections from the talk “The Role of Priests in the Synodal Local Church,” delivered during the Metropolitan Clergy Synodal Exchange in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia.
