Memorial of St. Monica | August 27
Saint Monica is the patron saint of mothers, wives, difficult marriages,alcoholic addicts and the conversion of relatives.
Saint Monica (322β387 A.D.) is honored as the devoted mother of Saint Augustine and a model of Christian perseverance. Born in Tagaste, North Africa, she was married to Patricius, a pagan official with a difficult temperament. Despite many trials, Monica remained steadfast in faith, showing patience, humility, and charity within her household.
Her most enduring legacy is her persistent prayer and tears for the conversion of her son Augustine, who lived a worldly and restless life before embracing Christianity. For years she followed him with her intercession, believing that God would not abandon the child of so many prayers. Her fidelity bore fruit when Augustine was baptized in Milan by St. Ambrose in 387, a moment Monica lived to witness with great joy.
She died later that same year in Ostia, Italy, as she and Augustine prepared to return to Africa. Canonized for her extraordinary faith and maternal devotion, St. Monicaβs feast day is celebrated on August 27.
